The one exception to this is the birth control shot, known as Depo-Provera, which can affect your fertility for a longer period of time, even after you’ve stopped taking it. “Each shot lasts for three months however, the return to fertility may be an additional 3 to 6 months longer,” Dr. Purdie explains.

It’s important to keep in mind that whenever we talk about fertility returning and getting pregnant after birth control, there are a lot of elements at workit has to do with how intercourse is timed, you and your partner’s reproductive health, as well as some elements of luck. You may have heard it takes at least three months for ovulation to start up again after you stop the pill. This is not usually true. For most people, ovulation will start within weeks. For some, though, it can take one to three months.

Think about it like this: The pill works because it stops ovulation. If you miss a couple of pills, you might ovulate and you might get pregnant. Some healthcare providers even say you are most fertile just after you stop taking the pill.

So where does the three-month myth come from? Your healthcare provider may tell you to use a condom until you have had three periods. This is just because waiting will help you keep track of your cycle. That way, if you get pregnant, it will be easier to guess when the pregnancy happened.

There is no medical reason to wait after you stop birth control before trying to become pregnant. Just be prepared that your fertility may return within the first month.

Hi everyone! I need help. I had my Nexplanon implant removed 9/11/17. It was due on 10/2017 since i had it for the full 3yrs. I never had my period throughout it. Now, I am just wondering how quickly i can get pregnant or how easily. I want a baby now but just want to know what to be prepared for. I just got mine out July 2019 after marrying my husband. I know prior to nexplanon I was extremely fertile but still now 4 months later after removal still only one line on my pregnancy tests. Not sure how long it can take but I am starting to worry nexplanon may have damaged something making it harder to conceive.

My first baby when i had the nexplanon removed only took about a month. I did have the first one in for the whole 3 years to the date. I am now trying for a second baby but it has now been 7 weeks i had my first period 2 weeks ago but still nothing i only had this one in for about a year. It hits everyone differently and i guess each time is diffrent to.

Fertility has been known to be restored in as little as a week and as long as 18 months. It’s just one of those things where there is no definite rule.
