Why Should The Dental Implant Procedure Wait Until After Pregnancy

The concern with getting a dental implant while pregnant is the anesthesia. Local anesthesia that is used to numb the mouth in preparation for a cavity filling or root canal is safe during pregnancy. But IV or oral sedation is not necessarily safe. While there has been no research to show that there are any harmful effects, ultimately it is better to be safe and avoid the procedure if it is not urgent.

Another factor is that X-Ray images are usually needed to prepare for an implant procedure. X-Rays are used to evaluate bone density to ensure that there is sufficient jaw bone to support an implant. While it may be safe to have X-Ray images taken during pregnancy with the appropriate protective covering, it is usually best to avoid it if not absolutely necessary.

How Effective Is Nexplanon

The Nexplanon implant is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when implanted correctly, which makes it one of the best contraceptive options for people who opt to use hormonal birth control. Its also a good choice for anyone who is sensitive to estrogen, since Nexplanon relies on progestin to prevent pregnancy.

Because it is a get it and go type of birth control, the likelihood of user errorsuch as forgetting to take your birth control pill every day, change your patch weekly, or swap out your NuvaRing every three weeksis eliminated.

Questions And Answers About Implants

Conceiving n Fertility Getting Pregnant after Nexplanon Implant Birth Control Removal x Conception

1. Do users of implants require follow-up visits?

No. Routine periodic visits are not necessary for implant users. Annual visits may be helpful for other preventive care, but they are not necessary or required. Of course, women are welcome to return at any time with questions or to have implants removed.

2. Can implants be left in a woman’s arm?

Leaving the implants in place beyond their effective lifespan is generally not recommended if the woman continues to be at risk of pregnancy. The implants themselves are not dangerous, but as the hormone levels in the implants drop, they become less and less effective. After they lose effectiveness, they may still release a small dose of hormone for several more years, which serves no purpose.

If a woman wants to continue using implants, she may have a new implant inserted in the other arm even if the first implant is not removed at that time, for example, if removal services are not immediately available.

3. Do implants cause cancer?

No. Studies have not shown increased risk of any cancer with use of implants.

4. How long does it take to become pregnant after the implants are removed?

Women who stop using implants can become pregnant as quickly as women who stop nonhormonal methods. Implants do not delay the return of a woman’s fertility after they are removed. The bleeding pattern a woman had before she used implants generally returns after they are removed.

6. Can implants come out of a womans arm?

Risks Of Taking Birth Control While Pregnant

If you were taking birth control to prevent pregnancy but find out weeks later that youre indeed pregnant, its natural to wonder what effect your birth control may have on a developing fetus. The good news is that birth control has been shown to be safe in early pregnancy.

Of course, no guarantee can be made that the medication hasnt affected the babys development, so be sure to see your doctor as soon as you suspect or find out that youre pregnant. If you test positive, you should stop taking your birth control pill.

Becoming pregnant while on birth control does increase your risk of ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized embryo attaches outside the uterus, often in the fallopian tube. This is a very serious, life-threatening problem and should be cared for immediately.

Myth: Getting An Implant Is Painful And Could Cause Infection

Some women who seek family planning believe that the insertion of implants requires surgery or that insertion is painful and causes infection. They may also have misconceptions about the removal of implants.

Fact: No stitches, no noticeable scar, and it can be removed at any time

Health professionals with specific training perform a minor surgical procedure to insert implants. The provider gives the patient an injection of local anesthetic under the skin of her arm to prevent pain while the implants are inserted. This injection may sting. The woman remains fully awake during the procedure. Insertion takes an average of 4 to 5 minutes for Norplant, 2.5 minutes for Jadelle, and 1.5 minutes for Implanon. Insertion can take more or less time, depending on the skill of the provider.

The incision is small and stitches are not required. In most cases, insertion does not leave a noticeable scar. Once inserted, the outline of the implants underneath the skin can be felt and sometimes seen. The woman may have bruising and feel pain or soreness for a few days afterward.

Infection at the insertion site can occur, but is uncommon. When infection occurs, it is usually within the first two months after insertion. In rare cases, implants may start to come out of the skin. When this occurs, it is usually due to improper insertion or infection.

What Happens During The Implantation

What happens:

  • To avoid infection, proper sterile methods must be used during the insertion of the implant, such as the use of hand hygiene, sterile gloves, and correct skin disinfection.
  • A trained doctor or nurse will give local anesthetics, which will numb the part of your arm where the implant will be inserted.
  • The doctor may mark the insertion point at 8-10 cm above the elbow of your inner side of the upper arm and another point around 4 cm above as a direction guide.
  • It only takes a few minutes to put in, feels similar to having an injection, and you do not need any stitches.
  • After implantation, you may get bruising at the implant site, which is normal.

Implanon: 600 Pregnancies Despite Contraceptive Implant

What are my chances of getting pregnant if I have an implantable form of contraception?

Nearly 600 women have become pregnant despite using a popular contraceptive implant, a health watchdog has said.

There have also been more than 1,600 reports of adverse reactions to the Implanon device, which is designed to prevent pregnancy for three years.

The NHS has been forced to pay compensation to several women because of the failures, Channel 4 News reported.

1.4 million women have used Implanon, according to the Department of Health.

The implant maker, MSD, said no contraceptive was 100% effective.

It added that unwanted pregnancies may occur if the implant was not correctly inserted, and said it had a failure rate of less than 1% if inserted correctly.

What To Expect At The Doctors Office

Your doctor or another health care professional will inject medicine to numb your skin on your upper arm, where youâll get the implant. That may sting a bit.

Then theyâll use a tool that pushes the rod in through a needle. That wonât hurt. It feels like a little bit of tugging. The process may take less than a minute.

Afterward, you should be able to feel the implant under your skin but not see it.

Myth: Who Can Use The Method

Some women who seek family planning believe that implants should not be used by women who are young or who have not had children.

Fact: Nearly all women can use implants safely and effectively

Implants are suitable for women of any age, regardless of whether they have had children or not. Implants do not make women infertilefertility returns as soon as implants are removed. Breastfeeding women can use implants if at least six weeks have passed since they have given birth.

Implants may not be suitable for women who require a family planning method without hormones. For example, women who have or have had breast cancer and women with active, serious liver disease should choose an alternative method.

Can The Implant Run Out Before 3 Years

Nexplanon works for 3 years before it needs to be replaced. You can use this method until you reach the menopause, when a womans monthly periods stop naturally. The implant can be removed at any time by a specially trained doctor or nurse. It only takes a few minutes to remove, and a local anaesthetic will be used.

What Is Implantation Bleeding

Can You Get Pregnant on The Implant (Nexplanon ...

Implantation bleeding is light bleeding or spotting that occurs between seven and 14 days after fertilization.

After ovulation and at the moment an egg is successfully fertilized by a sperm in a fallopian tube, the embryo starts dividing and growing. At this time, the inner lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, starts to change. It’s already been thickening throughout the menstrual cycle, but itll need to grow and mature even more to protect and nourish an embryo.

Around five to six days after fertilization, the quickly growing embryo has moved down the fallopian tube and into the uterus. Its starting to need more nutrients, and the endometrium has filled in enough to support it.

Next, the embryo attaches itself to the endometrium, where it becomes reliant on a mothers body for the first time for nutrients and oxygen. When the embryo implants, it can disrupt tiny blood vessels in the spot it burrows into. This wont cause any problems but some women will experience light bleeding, from pinkish or red to brown discharge.

Will Other Medicines Affect The Implant

Some medicines can make the implant less effective, such as:

  • medicines for HIV, epilepsy and tuberculosis
  • complementary remedies, such as St Johns Wort
  • some antibiotics, such as rifabutin or rifampicin

If youre taking any of these medicines, youll need additional contraception , or you may wish to use a different method of contraception that isnt affected by your medicine.

Always tell your doctor that youre using an implant if youre prescribed any medicine. You can also ask them whether the medicine youre taking will affect the implant.
