Is There A Higher Risk Of Pregnancy Complications After Iud Removal

Every form of birth control comes with some risk, which is why you may wonder if theres a higher risk of pregnancy complications after IUD removal.

The good news, says Zaher Merhi, MD, board certified OB-GYN and fertility expert at New Hope Fertility Center, is theres no increased risk of ectopic pregnancy after IUD removal.

However, he does point out that if you get pregnant while the IUD is still in the uterus, you have a higher chance of having an ectopic pregnancy.

And if youre hoping for twins, dont count on prior use of an IUD to increase your chances. Merhi says there are no higher risks of having twins after IUD removal.

Difficulty getting pregnant after IUD removal may often have nothing to do with an IUD. In most circumstances, birth control methods dont delay fertility.

According to a 2018 review of studies , contraceptive use regardless of duration and type doesnt have a negative effect on the ability to conceive after removal or discontinuation. The researchers also found that it doesnt delay fertility.

In fact, of the 14,884 women included in the study review, 83 percent were able to get pregnant within the first 12 months after contraceptive discontinuation. This includes the removal of IUDs, with 2,374 women making up the group of IUD users.

Anyone with irregular cycles, heavy, painful menses, or who has been trying to conceive for 12 months without success or 6 months without success should see a physician, explains Scotchie.

How Does An Iud Work

An IUD is a good option for women who want a highly effective, long-term, easily reversible method of contraception. It can be an appropriate choice for women who can’t use certain hormonal methods like birth control pills or women who don’t like taking pills . Keep in mind that, like the Pill, an IUD won’t protect you from sexually transmitted infections .

The copper IUD releases copper into the uterus, which works by confusing the sperm, making it harder for it to implant in the endometrium. The hormonal IUDs release a form of the hormone progestin into the uterus. The progestin thickens the cervical mucus so that sperm can’t reach the egg. The copper IUD may also be used for emergency contraception. If it’s inserted within five days after unprotected sex, it’s more effective than taking emergency contraceptive pills. Plus, you can leave it in for ongoing contraception.

With the progestin IUD, it’s common to have very irregular bleeding and spotting in the first three to six months. Eventually, your periods may become much lighter and shorter than they were before the IUD and you may have less cramping. Especially with the Mirena and Liletta, many women develop infrequent periods or stop getting them altogether.

False Negative Pregnancy Tests

If youve taken a pregnancy test and believe that a negative result is wrong, the best thing to do is wait for at least two days and test again. Often, if you test too early, the hCG levels will be below the threshold of detection of many home pregnancy tests.

HCG levels are typically expected to double every two days if you are pregnant. If you are pregnant and you wait another two days before testing again, the levels should double again, increasing your chance of an accurate reading.

If, on the other hand, you are undergoing IVF or IUI, it is best to follow your doctors instructions and wait to get an in-office blood hCG test. While having to hold off two weeks can add anxiety to an already emotional process, the risk of a false positive test may be more upsetting than waiting for an accurate reading.
