What Does A Miscarriage Feel Like? The Physical Aspect of Pregnancy Loss- Cramping, Bleeding, etc.

If youre paying close attention, you might feel a contraction of the uterus during implantation. Otherwise, youll only pass it off as any other stomach pain. You might also mistake it for menstrual cramps. While its one of the first signs of pregnancy, it is unreliable as a sole sign of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Cramps Vs Period Cramps

Pregnancy cramps in the first trimester are usually mild and felt in the pelvic and lower abdomen area. And believe it or not, cramping during pregnancy can feel a lot like period cramping. The only real way to know if they are PMS or pregnancy is if your period arrives within a few days.

But implantation cramping is different from period cramping so lets get into it!

Period Cramping

Period cramps happen during a period as long as you arent pregnant. They occur when the uterus contracts to expel its lining. Pain and inflammation can also occur during this process.

Pregnancy Cramping

Not everyone experiences cramps during implantation in the first trimester of pregnancy. But if you do, its usually pretty mild or moderate. Anything that feels intense, though, should be monitored by your doctor.

Implantation occurs between six to twelve days after ovulation, which is about the time when a person would start their period.

If the egg has been fertilized, your body will prepare the uterus lining to receive and protect the egg rather than expel the lining like you do during your period.

Its possible that you will experience some light bleeding but not everyone does.

What Period Cramps Feel Like

Cramps can vary in intensity and duration for everyone. They typically vary over the course of your period, with the pain or discomfort lessening after the first few days. This is because the level of prostaglandins is reduced as the uterine lining is shed and the prostaglandins in the lining are expelled from your body.

Often, people will have pain in their lower abdomen or back. But some will only experience pain in the lower back. Some people also experience cramping in their upper thighs.

The uterus is a muscle. When it contracts and relaxes during cramping, it can feel:

  • aching or tightening similar to a muscle cramp-like pain
  • like a mild stomachache, or even a more painful stomachache, like when you have a stomach virus

Along with menstrual cramps, some women also experience:

  • diarrhea or loose bowel movements

Cramps can be uncomfortable or even painful, but they shouldnt keep you home from school or work. That level of pain or discomfort is not typical, and is something you should see your doctor about.

Some cramping with your period is normal and nothing to worry about. Talk to your doctor if:

  • your cramps interfere with your life or daily activities
  • your cramps get worse after the first few days of your period
  • youre over the age of 25 and suddenly start having cramping, or your periods seem more painful than usual

How Do You Tell The Difference Between Implantation Cramps And Your Period

If youre cramping and its still a few days before your period is due, you might wonder whether what youre experiencing is implantation pain and could be anearly sign of pregnancy. Though some women do experience cramps or light spotting during early pregnancy, this isnt one of the common first signs of pregnancy.

At such an early stage in pregnancy, there is absolutely no way to tell whether any symptoms youre experiencing mean you could be pregnant or that your period is just on its way.

Cramping at 4 Weeks of Pregnancy: Should I be Worried?

Yes, it is perfectly normal to experience a cramping pain during implantation, which is when the fertilised egg nestles into the wall of the womb, explains Dr Beckett. Not every pregnant woman will feel it, but for those who do this discomfort is likely to present 10-14 days after conception, or shortly before a woman would expect her next period, she says.

Now you may be thinking: Hang on, 10-14 days isnt the same as four weeks, and youd be right, but the way we count how many weeks pregnant you are, is a bit tricksy. You actually start counting down the weeks from the first day of your last period, which will have been around two weeks before conception.

So your first month of pregnancy is already half way over before you even had sex which is a bit odd perhaps but were grateful for anything that makes those nine months go a little quicker.

When To Worry About Cramps

If your cramping is persistent or severe, do not hesitate to call your physician. It’s better to check on anything that doesn’t seem right rather than ignore something that may be a serious concern.

Severe cramping, in particular, should always be investigated to rule out ectopic pregnancy. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians , the condition occurs in fewer than 2% of pregnancies. However, it is the leading cause of death for pregnant people in the first trimester.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterine cavity, and signs typically appear when you are six to eight weeks pregnant. It’s most often accompanied by one-sided cramping as well as pain in the neck or shoulder and a constant urge to have a bowel movement.

If you think you have signs of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, go to the emergency room right away because it can be life-threatening. Also, if your cramping seems to be focused on one side of your lower abdomen, call your physician to be on the safe side, even if the cramping isn’t severe.

If you are having any kind of vaginal bleeding along with cramping in early pregnancy, you should call your physicianit’s possible that you are having a miscarriage. These symptoms don’t always mean a miscarriage, but your physician will be able to order hCG blood tests or an ultrasound to figure out what’s going on.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms Implantation || Implantation cramping and spotting

During your first trimester, you experience cramps as your body prepares for the pregnancy. You may initially experience cramping in your lower abdomen or lower back even before you know youre pregnant. This is due to implantation, which is the process of the fertilized egg implanting in the uterus. You may feel a small twinge or sharper cramps that may double you over at times. After you know youre pregnant, cramping is due to your uterus growing and expanding to accommodate your growing baby. Its perfectly normal and happens to all women. Cramps often feel similar to your normal menstrual cramps. Once you pass your first trimester, you might experience occasional cramping. Its important to remember that the uterus is a muscle, which means it can contract and cause pain or discomfort. The same can happen when you have gas, constipation, bloating, or even a full bladder.

What Are Implantation Cramps

Implantation occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, signaling the start of a pregnancy, says Jingwen Hou, M.D., Ph.D., an OB-GYN specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii. And this implantation can cause some abdominal cramping, which can feel like a twinge of discomfort or even mild period cramps.

While many people don’t experience any noticeable signs of implantation, about 30% report experiencing some implantation cramps. Sometimes, implantation cramps are accompanied by light pink or brown spotting, but you can also have implantation bleeding without cramps.

How Can I Tell If Im Having Implantation Cramps

Implantation cramping and menstrual cramping can feel similar.

However, implantation cramping and pain are typically not as severe. These cramps are mild, go away quickly, and do not increase in severity.

They also occur earlier in your cycle. If you usually have cramping for a few days before your period starts, it may be hard to distinguish between implantation cramps and menses.

Similarly, any spotting from implantation is much lighter than a typical period. Bleeding from implantation does not contain clots. It may resemble pinkish discharge, or small brown flecks.

Women may only notice a few drops of blood, or none at all. This spotting may only last two days, or even a few hours. If you experience cramping followed by a medium or heavier flow that lasts several days, this is most likely your period.

What Causes Early Pregnancy Cramps

It may feel like period pains, but cramping during early pregnancy is actually your body preparing for your baby to grow. Uterine cramps are often a result of the uterus growing and stretching during pregnancy, explains Halliday.

Other harmless reasons could be a full bladder or bowel, diarrhoea or constipation, ligaments stretching or even dehydration. Women might also experience sensations during or after exercise or sex, she adds.

What Do Period Cramps Actually Feel Like?

Mild cramping at any point during the first three months of pregnancy is usually nothing to worry about, as it can be caused by the significant hormone changes youre experiencing. ‘The body produces higher rates of progesterone during pregnancy, which can have an effect on muscles, ligaments and joints, making them more flexible,’ explains Dr Beckett. ‘This may be felt as the womb expands to accommodate the growing foetus.’

Other causes of cramps include trapped wind and constipation, both of which are common in pregnancy – its such a glamorous time.

If the pain is only mild and goes away after you rest, poo or pass wind, then its probably nothing to fret about, according to the NHS. But if you are worried, you should call your midwife or your GP. Feeling anxious is perfectly understandable and they’ll be able address any concerns you have.

The pain level can vary from child to child, but the pain should be able to be controlled by over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or Aleve, Dr. Dwiggins said. Combining heat and ibuprofen will provide even more relief. Disposable heat patches are thin and easy to wear to school or activities.

Your child should not miss school or activities due to period pain. If their pain cant be managed by these strategies, they should be evaluated.

Other Implantation Signs And Symptoms

Besides cramping, you might also have some light bleeding. It would be light pink or brown rather than red like your period, and it would be very light. The spotting would last only a few days at the most.

If you miss your period, you’ll have another strong indication that what you were feeling was implantation. For best results, take a pregnancy test a few days to a week after you expect your period.

What Does The Pain Feel Like

The severity of pain canât be measured objectively. Women are the best judges of how severe their symptoms are and how much the symptoms are affecting their quality of life. Some women describe their pain as very aggressive and distressing, for example like being stabbed in the ovaries, or stinging, burning, sharpâ¦

There is often no direct link between what doctors find when examining a woman and the severity of her symptoms. For instance, the number and size of her endometrial implants wonât necessarily determine how bad her symptoms are. Small areas of endometriosis tissue can sometimes be very painful too. This doesnât always make sense to the woman, or to her doctors.
