Do Antibiotics Affect Birth Control
In short, some antibiotics affect hormonal birth control, and some dont. There are lots of different kinds of antibiotics, and like all prescription drugs, they have to pass rigorous tests and trials. Figuring out how common drugs interact with each other is an important part of ongoing drug safety assessment, so we have good evidence to show which medications work well or poorly with each other.
Clinical trials on most common antibiotics have shown that the risk of getting pregnant while taking hormonal contraceptives and antibiotics is no different than the risk of getting pregnant while using the hormonal contraceptive without antibiotics.
A large epidemiological U.S. study involving more than 43,000 women concluded that there is no connection between antibiotic use and a decrease in the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Additionally, a systematic review in 2016 based on 29 studies showed no difference in the occurrence of suppressed ovulation and breakthrough bleeding while taking non-rifamycin antibiotics and hormonal contraceptives.
Here are some of the types of antibiotics which do not seem to affect hormonal contraceptives:
- Ampicillin
Antibiotics For Prevention With Iuds
An intrauterine device is a small device placed in the womb for long-term birth control. Many people worry about the woman getting pelvic inflammatory disease with an IUD. This infection can lead to problems in getting pregnant. If PID occurs, it is often within the first few weeks. Antibiotics are sometimes used before inserting an IUD to prevent an infection. This review looked at how well these preventive drugs reduced problems. Such problems include PID, extra health care visits, and stopping IUD use in three months.
In February 2012, we did a computer search for trials that compared an antibiotic to a placebo . We contacted researchers to get more information. We also wrote to researchers to find other trials.
Women who took antibiotics to prevent infection did not get PID as often as those who had the placebo or no treatment. However, the numbers with PID were low for all groups, so the treatment did not have a major effect. Women who use the drugs for prevention had fewer extra visits for health care. The small difference may not be enough to provide all women with the drugs. Using antibiotics to prevent infection did not change how many women had an IUD removed in three months.
To assess the effectiveness of prophylactic antibiotic administration before IUD insertion in reducing IUD-related complications and discontinuations within three months of insertion.

Medications That Interfere With The Pill
Some medications can make the pill less effective. Medications include certain antibiotics, such as rifampicin, and anti-fungal drugs, such as griseofulvin.
A person should use backup contraception while taking these medications and for 48 hours after finishing the course.
Other more long-term medications and supplements may also affect how well birth control pills work. These can include:
- epilepsy drugs, such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine
- anti-viral medications used to treat HIV
- St. Johns Wort, which is a herbal remedy
Birth control pills are very effective if a person takes them correctly and does not miss any pill days. The following tips can help prevent unintended pregnancies while taking the pill:
- reading the packaging and following the instructions carefully
- taking the pill at the same time every day
- using an app that tracks periods and provides pills reminders, such as one of the apps from our review article
- always getting a new pill pack at least 1 week before the last pill pack is due to run out
- always taking missed pills as soon as possible
- using a backup method of contraception, such as a condom, if a person misses taking two or more pills in a row
If a person is concerned about not being able to take their pills consistently, they should speak to their doctor or gynecologist about other birth control methods. There are several options available that do not require taking a pill daily, such as an intrauterine device, or IUD.
Is It Actually Possible
Yes, you can get pregnant while using an IUD but its rare.
IUDs are more than 99 percent effective. This means that less than 1 out of every 100 people who have an IUD will become pregnant.
All IUDs hormonal, non-hormonal, or copper have a similar failure rate.

How An Iud Prevents Pregnancy
There are two types of IUDs one that contains copper and one that produces progestin, which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Both create a hostile environment for sperm to prevent it from fertilizing an egg.
The copper IUD releases copper ions that inhibit sperm. Whereas the progestin from the other IUD causes changes that also decrease pregnancy risk. Specifically, your uterine lining thins and cervical mucus thickens, essentially blocking the sperm’s path to an egg.
The Science Behind Hormonal Birth Control
Hormonal birth controls contain some combination of the hormones estrogen and progestin. Depending on which kind of birth control you use, these hormones work in your body to do at least one of the following:

Prevent ovulation. Each cycle, the ovary releases a mature egg. This release is called ovulation. The days around your ovulation are the only time during each menstrual cycle that you can get pregnant. If you don’t ovulate at all, you can’t get pregnant.

Keep sperm from making it to the uterus. Birth control can do this by causing your cervical mucus—you’ve probably heard this referred to as “vaginal discharge”— to get thicker. Thicker cervical mucus makes it incredibly hard for sperm to swim to an egg.

Make implantation unlikely. Hormonal birth control can make changes to your uterus lining that decrease the chances of a fertilized egg being implanted. Even if a sperm somehow makes it to an egg to fertilize it, you only get pregnant if it successfully implants in your uterine lining. No implantation, no pregnancy.
Rifampin can keep your birth control from doing its job by causing your liver to break down estrogen faster than it usually would. When estrogen gets broken down too quickly, it can’t drive the changes in your body that normally keep you from getting pregnant.
Note: Copper IUDs don’t use hormones to prevent pregnancy, so they won’t be affected by any medicine that may change your hormone levels.

If you become pregnant while you are using an IUD, it is important that you see a doctor or nurse as soon as possible and have the IUD removed. The doctor or nurse will also need to rule out a pregnancy in your fallopian tubes .
If the IUD is removed, you can choose to continue or terminate the pregnancy . If the IUD is not removed and you continue with the pregnancy, there is a higher risk of losing the pregnancy or delivering the baby early.
Timing Of Removal If You Wish To Avoid Pregnancy
Scotchie says you can remove an IUD at any time. But if you want to prevent pregnancy right away, you need to use another form of contraception such as condoms or birth control pills until you want to become pregnant.

How Can I Prevent Pregnancy If I’m Taking Antibiotics
It is not likely that you will get pregnant while taking antibiotics on the pill. But it doesn’t hurt to be extra cautious. To be safe, use a backup method of birth control while you take your antibiotics and for up to a week after you finish. Backup birth control options you can try include condoms, sponges and spermicide. You can buy these forms of birth control without a prescription at many grocery stores and drugstores.
Do not stop taking your birth control pills even if you are temporarily using a backup method of birth control. Take your pills exactly as you always have to avoid messing up your cycle.
What If I Am Using The Copper Iud And I Want To Become Pregnant
The copper IUD can be removed at any time by a doctor or a nurse. Your fertility will quickly return to what is normal for you.

Iuds Do Not Give Protection From Stis
Neither type of IUD gives protection from sexually transmissible infections . Its important to practise safer sex, as well as to prevent an unintended pregnancy. The best way to lessen the risk of STIs is to use barrier methods such as condoms for oral, vaginal and anal sex with all new sexual partners. Condoms can be used with IUDs.
Natural Lubricants May Damage Condoms
Using a natural, oil-based lubricant during sex may make barrier birth control methods like condoms less reliable.
When using during sex, certain natural oils, like coconut oil or almond oil, can weaken latex condoms, making them less effective. These oils can sometimes even cause condoms to break.
To ensure that your latex condom stays in working order, you may want to try to use a water-based lubricant instead of an oil-based one.
If you want to use oil-based lubricants, you can try using non-latex condoms, such as condoms made from lambskin, as they can protect against pregnancy even if used with natural, fat-based lubricants.

Are There Any Side Effects From Using The Hormonal Iud
Possible side effects include:
- When it is first inserted some users have period-type cramping that usually settles after a few days.
- Sometimes the IUD can come out. This is more common in the first 3 months of it being inserted.
- Your period will change. Spotting or frequent bleeding is common in the first 3 to 6 months. By 6 months around 95% of users will have a light regular period or no bleeding at all .
- You may experience tender breasts, headaches, skin changes and mood changes. These side effects nearly always settle with time. The hormonal IUD has not been shown to cause weight gain.
