What Is The Likelihood Of Getting Pregnant On Nexplanon

How Is A Contraceptive Implant Fitted Or Removed

STORY TIME | I got pregnant on NEXPLANON !

A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area on the inside of your upper arm.

The implant is then inserted under your skin it only takes a few minutes to put in and feels like having an injection. You wont need any stitches after your implant has been fitted.

Nexplanon works for 3 years before it needs to be replaced. You can use this method until you reach the menopause, when a woman’s monthly periods stop naturally.

The implant can be removed at any time by a specially trained doctor or nurse. It only takes a few minutes to remove, and a local anaesthetic will be used. The doctor or nurse will make a tiny cut in your skin to gently pull the implant out.

As soon as the implant has been removed, you’ll no longer be protected against pregnancy.

What To Do If You Cant Feel The Nexplanon Implant

If you cannot feel the NEXPLANON implant, contact your healthcare provider immediately and use a non-hormonal birth control method until your healthcare provider confirms that the implant is in place. You may need special tests to check that the implant is in place or to help find the implant when it is time to take it out.

When Do You Get Your Period After Implanon

I got my implanon removed on the 5th January 2011, had spotting on the 19th February which only lasted a day I done a pregnancy test on the 22nd but it was negative. I was at the docs today and asked her when period should return after implanon and she told me that it should have returned by now.

My second Implanon proved totally different to my first one. 9 months on and Ive still been having my period for 3 weeks straight or spotting for two months, occasionally having to wear a tampon or never knowing when my period will strike. It was an inconvenience for sure]

What To Expect At The Doctor’s Office

Your doctor or another health care professional will inject medicine to numb your skin on your upper arm, where you’ll get the implant. That may sting a bit.

Then they’ll use a tool that pushes the rod in through a needle. That wonât hurt. It feels like a little bit of tugging. The process may take less than a minute.

Afterward, you should be able to feel the implant under your skin but not see it.

You Can Have It Removed At Any Time

Has Anyone Gotten Pregnant On Nexplanon

If you change your mind and want to become pregnant before the implant expires, you can make an appointment with your doctor to have the implant removed. Myth: Complications With Method

Some women who seek family planning believe that implants can cause complications in the arm in which they are inserted or that they can travel from the insertion site to other parts of the body.

Fact: Implants cannot travel to other parts of the body

They remain where they are inserted until they are removed. In rare cases, a rod may start to come out of the skin, usually during the first four months since insertion. This typically happens because the implants were not inserted well or because of an infection at the insertion site. If expulsion occurs, the woman should return to the clinic as soon as possible and use a back-up family planning method in the meantime. Providers can replace the rods.

Myth: Getting An Implant Is Painful And Could Cause Infection

Some women who seek family planning believe that the insertion of implants requires surgery or that insertion is painful and causes infection. They may also have misconceptions about the removal of implants.

Fact: No stitches, no noticeable scar, and it can be removed at any time

Health professionals with specific training perform a minor surgical procedure to insert implants. The provider gives the patient an injection of local anesthetic under the skin of her arm to prevent pain while the implants are inserted. This injection may sting. The woman remains fully awake during the procedure. Insertion takes an average of 4 to 5 minutes for Norplant, 2.5 minutes for Jadelle, and 1.5 minutes for Implanon. Insertion can take more or less time, depending on the skill of the provider.

The incision is small and stitches are not required. In most cases, insertion does not leave a noticeable scar. Once inserted, the outline of the implants underneath the skin can be felt and sometimes seen. The woman may have bruising and feel pain or soreness for a few days afterward.

Infection at the insertion site can occur, but is uncommon. When infection occurs, it is usually within the first two months after insertion. In rare cases, implants may start to come out of the skin. When this occurs, it is usually due to improper insertion or infection.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider About Before Using Nexplanon

Talk to your healthcare provider about using Nexplanon if you:

  • Have diabetes
  • HIV medicines
  • Hepatitis C Virus medicines

Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if your medicine is one listed above.

If you are taking medicines or herbal products that might make Nexplanon less effective, you and your doctor may decide to leave Nexplanon in place in that case, an additional non-hormonal contraceptive should be used. Because the effect of another medicine on Nexplanon may last up to 28 days after stopping the medicine, it is necessary to use the additional non-hormonal contraceptive for that long.

When you are using Nexplanon, tell all of your healthcare providers that you have Nexplanon in place in your arm.

Getting Contraception During Coronavirus

If you need contraception, call your GP surgery or a sexual health clinic as soon as possible. Only go in person if asked to.

It might not be possible to have an implant fitted or replaced at the moment.

You normally have a contraceptive implant for 3 years, but it can be left in and will continue to work for up to 4 years.

The risk of getting pregnant during the 4th year is very low. If youre worried about getting pregnant, you could use condoms or the progestogen-only pill as well.

How Effective Is The Implant At Preventing Pregnancy

pregnant while on nexplanon

The implant is a very effective method of long acting contraception, and while no form of contraception is completely failsafe, using it makes the risk of a woman getting pregnant far less likely.

It is estimated that 84% of women would get pregnant within a year if they had regular, unprotected intercourse.1

For women using the contraceptive implant, the chances of getting pregnant are less than 1%, providing the implant has been in place for less than three years. So, for every 100 women with an implant having intercourse, less than one will become pregnant over the course of one year.2

This number is similar to the efficacy of the combined oral contraceptive pill .

While your implant is in place, it releases a steady amount of the hormone progesterone. However, the amount it releases decreases slightly year on year. This is why it needs replacing after three years. Research has shown that during this three-year period, for women of a healthy body weight, the implant becomes no less effective at preventing pregnancy however.3

Other methods of contraception including the copper coil, the Mirena coil, and the contraceptive injection, all have similar failure rates to the implant. If you compare this to the withdrawal method, which has a 27% rate of pregnancy within a year when used typically,5 you will see why this is not a recommended method of contraception.

Does The The Pill Affect Fertility

The short answer: The pill doesnt affect future fertility.

The long answer: The pill uses hormones to stop ovulation, as well as thickening the cervical mucus so sperm cant travel easily to fertilise the eggs.

The pill doesnt have an effect on future fertility. Many women will return to their natural levels of hormone secretion very quickly after they stop taking the pill usually within a couple of days or weeks. However, it can take up to twelve months for a normal cycle to return. Studies suggest that between 79% and 96% of women are able to get pregnant within 12 months of going off the pill.

Theres no evidence to suggest that the pill will cause infertility or long-term fertility issues.

Certain people should not use Nexplanon. The FDA states the following groups should avoid using it:

Myth: Health Risks And Side Effects

Chances Of Getting Pregnant On Pill And Pull Out ...

Some women who seek family planning do not want to use implants because they have misconceptions about implants causing illness or problems such as cancer, blindness, or birth defects.

Fact: Implants have several known health benefits

In addition to changes in menstrual bleeding, the most common side effects of implants are headaches, abdominal pain, and breast tenderness. These side effects are not an indication of illness and usually lessen or go away within the first year of use. Studies have not shown increased risk of cancer, blindness or birth defects with the use of implants.

They have been shown to greatly reduce the risk of ectopic pregnancy and protect against symptomatic pelvic inflammatory disease. Implants may also help protect against iron-deficiency anemia.

Barrier Methods And Natural Methods

If you were using a barrier method, there is good news. These methods do not interfere with fertility. Barrier methods include:

Barrier methods block sperm from reaching your egg. These methods do not stop ovulation. Whether you are using them or not, your monthly cycle does not change.

As an added bonus, condoms also protect you from sexually transmitted infections . Left untreated, some STIs can lead to infertility.

Some people use natural family planning methods. If this is you, you may be able to get pregnant faster. Many of these methods have you keep track of your most fertile days. So now, just do the reverse. Instead of avoiding sex around those days, go try to make a baby.
