How To Count Your Pregnancy

How Is Pregnancy Calculated

HOW TO COUNT YOUR PREGNANCY!

Calculating the day your baby begins to develop and keeping track of your pregnancy dates can be a challenge. The development of pregnancy is counted from the first day of the womans last normal menstrual period , even though the development of the fetus does not begin until conception, which is about two weeks later.

Pregnancy is calculated from this day because each time a woman has a period, her body is preparing for pregnancy. Counting from the LMP, most women are pregnant an average of 280 days. Calculating from the LMP also gives a standard of measurement for health care providers to follow since it is extremely difficult to know exactly when conception occurred.

Acog Definition Of Pregnancy

  • Early-term: 37 weeks through 38 weeks and six days
  • Full-term: 39 weeks through 40 weeks and six days
  • Late-term: 41 weeks through 41 weeks and six days
  • Post-term: any pregnancy that goes beyond 42 weeks

Sometimes, when talking about twins or triplets, you will hear people say things like, Twins are full-term at 37 weeks. But this isnt truly accurate. All pregnanciesincluding twins, triplets, or morearent truly full-term until they reach 39 weeks.

While you might be at greater risk of earlier labor with twins, that doesn’t affect how the timing of labor would be classified.

Calculating From Your Period

  • 1Figure out the day of your last period. Most doctors will calculate how many weeks you’re pregnant from your last monthly period. To begin your calculations, figure out when you last had your period. You’ll start with the first day of your last period.XResearch source
  • This calculation only works if you are fairly regular, meaning your period comes mostly on a set schedule, such as every 29 days.
  • This method may not work for all women, as its accuracy depends upon how closely you keep track of your menstrual cycle.
  • 2Count the weeks. Once you’ve figured out your first day, you can count the weeks to figure out how far along you are. When you’re counting weeks, you don’t start with week one. Rather, once you’ve completed week one, you are considered to be one week pregnant. Therefore, if you’re in your fourteenth week but haven’t completed it yet, you’re only thirteen weeks pregnant.XResearch source
  • 3Figure out your due date. Your due date will be forty weeks into your pregnancy. Count forty weeks from the last day of your period to figure out your due date. Keep in mind, though, that due dates are not an exact science. Your baby will come when it wants to!XResearch sourceAdvertisement

How To Count Your Pregnancy Weeks

You might be surprised that when you find out youre pregnant, you are already four weeks pregnant. When counting weeks of pregnancy, if you squint, it all falls apart.

Heres the thing about baby making: we dont actually know when a baby is conceived. In order to compare outcomes and validate data, health professionals need a standard, so pregnancy is dated to the first day of your last period aka LMP .

The basic formula is LMP + 280 days, called Naegeles rule after the doc who came up with it in the 1800s.

Of course, its gotten a little more complicated. Some of us misremember the first day of our last period, and due dates are really important for understanding pregnancy outcomes. In 2014, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists to include an early ultrasound measurement of the baby.

Based on your LMP along with an early ultrasound measurement, your midwife or OB will give you an estimated due date, or EDD.

Some fancy new pregnancy tests even estimate your weeks of pregnancy at home. Of course, check with your doctor to confirm those results.

How accurate is your due date? Since this estimate is used as a benchmark, its not as helpful for each individual pregnancy. A due date should more likely be called a due week, or even month. Only four percent of babies come on their exact due date, but 90% are born within the week before or after, according to this British study.

How Do You Calculate Pregnancy Weeks After Ivf

    Pregnancy Calendar Week Calculator

Calculating weeks of pregnancy and the due date is more precise during an IVF than it is during natural conception. This is because the exact date of embryo transfer is known. The insemination or egg retrieval procedure is scheduled before ovulation in IVF, thus making it more accurate.

The IVF due date is calculated by adding 38 weeks to the day the eggs were inseminated.

An alternative calculation is by adding 38 weeks to the date of transfer and subtract the age of embryos from this date. For instance, if it is a three-day embryo transfer, subtract three days, and if it is a four-day embryo transfer, subtract four days .

It, therefore, gives reliable estimated due dates. Also, with progressing pregnancy, the estimated due date could be more accurate based on ultrasound scans.

    How To Understand Gestational Age

LMP refers to the first day of your last menstrual period. Health care providers measure pregnancies in weeks starting from the first day of the LMP. If your period is regular and lasts 28 days, and if ovulation generally happens on day 14 of your cycle, then conception probably took place about two weeks after the LMP. For gestational age counting, these two weeks are added to a pregnancy as a simpler method than trying to track from ovulation or fertilization.

Nevertheless, this estimation is not always accurate. It doesn’t take into account factors like changes in the menstrual cycle, variations in ovulation, and imperfect recall by patients.

A due date calendar or calculator can help pregnant people determine their babys due date.

To calculate your due date, add 280 days to the first day of your LMP .

Different calculators can help determine your due date based on ovulation, date of conception, and ultrasound data. Specific calculators can predict the due dates of people who are using assisted reproductive technologies and embryo transfer.

The conception date refers to when a baby was conceived. Since sperm can live inside the vaginal canal for three to five days, conception can take place up to five days after sexual intercourse. Fertilization depends on ovulation and can occur within 12-24 hours from the release of the egg .

What Are The Three Trimesters In Pregnancy

The pregnancy period is divided into three, three-month segments known as trimesters. The division helps understand the changes in the body.

First trimester: It lasts from week one to week 13, when you experience nausea and tiredness.

Second trimester: It lasts from week 14 to week 28. You will feel much better in this period, and your pregnancy bump will be seen. Early pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, headache, dizziness, fatigue, etc., slowly disappear.

Third trimester: It lasts from week 29 until you deliver the baby. You will require extra energy to help your baby grow and beat the tiredness .

What If You Dont Know The Date Of Your Last Period Or Have Irregular Periods

How to Count Weeks of Pregnant

The due date calculation works best if the menstrual cycle is regular and the periods take place every 28 days. Just in case, one has an irregular menstrual cycle, then she might be unable to figure out her date of LMP. Or if her cycle differs in length, calculating from the first day of her LMP might not give us a date that we can trust. However, it can be really tough figuring out the date of the last period if the prospective mother has irregular period.

But the dating scan that is the first ultrasound of the prospective mother accurately tells us about the due date of the baby. The sonographer will carry out Crown Rump Length which will give an estimate idea of how far along is the pregnancy.

What Exactly Is The Date Of Conception

The date of conception is the day that the egg and sperm meet.

Women who track their ovulation may know their exact date of conception. But for many women, date of conception can be tricky to pinpoint.

Sperm can live in a womans body for up to five days, and the ovum can live for up to 24 hours after being released. In other words, you have a six-day window where you could potentially get pregnant each month.

Why Pregnancy Is Counted From The Last Menstrual Period

How Do You Count Pregnancy Weeks From The Start ...

Pregnancy is counted from a women’s last menstrual period because the start of a period is easily observable and usually known to a woman whereas the date of conception is much less likely to be known.

Historically, the first day of the last menstrual period became the date from which pregnancy is counted even though conception occurs about two weeks later.

The LMP formula is good for working out an initial age of pregnancy but ultrasound is more accurate. The age of pregnancy may be revised following your ultrasound scan.

Why Your Due Date Is Important

Your due date is likely one of the first bits of information youll seek out after you find out youre pregnant. Friends and family will want to know so they can look forward to greeting your new baby .

Doctors, midwives, and nurses will want to know so they can track important health milestones and make decisions about interventions and prenatal testing.

Your due date is less of a deadline and more like a time marker. Your due date indicates the 40th week since your last menstrual period or the 38th week from ovulation.

Once your due date is calculated, you’re likely to give birth within a four-week period that surrounds your due date. In other words, sometime during the two weeks prior to and two weeks after your assigned due date, you’ll likely meet your baby.

Around 70 out of every 100 women will have their baby within 10 days of their due date. Assuming there are no complications, others will deliver either a little earlier or a little later than that.

The due date is valuable for many reasons, including the preparation of your home and family for the new arrival. There are also several other reasons it’s helpful to know your due date.

How To Calculate How Many Weeks You Are

  • Start by counting the recurring day of your last menstrual period
  • Stop counting recurring days when you reach the present time.
  • The number of recurring days you count is the number of weeks you are now.
  • Example:count one week to the nextuntil you reach the present date.

    LMP = December 2, 2021

    1st Wed = December 9, 2021 = 1 Week2nd Wed = December 16, 2021 = 2 Weeks9th Wed = February 3, 2022 = 9 WeeksYou are 9 Weeks and 1 Day pregnant

Another method to calculate how many weeks pregnant you are is to:

  • Count the days from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period until you reach today’s date.
  • Now divide the counted days by 7.
  • The answer will be how many weeks you are now.
  • How Many Weeks Am I Formula:LMP = Last Menstrual PeriodHow Far Along Am I Formula:LMP = Last Menstrual Period*LMP date may be adjusted if unknown or following ultrasound.

Each of these methods will give you the gestational age of your pregnancy.

How Is Pregnancy Due Date Calculated

How to calculate Pregnancy Months into Weeks| Souh African Youuber

Your pregnancy due date is calculated by adding 40 weeks to the first day of your last menstrual period . This is done with an assumption that you have a 28-day menstrual cycle. The time between your menstrual period and ovulation is calculated as the first two weeks of pregnancy, as ovulation takes place two weeks after the first day of LMP. If you deliver the baby on the estimated due date, she is 38 weeks old after conception and not 40 .

If you miss your first period, you are likely to be four weeks pregnant .

    What Is Gestational Age

Gestational age is the number of days or weeks that have passed since the first day of a pregnant person’s last menstrual period. Knowing your gestational age while pregnant allows you and your health care provider to estimate your babys due date.

Gestational age describes where you are in your pregnancy. Its measured from the first day of your last menstrual period to the current date, typically in weeks. Usually, pregnancies last anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks babies born before the 37-week marker are considered premature.

How Do I Calculate My Due Date

Still havent checked in with the doc about your estimated due date? Its calculated counting from the first day of your last menstrual period instead of the day you conceived. So try to remember the first day of your LMP and add 40 weeks to that.

If you like math, you can also calculate your due date with the following formula:

    • Subtract three months from the first day of your LMP
    • Add seven days
    • Add one year

For example, if the first day of your LMP was 6/2/2020, subtract three months to get 3/2/2020. Add seven days and you’ll get 3/9/2020. Finally, add one year to find your estimated due date of 3/9/2021.

What Is Gestational Age Can It Be Different Than What The Calculator Shows

Gestational age is the term used to describe how far along the pregnancy is and how long baby has been gestating .

If you get an ultrasound you may notice a GA on the image with a number of weeks and days. This figure is based on how the baby is measuring, not on your LMP, which the due date calculator uses.

Its normal for these dates to not match up perfectly. If there are significant differences in the dates, your doctor may want to dig deeper to determine conception date. As a result, your midwife or doctor may change your due date based on the ultrasound gestational age.

Early ultrasounds are very accurate when dating a pregnancy and can be helpful if you dont know your LMP or your periods are irregular.

Note that you dont have to have an early ultrasound, especially if you are fairly certain of your cycle length and conception window. This study shows that early dating ultrasounds dont change the incidence of induction.

Your Body At Week 4 Of Pregnancy

Calculate Pregnancy Due Date If Period Irregular ...

You may not notice any differences in your body or feel any symptoms at 4 weeks pregnant. For most women, particularly those with a regular menstrual cycle, the first sign of pregnancy will be a missed period. The best way to confirm conception is with a pregnancy test, either at home or at a clinic.

Some women may notice very slight bleeding, or spotting, around the time that implantation occurs. Although you wont be able to tell, inside your womb the amniotic sac and placenta will be developing and will later provide oxygen and nourishment to your embryo.

Once you know that youre pregnant, you can start the clock! Your pregnancy is considered to have begun from the start of your last period and a normal term is 40 weeks from this point. Note that your healthcare provider may modify this start date after completing an ultrasound scan later on in your pregnancy this provides a more reliable and consistent way to track your dates.

    Lmp Versus Early Ultrasound

The accuracy of using your LMP to date your pregnancy depends on having regular cycles and assumes you ovulated on day 14 of your cycle and conceived right away – none of which may be true. Because few women know the exact day they ovulated or conceived, an ultrasound done in the first trimester of pregnancy has been shown to the be the most accurate way to date a pregnancy.

If an ultrasound date in the first trimester differs from your LMP date by seven days or more, we would go with the ultrasound. If the ultrasound date is within seven days of your LMP date, we would stick with your LMP date. Ultrasounds done later in the pregnancy are less accurate for dating, so if your due date is set in the first trimester, it shouldn’t be changed.

However, if you did not get a first trimester ultrasound for dating and an ultrasound done to look at the baby’s anatomy differs from your LMP date by 10 to 14 days, we would change your date to the ultrasound estimate.
