What Should I Expect After I Get My Implant Removed
Overall, you should feel completely normal after getting your implant taken out. Your arm may feel tender or swollen around where the implant was for a few days. It may look bruised for a week or two. Your doctor or nurse will tell you how to wash and take care of your skin for a couple of days after removal. Any side effects that you may have had while on the implant will eventually go away after the implant is out. Unless you start another hormonal birth control method after removing the implant, your period will go back to how it was before you got Nexplanon. You can keep track of your period after removal using our app.

How Long After Nexplanon Removal To Get Pregnant
Nexplanon | |
Nexplanon acts as a contraceptive | 3 years |
Nexplanon needs to be replaced | 3-4 years |
Your fertility should return within a month after the procedure. It may take a few months for your cycle to return to normal following the removal of a Nexplanon. Its important to remember that just because your fertility has returned doesnt mean you can get pregnant immediately. For someone who has spent years avoiding pregnancy, this may be a strange experience. You might believe that if you hadnt used birth control, you would have conceived right away, but this isnt entirely true.
After the removal of Nexplanon, the majority of women become pregnant within six months. However, it can take longer in some situations. Nexplanon is only effective for 3 years, after which it must be removed by a nurse or doctor. If you want to get pregnant or stop using your implant, you can have it removed at any time before then. If youve had the implant for three years and are still unable to conceive, its time to replace it . When the old implant is removed, you will get a new one.
After your implant has been removed, you should feel absolutely fine. For a few days, the area where the implant was can feel tender or swollen. For a week or two, it can appear bruised. For a few days after removal, your doctor or nurse will instruct you on how to wash and care for your skin.

How Soon After Nexplanon Removal Will I Be Able To Get Pregnant
For women who are not yet planning on becoming pregnant, this means that they are wise to line up an alternative method of birth control before having Nexplanon removed. Should you be interested in another long-term birth control option, you can discuss this with your provider at the same time you are having Nexplanon removed.
How Soon Can I Get Pregnant After Nexplanon Is Removed
Immediately! The body becomes fertile as soon as Nexplanon is removed. With this said, however, keep in mind that you’ve had a long-acting form of birth control in your body . It can take up to 3 months for ovulation to return.
Nexplanon has also been working to thin the lining of your uterus, potentially making it more difficult for an embryo to implant immediately after Nexplanon is removed. It thickens back up quickly for most women , but it is best to give it a couple of cycles to recuperate. Don’t be discouraged if pregnancy does not happen immediately, and keep in mind that pregnancy immediately of removal could carry a slightly increased risk for miscarriage.
If you have been using Nexplanon or other forms of birth control for many years, also keep in mind that age affects egg quality and chance of pregnancy. Every year after about age 25 your fertility slowly declines, making it ever so slightly more difficult to get pregnant as you age. Be patient with your body. Give it a full year of trying before considering infertility.

Barrier Methods And Natural Methods
If you were using a barrier method, there is good news. These methods do not interfere with fertility. Barrier methods include:
Barrier methods block sperm from reaching your egg. These methods do not stop ovulation. Whether you are using them or not, your monthly cycle does not change.
As an added bonus, condoms also protect you from sexually transmitted infections . Left untreated, some STIs can lead to infertility.
Some people use natural family planning methods. If this is you, you may be able to get pregnant faster. Many of these methods have you keep track of your most fertile days. So now, just do the reverse. Instead of avoiding sex around those days, go try to make a baby.
Myth: Pregnant While Using An Implant
Some women who seek family planning believe that implants will interrupt an existing pregnancy.
Fact: A fetus will not be harmed by the insertion of an implant
Implants work primarily by thickening cervical mucus, which blocks sperm from meeting an egg, and by disrupting the menstrual cycle and preventing ovulation. Implants do not interrupt pregnancy. Good evidence shows that implants will not affect the pregnancy or harm the fetus if a woman is already pregnant when implants are inserted or becomes pregnant while using implants.

It might not be possible to have an implant fitted or replaced at the moment.
You normally have a contraceptive implant for 3 years, but it can be left in and will continue to work for up to 4 years.
The risk of getting pregnant during the 4th year is very low. If youre worried about getting pregnant, you could use condoms or the progestogen-only pill as well.
Does Nexplanon Lose Effectiveness Over Time
Nexplanon prevents pregnancy by continually releasing a low dose of progestin over a three-year period. The amount of progestin released slowly decreases over time. By the end of the third year, the dose released is too small to prevent pregnancy, which is why the implant must be removed at that time.

Does The Hormonal Iud Affect Future Fertility
The short answer: The hormonal IUD doesn’t affect future fertility.
The long answer: The Intrauterine Device is a small contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus. This hormonal IUD works more like other hormonal contraceptives . Hormonal IUDs use the synthetic hormone progestin to thicken the cervical mucus, stopping sperm from travelling to the egg and often preventing ovulation.
Like other hormonal methods, most women show a quick return to fertility after using Mirena, and don’t experience any long term fertility problems associated with uncomplicated use of the IUD.
Many women voice concerns about infection and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease . In the case of new IUDs, the risk of PID and infection is very low infection can occur in the weeks following insertion but is usually mild and can be treated with oral antibiotics.
Questions And Answers About Implants
1. Do users of implants require follow-up visits?
No. Routine periodic visits are not necessary for implant users. Annual visits may be helpful for other preventive care, but they are not necessary or required. Of course, women are welcome to return at any time with questions or to have implants removed.
2. Can implants be left in a woman’s arm?
Leaving the implants in place beyond their effective lifespan is generally not recommended if the woman continues to be at risk of pregnancy. The implants themselves are not dangerous, but as the hormone levels in the implants drop, they become less and less effective. After they lose effectiveness, they may still release a small dose of hormone for several more years, which serves no purpose.
If a woman wants to continue using implants, she may have a new implant inserted in the other arm even if the first implant is not removed at that time, for example, if removal services are not immediately available.
3. Do implants cause cancer?
No. Studies have not shown increased risk of any cancer with use of implants.
4. How long does it take to become pregnant after the implants are removed?
Women who stop using implants can become pregnant as quickly as women who stop nonhormonal methods. Implants do not delay the return of a woman’s fertility after they are removed. The bleeding pattern a woman had before she used implants generally returns after they are removed.
6. Can implants come out of a womans arm?

If You’re Under 16 Years Old
Contraception services are free and confidential, including for people under the age of 16.
If you’re under 16 and want contraception, the doctor, nurse or pharmacist won’t tell your parents as long as they believe you fully understand the information you’re given, and your decisions.
Doctors and nurses work under strict guidelines when dealing with people under 16. They’ll encourage you to consider telling your parents, but they won’t make you.
The only time a professional might want to tell someone else is if they believe you’re at risk of harm, such as abuse. The risk would need to be serious, and they would usually discuss this with you first.

How Long Will It Take To Get Pregnant
Most hormonal birth control methods stop you from ovulating, or releasing an egg. If you do not release an egg, there is nothing for sperm to fertilize. This is why you do not get pregnant.
When you stop using hormonal birth control, you will start ovulating again. When you are ovulating, you are fertile. But a return of fertility does not automatically mean you will get pregnant.
Exact Answer: 3 To 18 Months

Ttc After Nexplanon Removal
I had my Nexplanon removed yesterday. I’ve been taking the pill since Monday to cover myself but to be honest, we’re thinking of TTC anyway so I might just ditch the pill and go cold turkey. Do you have to wait until your first AF after you have your implant removed until you’re considered “fertile” or are you good to go as soon as it’s out? I’m starting to worry about my fertility returning as I’ve seen so many women say it’s taken them months, even years to get pregnant again after the implant. If anyone has any advice or experience they could share, that would be great!!
Hi. I had mine removed on 7th Nov as we are ttc. I had regular bleeding in my last year of implant so based on that I expected AF on 21/11 but only had some spotting. Even thought I might have been pregnant but nope. Now on day 40 based on Ovia & think I will soon ovulate based on OPKs so at least I know things are working now. I think everyone is different but that’s my story.I would suggest OPKs just to learn what your body is doing.Good luck, here if you have questions.
Thanks for your reply I’m getting really anxious that I’ve mucked up my fertility. I was on Nexplanon for about 18 months and had regular spotting for most of the time. Do you think it’s best to stop taking the pill so I can try and get my body back to normal and try and chart my ovulation? I just have this feeling that it’s not going to be an easy ride for me
