What Is The Average Age A Woman Becomes Infertile

Your Changing Pregnant Body, At 37-40 Weeks Pregnant | Kaiser Permanente

The average age for menopause is 51, but most women find that they are not able to have a successful pregnancy at some point in their 40s.

Generally speaking, fertility begins to fall rapidly after the age of 37. Exactly when the decline begins, and the rate at which it progresses, varies greatly from woman to woman but fertility always naturally declines well before the menopause.

If you are in your late 30s and trying for a baby and havent had any luck in 6 months, then you must tell your GP as they can arrange some basic fertility testing such as measuring certain hormones including your FSH and AMH levels and your GP will most probably refer you for investigation by a specialist.

How To Get Pregnant If You Have Endometriosis

Endometriosis is another common reproductive condition, affecting more than one in 10 women in the United States. It occurs when tissue found in the uterus grows in other parts of the body, such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes.

Even mild endometriosis can reduce fertility, while severe endometriosis can distort a woman’s pelvic anatomy and, for example, block her fallopian tubes, according to a 2015 study in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India.

It is still possible for a woman with endometriosis to become pregnant, and, once pregnant, the pregnancy is expected to be no different to that of a woman without endometriosis. Medical treatment through drugs does not improve fertility, according to Endometriosis UK, an endometriosis-focused charity. These medications involve regulating a person’s hormones, and can slow the growth of endometrial tissue and prevent new pieces from developing, said the Mayo Clinic. But because these drugs are based on hormones , they actively stop a woman from getting pregnant.

Sickle Cell And Thalassaemia

Loss of a twin at 37 weeks

Sickle cell disease and thalassaemia are blood disorders you inherit through your family. If you are a carrier of sickle cell or thalassaemia, you can pass these conditions on to your baby.

These conditions affect haemoglobin, a part of the blood that carries oxygen around the body. People who have these conditions will need specialist care throughout their lives.

It is important to know whether your baby is at risk because babies with sickle cell disease can receive early treatment, including immunisations and antibiotics.

This, along with support from their parents, will help prevent serious illness and allow the child to live a healthier life.

Does A Man’s Weight Impact His Fertility

When doctors address fertility, women often receive much of the counseling, but experts know that male infertility accounts for about one-third of the cases of infertility. And a fathers weight plays into that.

If a woman is overweight or obese her chances for conception are down … But, it takes two to make a baby, Rajeshwari Sundaram, a senior investigator at Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland, told TODAY. While a women’s weight plays a role in infertility, obese or overweight fathers also contribute to the issue.

If both parents are obese then their odds for conception for any given cycle is 55% less than people with a normal BMI, she explained. Being a dad starts pre-conception, too.

Men’s Age And Fertility

While the effects of female age on fertility have been known for a long time, more recent studies have found that the age of the male partner also affects the chance of pregnancy and pregnancy health.

Male fertility generally starts to reduce around age 40 to 45 years when sperm quality decreases. Increasing male age reduces the overall chances of pregnancy and increases time to pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage and fetal death.

Children of older fathers also have an increased risk of mental health problems . Children of fathers aged 40 or over are 5 times more likely to develop an autism spectrum disorder than children of fathers aged 30 or less. They also have a slightly increased risk of developing schizophreniaand other mental health disorders later in life.

Try a perineal massage. Its certainly not the most comfortable thing in the world, but a perineal massage may save you from some burning and tearing down there. The idea is to gently stretch the perineum the area between your vagina and anus to minimize burning, pain, and tearing during delivery.

Make sure your hands and perineum are well lubricated for the massage. Insert 2 fingers 3-4 cm into your vagina and gently, but firmly apply pressure downward, toward your anus. Slowly pull your two fingers apart so that you are stretching downwards and outwards. When you begin to feel a tingling sensation, it means that you are stretching the skin. You can also stretch the perineum from the outside by gently pulling the skin outward toward your thighs.

Get your partner to help you with the perineal massage if you have difficulty doing it yourself.

Chances Of Getting Pregnant By Age

At birth, women will have their entire lifetime supply of eggs. As women age, the quality and quantity of those eggs begins to decrease. This, paired with the fact that human reproduction is not the most efficient process, makes timing key.
Many are surprised to learn that each month, on average, a woman only has a 15 to 20 percent chance of conception. For women in their 20s, their chances of getting pregnant within 1 year are 78 to 86 percent. For women 30 to 34, their chances of getting pregnant within 1 year is approximately 63 percent. For women ages 35 to 39, the chances of conception within 1 year declines to 52 percent. This rate continues to decline in a womans 40s, until she reaches menopause, typically between ages 48 and 55.
This is not to say that after 12 months of trying, conception magically declines, but rather that most fertile couples will have conceived, and couples who have not may likely have some form of infertility.

Dont Assume You Know When You Ovulate

    37 weeks pregnant

Youve probably heard that ovulation occurs in the middle of a womans cycletypically fourteen days before the onset of her next menses, or Day 14 of a 28-day cycle.6

While this may be true for some women, it is not the case for every woman, or even every cycle. That is, the timing of a womans fertile window can vary greatly, even among women with regular 28-day cycles. In fact, a prospective study found that less than 30% of women experienced a fertile window between days 10 and 17, as suggested by clinical guidelines.7

This means that if women trying to get pregnant time their intercourse around the assumption that they ovulate 14 days after their period, a lot of these women are not utilizing their fertile window as effectively as possible. And given that a womans cycle tends to become more irregular with increasing age, predicting the fertile window can become especially difficult for women over 35.6

    Why Cant I Get Pregnant

When youre ready to start a family and youre not getting pregnant, it can be frustrating and overwhelming. Especially if youve tried the conventional methods to maximize your chances: having frequent intercourse during your fertile window, tracking your temperature every morning and using tools like ovulation tracker apps and predictor kits.

You may start to wonder is this a medical problem or do I simply need to be more patient? Youre not alone. One in 8 couples struggles to conceive. Chantel Cross, M.D., a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist with the Johns Hopkins Fertility Center at the Johns Hopkins Health Care & Surgery Center Green Spring Station in Lutherville, Maryland, explains what factors might be affecting your ability to get pregnant and when you might consider infertility treatment.

How Long Is Too Long To Get Pregnant

Just because youve been trying to get pregnant for longer than a year doesnt mean youre infertile. Remember, even for people with average fertility, seven percent of couples wont get pregnant within a year. And if you do discover a condition impacting your fertility, it doesnt necessarily mean you need medical intervention to conceive, Mukherjee says.

When youre trying to get pregnant, the components that matter are quality eggs, regular ovulation, healthy sperm, and a healthy uterus and fallopian tubes, Mukherjee says. If theres a problem with two or more components, the chances are higher that a couple will need medical intervention to make a baby. But if theres a problem with only one of those components, the chances are good that a couple will be able to get pregnant without assistance. Itll just take more time.

For example, polycystic ovarian syndrome is a major cause of irregular periods, impacting 6 to 12 percent of women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People with PCOS often take longer to get pregnant because they tend to ovulate less often. Instead of 13 opportunities per year to conceive, you might be down to six or seven, Mukherjee says. But in the long-term, women with PCOS conceive at the same rate as women without PCOS.

The problem is, not all couples have time. If you start trying to get pregnant at 35, you cant afford to wait, Mukherjee says. But if youre in your 20s or early 30s? It might just take patience.

The Success Of Pregnancy At Different Ages

You are born with approximately two million eggs, and they are all you will have in your lifetime. Your biological clock starts ticking when you get your first period and continues until you reach menopause. By the time you receive your first period, your egg supply reduces to approximately 300,000 eggs. Between the ages of 12 and 52, you will ovulate about 500 times, and not all of those eggs will be healthy.

As you age, what remains are a select few eggs that can be considered genuinely viable for pregnancy. Your chances of getting pregnant continue to dwindle as you progress in age as follows:

Women are constantly told their biological clocks are ticking, and if you believe tabloid headlines , were often encouraged to get on with it before were 35 if we want kids.

But she is pregnant at the age of 37, suggesting she and Prince Harry didnt have too much trouble conceiving .

So are women subject to scaremongering around fertility, or did the Duke and Duchess of Sussex just get lucky?

Katherine OBrien, head of policy research at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service , tells women not to panic about conception after the age of 35.

We hear constant warnings that a womans fertility falls of a cliff once she reaches her 35th birthday, but this is simply not true, she tells HuffPost UK. The best evidence suggests that, if having sex twice a week, 82 per cent of women aged 35-39 will conceive within one year of trying. While women in their late thirties might have to try harder to conceive, they stand a high chance of falling pregnant relatively swiftly.

Professor Geeta Nargund, founder of specialist fertility clinic Create Fertility, says women wanting children do need to be aware of the impacts of ageing, but echoes that this shouldnt cause panic.

If women have not conceived after trying regularly for 12 months, they should see their GP, she adds.

Prof. Nargund adds that couples can improve their chances of conceiving by addressing their lifestyles and medical history, then seeking advice.
