Placenta And Embryo Begin Forming

Pin on Pregnancy

While you may have just started to wonder whether you’re pregnant, your soon-to-be baby has already found its home: The blastocyst has completed its journey from your fallopian tube to your uterus.

Once there, it burrows into your uterine lining and implants making that unbreakable connection to you that’ll last the next eight months .

As soon as that little ball of cells is settled in your uterus, it will undergo the great divide, splitting into two groups. Half of what’s now called the embryo will become your son or daughter, while the other half forms the placenta, your baby’s lifeline which channels nutrients and carries waste away until delivery.

Your Baby’s Changes This Week

Scared about my future: 26 week pregnancy doctor appointment
  • This week your baby is the size of a full-stop, or a poppy seed. It is still barely visible to the naked eye.
  • In the 4th week of pregnancy there is a lot of organisation and cell separation going on. Three distinct layers of cells start to form. The ectoderm , will eventually become the baby’s skin, eyes, hair, their nervous system, their brain, and even the enamel of their teeth. The middle layer will become their skeleton, muscles and kidneys, tissues and vascular system. The layer on the inside will eventually become their internal organs.
  • Once a cell has a specific function, it can t become a different type of cell. Every one is pre-programmed from the start and knows what to do and what it is to become.

What Does My Baby Look Like

Your baby, or embryo, is about 2mm long and growing rapidly in your womb. It’s protected by an amniotic sac, which is filled with cushioning fluid, and attached to a tiny yolk sac that provides all the nourishment it needs. The outer layer will later develop into the placenta and provide your baby with oxygen and nutrients.

Development At 32 Weeks

How does a 4 weeks pregnant tummy look like?

The baby weighs almost 4 pounds and is moving around often. The baby’s skin has fewer wrinkles as a layer of fat starts to form under the skin. Between now and delivery, your baby will gain up to half their birth weight. Ask your doctor how to do a fetal movement chart. Think about breastfeeding. You may notice a yellowish fluid leaking from your breasts. That is colostrum, and it happens to get your breasts ready for making milk. What’s Happening In My Body

You probably don’t look pregnant at all. Most first-time mums don’t start showing until at least week 12. However, if this isn’t your first baby, then you may start showing sooner, as the muscles in your uterus and belly may have been stretched from your last pregnancy.

Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period. For around the first 15 days your body will be going through its normal routine â thickening the womb and releasing an egg or two. You’re not technically pregnant then. But around week 2 or 3, if an egg meets sperm and fertilisation occurs, then it’s showtime!

The fertilised egg then travels down a fallopian tube, dividing and redividing, until it reaches the womb. It will then bury itself into the wall where your little bundle will make itself very comfy for the next nine months. At four weeks, your egg is now an embryo â and you are pregnant!

Second And Third Trimesters

Second- or third-trimester spotting or bleeding is concerning and is more likely to be due to a pregnancy complication. Late bleeding can sometimes put your fetus and you in serious danger.

Always call your doctor right away if you notice any spotting or bleeding after the first trimester

The bleeding could indicate one of the following:

  • Placental abruption: This is when the placenta detaches from the uterine wall before or during labor.
  • Preterm labor: Labor has begun prior to week 37 of gestation.
  • Placenta previa: The placenta is low-lying in the uterus and either partially or totally covers the cervix.

The best way to confirm conception is with a pregnancy test, either at home or at a clinic.

Babys Heartbeat Is Audible On Ultrasound

While its way too early to feel anything, its not too early to possibly hear something. Your babys heart is developed enough and has grown large enough for its beats to be heard with a Doppler, a handheld ultrasound device that amplifies the lub-dub sound the heart makes.

But dont worry if your practitioner cant pick up the sound of your babys heartbeat yet. It just means your shy guy is hiding in the corner of your uterus or has his back facing out, making it hard for the Doppler to find its target. In a few weeks, or at your next visit, that miraculous sound is certain to be audible for your listening pleasure.

Once your pregnancy test turns positive, youll want to call your doctor or midwife to set up your first prenatal appointment. Dont worry if the due date is far in the future. Most women are seen for the first time around week 8.

Depending on your healthcare providers protocol, you may also need to head into the office to have some preliminary blood work. This will confirm your pregnancy and check your hormone levels. One test will check your hCG. This number should double about every 48 to 72 hours. The other will check your progesterone levels.

Both tests are repeated at least once to assess the increase in numbers.

Even at week 4, its never too early to start healthy habits. Try eating whole foods, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and, if you arent already, start taking a prenatal vitamin.

Exercise is also a great way to ease pregnancy symptoms and keep your body and baby healthy. Typically any activity you were doing before pregnancy is safe to continue in the first trimester. For vigorous exercise, you may want to speak with your doctor about certain changes that might be necessary.
