When Does Pregnancy Acne Go Away
When acne goes away depends on a lot of factors. If youve had a risk-free pregnancy and arent too stressed, expect it to go away in the third trimester or shortly after giving birth.
It can linger post-pregnancy because hormones are still fluctuating in the body during these periods, says Seelal. Unfortunately, there is no set time frame. Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different as well.
Anxiety during your pregnancy or after can trigger acne as well, regardless of how far along you are. Its not just the fact of carrying a child, its all the other things that come along with that, Skotnicki says. Some people will find the stress or worry will aggravate their acne, and that can be at different times. If your acne persists, and you want to treat acne while breastfeeding, many over-the-counter treatments including benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are considered safe. Talk to your pharmacist about whats right for you.
Try not to stress and remember that the acne, whether you have it and when you have it, isnt something you can decideyour hormones are leading the charge here.

What And What Not To Use
During pregnancy, the typical acne treatments containing retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are best avoided. Products that contain alpha hydroxy acids and sulfur based are considered safe and effective.
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring antibacterial that also has keratolytic, comedolytic and antioxidant activity. This means it kills acne causing p. Acnes bacteria on the skin surface. In addition, it loosens skin cells so they dont clog pores, reduces inflammation, and decreases hyperpigmentation.
Glycolic acid is another naturally occurring alpha hydroxyl acid derived from sugarcane. It works by speeding up the process of exfoliating dead skin cells and eliminating excess oil. This helps reduce pimple causing clogged pores and encourages new, fresh skin cells to come to the surface.
Sulfur based products have antimicrobial effects and are effective in drying out excess oil. While they are effective, most preparations have a strong, unpleasant scent that limits use in pregnant women who are hypersensitive to stinky smells.

Other Topical Acne Treatments And Pregnancy
Some experts recommend topical prescription products containing either azelaic acid or erythromycin. Other options include over-the-counter products that contain either benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid. Only about 5% of the active medication applied to the skin is absorbed into the body. So it’s believed that such medications would not pose an increased risk of birth defects.
But itâs important to remember that many topical medications have not been adequately studied in pregnancy. So again, be sure to talk to your doctor before you start any acne treatment.

Get In With A Dermatologist Sooner Rather Than Later
If you are suffering from pregnancy acne, your dermatologist should be your best friend. First of all, there are forms of folliculitis that can mimic acne. Early diagnosis and proper management can save a lot of frustration. Also, dermatologists offer face saving extractions, cortisone injections, and if necessary, pregnancy safe prescriptions and procedures to help your acne.
An extraction procedure is a medical grade facial, where a dermatologist uses a sterile tool called a comedone extractor to remove clogged pores. Since clogged pores turn into pimples, it is beneficial to eliminate them!
Cystic pimples begin underground, can be painful, and often leave marks behind. Fortunately, a tiny dose of liquid cortisone can be injected into cysts to decrease the inflammation and shrink them quickly. Cortisone shots contain a minute amount of dilute cortisone. Since there is very limited systemic absorption, it is considered a safe option throughout pregnancy and while nursing.
Other pregnancy safe procedures include blue light facials, microdermabrasion, and glycolic acid peels. If prescriptions are necessary, there are options such as topical and oral antibiotics as well as prescription strength azelaic acid.
Pregnancy acne is unavoidable for some women. However, it can be treated and improved safely by optimizing skin care, incorporating alpha hydroxy acids, and working with a trusted dermatologist in New York. To learn more, contact us at Spring Street Dermatology.

Which Fruit Gives Colour To Baby During Pregnancy

Often, these breakouts decrease as the pregnancy continues into the third trimester.
If you do experience better skin in your third trimester, keep in mind that hormone fluctuations are not over. This may mean your acne will reappear.
“Hormones continue to fluctuate during the fourth trimester after the baby has arrived,” says Natalie Aguilar, a dermatological nurse and celebrity aesthetician. “Nursing a baby also stimulates hormones so that our body can continue to make milk. Even if one decides that nursing is not for them, it takes a while for our once-elevated pregnancy hormones to return to normal.” This can delay your return to clearer skin.
Additionally, lifestyle factors while pregnant or while caring for a newborn can also lead to breakouts. “Fatigue can cause our skin to become sluggish and prone to breakouts that may not be hormone-related,” says Aguilar.

How To Prevent Hormonal Acne During Pregnancy
Though a surge in hormones during pregnancy can also lead to a “pregnancy glow,” it is also what causes acne. “It is a double-edged sword,” explains Dr. Gohara. “Some women are glowing and some women are more predisposed to acne. Some women have zero acne before and then acne during pregnancy. Some people have acne before then no acne in pregnancy.” In other words, there is no rhyme or reason for acne during pregnancy. “You can’t predict whether it is going to happen to you,” she says. Which means it can be nearly impossible to prevent.
You also can’t predict what type of acne you will have, or where it will occur. “I have seen it occur both on the chin, and everywhere, and also in different forms,” says Dr. Gohara. She has seen pregnant people experiencing everything from whiteheads and blackheads, to deep cystic acne and inflammatory acne. “It is all acne at the end of the day,” says Dr. Gohara.
The good news is that the lifestyle changes many people make naturally when they become pregnant, like eliminating alcohol and highly processed foods and drinking more water, also decrease your likelihood of acne and inflammation during pregnancy, says Dr. Gohara.
When Does Pregnancy Acne Start
Pregnancy acne begins most often during the first trimester, usually at around six weeks, and even into your second trimester, says Angie Seelal, RPA-C, a physician assistant specializing in dermatology at Advanced Dermatology in Long Island, New York. Acne can improve during the first trimester, but could worsen during the third trimester due to increased sebum production.

It’s not the most effective acne treatment, though, and is most often prescribed along with another acne treatment.

Pregnancy Acne: Unsafe Treatments
Isotretinoin is an oral medication that has revolutionized the way severe acne is treated. But it’s especially dangerous when youâre pregnant. That’s because the drug can cause serious birth defects.
Any patient who takes isotretinoin, as well as any doctor who prescribes it, pharmacy that dispenses it, and wholesaler who distributes it, must enroll in a special program that’s part of a risk-management program to prevent pregnancy and birth defects.
Because the risks are so high, women of childbearing age who take the drug need to be on two forms of birth control starting at least 1 month before they begin treatment. They also need to stay on two forms of birth control for at least 1 month after treatment ends. Also, women must have pregnancy tests before, during, and after treatment.
Other prescription acne treatments that can cause birth defects include:

What Acne Treatment Should You Avoid During Pregnancy
Some skin care ingredients are potentially risky to baby and have been associated with birth defects, says Dr. Gaither. A few ingredients you should avoid include:
- Retinols and retinoids. Dr. Gaither advises moms-to-be to stop using both prescription retinoids and over-the-counter retinol products.
- Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. There’s some debate about whether these common acne-fighters are safe. Many doctors say you should avoid them, but the American Academy of Dermatology says they may be okay in small doses. To be safe, ask your doctor before using products with these ingredients.
It can be helpful to look for cleansers and spot treatments with these active ingredients, which are thought to be safe for pregnancy, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists :
- Azelaic acid
- Glycolic acid
Pro tip: At your next OB/GYN visit, bring a bag of your skincare products, says Dr. Gaither. Your doctor will be able to look over the list of ingredients and give you better advice than if you simply told her what products you were using.

Benefits Of Using Benzoyl Peroxide During Pregnancy
Benzoyl peroxide can be a helpful step in your skincare routine at any time, but its especially great for treating some of the issues that come up during pregnancy as your hormones rise.
In pregnancy, sebaceous glands increase activity, leading to increased oiliness and oftentimes increased acne and breakouts, Dr. Fahs says.Benzoyl peroxide may be a helpful ingredient to reduce comedonal acne and decrease acne causing bacteria that contribute to breakouts.
Benzoyl peroxide works particularly well for the treatment and prevention of inflammatory acne, like pustules and nodules. Its also helpful for treating cystic acne, which is typically a hard bump below the skins surface. Benzoyl peroxide treats one of the major causes of cystic acne: P.acne bacteria.
Is Pimples Normal During Pregnancy
Many women experience acne during pregnancy. Its most common during the first and second trimesters. An increase in hormones called androgens can cause the glands in your skin to grow and produce more sebum an oily, waxy substance. This oil can clog pores and lead to bacteria, inflammation, and breakouts.

Dry Skin And Stretch Marks
Theres no doubt that pregnancy requires a lot from your body, so if your baby-to-be needs more water at any point, it will pull it from your body. That in addition to hormone changes can lead to dry skin.
In addition to drinking plenty of water, moisturizing products that have coconut oil, cocoa butter, peptides, and hyaluronic acid can improve hydration. And when it comes to stretch marks, one strategy to prevent them is frequently moisturizing prone zones to help the skin stretch naturally as your bump grow.
Using Other Acne Treatments During Pregnancy
Its more difficult to say what can safely treat acne while youre pregnant. Researchers dont give pregnant women medications, so there are no studies to tell us what happens when pregnant women use a treatment.
What we know comes from animal studies and women who have used acne treatments while pregnant. From this, researchers have learned the following about acne medications:
Adapalene : Most experts recommend stopping this treatment during pregnancy.
Antibiotics : Applying clindamycin during pregnancy is thought to be safe. Before using it while youre pregnant, its best to check with your obstetrician or dermatologist.
Antibiotics : Cefadroxil is an antibiotic that can help clear severe acne. In giving pregnant animals large amounts of this antibiotic, researchers havent seen birth defects.
The antibiotics that are often used to treat acne, such as azithromycin and clarithromycin, also seem safe during pregnancy. A few women, however, have had a baby with a birth defect while taking one of these. We dont know for certain whether the antibiotic caused the birth defect.
