In and of themselves, PEGs arent necessarily harmful to human health. The problem, however, is that PEGs go through a process called ethoxylation, which involves two toxic ingredients: ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Both of these chemicals are carcinogenic, and ethylene oxide is also an irritant. Unfortunately, PEGs have frequently been found to be contaminated with these two toxins.

PEGs are often listed on ingredient lists as PEG followed by a number, such as PEG-8.

Steareths (which are often listed as Steareth-## like Steareth-100 come with the same potential issue as PEGs.

Is It Bad To Have Aluminum In Your Deodorant

Science Shows Why You Need a Safe Deodorant for Pregnancy

Who would have thought that something like smelly armpits would have sparked a huge debate among people all over the world? But it has. Many people never want to use deodorants with aluminum ever again, and we donât necessarily blame them as there can be possible side effect from using a deodorant with aluminum in it. The aluminum from your deodorant may build up in your body over time and could possibly cause a reaction in some people who have sensitive skin issues. Basically, what the aluminum does in a deodorant is it blocks your armpit sweat ducts to minimize body odor, which is why many choose to use natural deodorants that unblock those ducts so theyâre working in their natural process.

For a more in-depth look at why you may want to start using aluminum-free deodorants if you havenât already, read our article, Beginner’s guide to natural deodorant: How to make the switch.

The Truth About The Risks Of Deodorant And Antiperspirant

You may have heard that the aluminum in antiperspirants increases the risk of breast cancer.

Theres also a rumor that it causes Alzheimers disease or kidney failure.

None of these scary stories are true .

A few minutes on sites run by the American Cancer Society, Alzheimers Association, and the National Kidney Foundation will tell you the truth.

The myth is unfounded. Aluminum, in this case, is a scientific breakthrough that makes humanity smell a lot better than it used to. It also reduces wetness under the arms.

The aluminum salt in antiperspirant reacts chemically with water in sweat. Then, it prevents the sweat ducts from releasing moisture.

Even if you nick yourself while shaving, then apply antiperspirant and deodorant to the broken skin, no dangerous amount enters your body.

There is no need to panic.

As for regular deodorant, it doesnt stop the sweating, but it controls the odor. It does that by disrupting the bacteria that cause the stink.

If you have an allergic reaction to either product, its probably due to other ingredients like fragrances or preservatives.

Both may have a preservative called parabens in them. The jurys still out about how dangerous parabens are as they may affect hormones .

In the meantime, its easy these days to find products without parabens phthalates.

In the reviews below, Ill cover natural deodorants as well as commercial brands youll recognize.

Then, Ive chosen commercial deodorants made for sensitive skin.

How To Choose Apregnancy Safe Deodorant

Now that you know the dangers of certain ingredients found in deodorants, its time to take action.

If your current deodorant has any of the ingredients listed above, please consider switching. A good start is your local health food store or Whole Foods and peruse the natural section. But it doesnt stop there.

Many of the natural stores will still sell products with these toxic ingredients. So you must read the ingredients. General rule of thumb: the less ingredients, the better.

Deodorant isnt always one-destink-fits-all, especially in the natural category. They all work a little differently depending on your body. Ive tested out my fair share and below are my faves.

Now listen up: these natural deodorants are not antiperspirants meaning theyre not going to clog your pores and stop you from sweating . But they do contain effective sweat-absorbing ingredients to help keep you dry.

What To Expect When Switching To A Natural Deodorant

Go Aluminum Free with Dove 0% Aluminum, Aluminum-Free Deodorant Spray

Repeat after us: You CAN live without an antiperspirant. Sweat is a necessary function in your body to detoxify and keep balanced. And heres the good news: the aluminium in antiperspirant is why your shirts are yellowing, not sweat.

There may be an initial period of extra sweat. Please dont sweat it: this is completely normal. Your body is purging some toxins thats what we want for baby! The natural deodorant is allowing your skin to breathe. It will regulate in a week or two, so you have to hang in there.

Alternatives To Deodorant That You Can Make At Home

Some pregnant women prefer to use other methods to avoid body odor. Others fear that their use of deodorant may affect their baby. Here are some alternatives that you can try:

    • Use wipes with natural ingredients when wiping away sweat and prevent body odor.
    • Apply powder , cornstarch, or baking powder on your armpits to absorb sweat.
    • Wear clothes with thin and light material especially if only at home.
    • Removing your bra is also one of the ways that help pregnant women relieve body heat.
    • Aloe vera can also be applied to the armpit as a moisturizer. Just make sure to rinse it with water to avoid any skin irritation.

Look closely at the label of your favorite deodorant now that youre pregnant. You want to steer clear of parabens, which are preservatives that have been linked to birth defects. And anything containing synthetic fragrance is definitely questionable. Other ingredients to stay away from in your underarm products are PEG 20, propylene glycol, triclosan and sodium benzoate.

Another big issue with deodorant is that the aluminum-based compounds that prevent you from becoming a sweaty mess are believed by some to be potentially cancer-causing. More research needs to be performed on the subject, but thats pretty scary! The major problem with that? The aluminum really works to keep you from sweating! We tried out a bunch of different natural deodorants on the market and are sad to say it was tough to find anything that kept us as dry and smell-free.

Is Aluminium In Deodorant Safe During Pregnancy

There isnt any hard evidence on the effects of aluminum deodorants on pregnant women, but there are concerns it affects hormone production and might even be neurotoxic. Its best to avoid aluminum deodorants when pregnant, just in case.

One study found children to be more susceptible to heavy metal effects than adults. The best deodorants for pregnant women dont include aluminum and other harmful chemicals. Pregnancy deodorants should be made from natural ingredients and not contain any alcohol or toxic chemicals. If there isnt hard evidence for ingredients such as aluminum its probably best to avoid when pregnant.

Is Dove Deodorant Ok To Use During Pregnancy

Is dove deodorant ok to use during pregnancy?

Im confused, why wouldnt it be?

If youre having a reaction to it Id suggest trying a sent free or sensitive version maybe try Toms deodorant.

While pregnant yes but after my baby was born he had very sensitive skin and I had to change multiple times what I used and could not have any Scented products on me and had to even change laundry soap

not in my opinion. Most dove deodorant is toxic. Check skin deep or avoid anything with the word fragrance in the ingredients

agreed! I check skin deep for literally everything- dove deodorant rates a 5 at best. I use Humble Brands

I live in the southeast and have had good luck with Schmidt’s natural deodorant, too. it’s priced more reasonably than a lot of other brands.

I sure hope so because I’ve used dove since college. I used it all through my last pregnancy and still using it during this one

Some deodorants are toxic and should be avoided. Shes not asking a dumb question.

Personally I try to avoid anything that has an antiperspirant in it.

yeah I know. I hadnt used it in years then got really stinky in my first trimester and had to buy some to get me through. Now Im back on non antiperspirant.

some people cant go without antiperspirant.

I agree. I dont understand what some people get out of trying to make other people feel dumb. OP, Deodorant wise- I always try to avoid ones with aluminum.

Ive used dove all 3 pregnancy, 3 perfectly fine healthy babies
