Tracking Ovulation To Find Your Fertile Window

There are many methods of tracking and predicting ovulation so you can try to figure out when you are most fertile. An ovulation day calculator may provide an estimate, but isn’t always the most accurate of methods, especially if you have irregular periods.

Some ways to try to pinpoint your ovulation period at home include over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits, body basal temperature charting, and checking for fertile cervical mucus.

Ovulation predictor kits increase your chance of getting pregnant by 40%, according to a review of research. Each kit comes with five or so test strips or sticks, and manufacturers typically recommend you test your urine for several days leading up to your suspected ovulation day. This makes this method can potentially costly, especially if you have somewhat irregular periods and you have to test for many days on end.

Among no-cost home ovulation-tracking methods, checking the texture of your cervical mucus may work best. According to research, people who had sex when they had slippery, egg-white-like cervical mucus were two to three times more likely to conceive than those who had scant or absent mucus secretions .

If Your Cycles Are Very Regular

You may be able to determine when you ovulate by doing some simple math: in the average menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days before the menstrual period arrives or on day 14 of a 28-day cycle. So if you subtract 14 days from the length of your cycle, you’ll get an idea of when you ovulate. For example: A woman with a regular 30-day cycle probably ovulates around day 16 a woman with a regular 26-day cycle, around day 12.

Ovulation Date: How Is Ovulation Calculated How Many Days After My Period Do I Ovulate

So now that we know what it is, how many days after your period can you expect to ovulate? Well, the complicated thing is that everyone is different but usually, you can tell when you will ovulate by the length of your cycle.

The first day of your cycle is the first day of your period, and typically, most people will ovulate anywhere from 7 to 21 days into their cycle. Where exactly ovulation falls within that bracket depends on how long your cycle is. Normal menstrual cycles can range from every 21 days to every 35 days, says Dr. Boyle. The time from ovulation to the next menstrual bleed will always be about 14 days thats generally the same for all women. But the time from the beginning of a period until ovulation is what can vary.

The Definitive Guide to Trying to Conceive

The average menstrual cycle is 28-35 days. Ovulation usually happens between days 11 and 21 of your cycle. A hormone called luteinizing hormone surges, triggering the release of the egg that’s most ripe. At the same time, your cervical mucus becomes more slippery to help sperm make their way to the egg.

When To See A Fertility Doctor

If youre having intercourse twice a week for a year and you arent getting pregnant, its unlikely that timing is to blame. Something else could be at play and you should see your doctor to tackle the challenge together. If you are 35 or older, see a fertility specialist after 6 months of trying to get pregnant.

You should also seek care if you know you have polycystic ovary syndrome or irregular periods. For example, if youve been taking birth control for years and dont get your period within three months after you stop taking it, make an appointment. Otherwise, you could waste time collecting data with an ovulation kit and be nowhere closer to conceiving.

Medication Ask Your Doctor First

Unless your doctor tells you to, don’t take any medications while pregnant, even over-the-counter medicines like cold or allergy tablets, anti-inflammatory drugs, or pain relievers. Anything you take eventually makes its way to your baby, so it’s best to be safe. If you took medication before you got pregnant, your doctor can tell you whether you need to keep taking it or adjust your medication.

After youve had sex during your most fertile days, it can seem like a bit of a waiting game until you can take a pregnancy test . The good news is these 2 weeks dont have to feel like a completely black box!

While ovulation tests provide great information about when youre most fertile, they actually dont tell you anything about whether or not ovulation occurred. Nor do they give insight into successful ovulation, meaning if your ovulation is going to allow for a higher chance at pregnancy.

PdG is the marker of progesterone found in urine. Its only released after ovulation occurs, meaning its presence confirms ovulation.

Additionally, having enough PdG after ovulation is critical to determining whether or not that ovulation was successful. A successful ovulation can lead to a higher chance of pregnancy, as it can signal that your body is prepared to accept that pregnancy.

What Is The Calendar Method Of Determining Fertility

Our tool above is a simplified and automated version of the calendar method of determining fertility.

To get an even more accurate idea of when you, personally, are most fertile, you can record your menstrual cycle on a calendar for eight to 12 months. The first day of your period is Day 1. Circle Day 1 on the calendar. The length of your cycle may vary from month to month. So write down the total number of days it lasts each time. Using this record, you can find the days you are most fertile in the months ahead:

To find out the first day when you are most fertile, subtract 18 from the total number of days in your shortest cycle. Take this new number and count ahead that many days from the first day of your next period. Draw an X through this date on your calendar. The X marks the first day you’re likely to be fertile. To find out the last day when you are most fertile, subtract 11 from the total number of days in your longest cycle. Take this new number and count ahead that many days from the first day of your next period. Draw an X through this date on your calendar. The time between the two Xs is your most fertile window.

This method always should be used along with other fertility awareness methods, especially if your cycles are not always the same length.

It’s Fine To Get Frisky

Unless your doctor says otherwise, having sex is safe during pregnancy. You may have to try some new things to accommodate your new figure. Your breasts and nipples might be sensitive. Talk to your partner about what feels good to you. As your belly grows, you might need to try different positions. Let your doctor know if sex causes any cramping or bleeding.

Using Ovulation Calculators And Kits

Ovulation calendars and kits can also help you predict ovulation.

Ovulation calendars are available on websites such as www.yourfertility.org.au, and use the date of your last period and the length of your cycle to predict when you are likely to be most fertile.

Home ovulation predictor kits are available from pharmacies. You use the kit a few days before your predicted ovulation day, to test for a rise in the level of a hormone called luteinising hormone in your urine. A positive result indicates you will ovulate within the next 24 to 36 hours.

A blood test, which your doctor can order, can also detect ovulation by measuring levels of the hormone progesterone.

If you are trying to get pregnant, there are also a number of other things you should consider, such as taking folate, maintaining a healthy diet and making sure your vaccinations are up to date.

During the first trimester it might seem like you sleep all the time. By the third trimester, getting a good night’s sleep is more difficult. Frequent urination, heartburn, discomfort, and even anxiety can keep you awake. Try sleeping on your left side, using pillows behind you and between your legs. Exercise during the day rather than the evening. Don’t drink too many fluids before bed.

  • Unblocked and healthy fallopian tubes and uterus

What Is The Basal Body Temperature Method Of Determining Fertility

Basal body temperature is your temperature at rest as soon as you awake in the morning. A woman’s basal body temperature rises slightly with ovulation. So by recording this temperature daily for several months, you’ll be able to predict your most fertile days.

Basal body temperature differs slightly from woman to woman. Anywhere from 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit orally is average before ovulation. After ovulation most women have an oral temperature between 97 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The rise in temperature can be a sudden jump or a gradual climb over a few days.

Usually a woman’s basal body temperature rises by only 0.4 to 0.8 degrees Fahrenheit. To detect this tiny change, women must use a basal body thermometer. These thermometers are very sensitive. Most pharmacies sell them for about $10.

The rise in temperature doesn’t show exactly when the egg is released. But almost all women have ovulated within three days after their temperatures spike. Body temperature stays at the higher level until your period starts.

You are most fertile and most likely to get pregnant:

Two to three days before your temperature hits the highest point 12 to 24 hours after ovulation

A man’s sperm can live for up to three days in a woman’s body. The sperm can fertilize an egg at any point during that time. So if you have unprotected sex a few days before ovulation, you could get pregnant.

Your Cervical Mucus Has An Egg White

When is the last time you checked your underwear? Or, ahem, felt your down-there discharge? It may sound odd, but your cervical mucus can provide a tip-off to when sex will be most fruitful. You’re looking for discharge that feels like egg whites, which indicates your body’s in ovulation mode.

Once you start monitoring your CM all month, you’ll see a pattern: You’ll likely be dry for several days to a week after your period. Next, your CM may get sticky for a day or two. Then, on around day eight, it will amp up and turn creamy it could be white or pale yellow.

The next stage is the biggie: ovulation mucus. Your discharge will not only be plentiful but slippery and stretchy . This egg-white stage is a clue that you’re ovulating and you and your partner may want to skip dinner and a movie and get busy being intimate.

Incidentally, that CM texture is nature’s way of ensuring sperm make their way to the egg. Finally, after ovulation day, you may become drier down there.
