How Long Will It Take To Get Pregnant

Most hormonal birth control methods stop you from ovulating, or releasing an egg. If you do not release an egg, there is nothing for sperm to fertilize. This is why you do not get pregnant.

When you stop using hormonal birth control, you will start ovulating again. When you are ovulating, you are fertile. But a return of fertility does not automatically mean you will get pregnant.

How Soon Can I Get Pregnant After Nexplanon Is Removed

Immediately! The body becomes fertile as soon as Nexplanon is removed. With this said, however, keep in mind that youve had a long-acting form of birth control in your body . It can take up to 3 months for ovulation to return.

Nexplanon has also been working to thin the lining of your uterus, potentially making it more difficult for an embryo to implant immediately after Nexplanon is removed. It thickens back up quickly for most women , but it is best to give it a couple of cycles to recuperate. Dont be discouraged if pregnancy does not happen immediately, and keep in mind that pregnancy immediately of removal could carry a slightly increased risk for miscarriage.

If you have been using Nexplanon or other forms of birth control for many years, also keep in mind that age affects egg quality and chance of pregnancy. Every year after about age 25 your fertility slowly declines, making it ever so slightly more difficult to get pregnant as you age. Be patient with your body. Give it a full year of trying before considering infertility.

How Is The Nexplanon Implant Used

Nexplanon is inserted through a needle into the skin of your upper arm, just inside and above the elbow. After the implant is inserted, your arm will be covered with 2 bandages. Remove the top bandage after 24 hours, but leave the smaller bandage on for 3 to 5 days. Keep the area clean and dry.

The timing of when you receive the Nexplanon implant depends on whether you were using birth control before, and what type it was.

You should be able to feel the implant under your skin. Tell your doctor if you cannot feel the implant at any time while it is in place.

The Nexplanon implant can remain in place for up to 3 years. If the implant is placed correctly, you will not need to use back-up birth control. Follow your doctors instructions.

You may have irregular and unpredictable periods while using Nexplanon. Tell your doctor if your periods are very heavy or long-lasting, or if you miss a period .

If you need major surgery or will be on long-term bed rest, or if you need medical tests, may need to have your Nexplanon implant removed for a short time. Any doctor or surgeon who treats you should know that you have a Nexplanon implant.

Have regular physical exams and mammograms, and self-examine your breasts for lumps on a monthly basis while using this medicine.

Benefits And Side Effects

The implant is super effective and convenient to prevent pregnancy. Nexplanon gives great, long-term protection against pregnancy its more than 99% effective. The implant works as well as sterilization or IUDs. The implant is convenient and private. It makes the periods better by cutting down on period cramps. Also, it makes the period lighter. Implants only have one hormone as compared to many hormonal birth control methods contain two hormones. Nexplanon is reversible as can get pregnant after taking out the implant.

The hormones in the implant may cause side effects for some people but usually go away after a few months. So if you got the implant and have side effects that bother, try to stick it out and give the body a chance to adjust to the hormones. The most common birth control implant side effect is spotting , especially in the first 6-12 months. Sometimes the implant causes long-term spotting or periods can get longer and heavier. But for most people, the implant makes the periods way lighter. And some people even stop getting a period at all while on the implant. Other possible side effects are

  • Headaches
  • Pain or bruising on the arm where the implant was inserted
  • An infection where the implant was inserted

If not fine with the implant, contact the doctor, and try a different birth control methods.

My Nexplanon was removed, and I had sex 2 days later. Could I get pregnant?

My implanon has been expired since February of this year. In the last 2 years my periods had stopped completely on it which I heard can be common but even though it has expired they still have not returned. I had unprotected sex early this month but my partner withdrew long before ejaculating. I took the Ella one pill approx. 30 hours after intercourse as I know I am not protected with an expired implanon. I have been experiencing nausea and heavy abdominal cramps since taking the emergency contraceptive and have lost my appetite. I am still panicking about being pregnant. Iâm unsure about when to take a pregnancy test as my periods have not yet returned at all so I have no way of judging. Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks

Hello there,

In my opinion Iâd say itâs rather doubtful that youâre pregnant. What ypu could be experiencing is a hormone imbalance. Your bodyâs hormones have basically been repressed with the implant and now itâs trying to return to normal. Itâll take a while for your hormones to return to normal during which time itâll be much tougher to conceive.

Youâve taken all the necessary precautions anyway so itâs highly doubtful even if your body has returned back to normal.

But your body is probably just trying to compensate for the lack of hormone release over the amount of time the implant has been in. So youâll be a bit out of balance for a few months. You may be able to read up more about it on the NHS website.

Hope this helps!

How Does Nexplanon Work

Nexplanon contains etonogestrel. Etonogestrel is the synthetic form of naturally occurring female hormone, progesterone. Nexplanon releases etonogestrel into the blood stream of the implant. The main way in which Nexplanon prevents pregnancy is that it releases high amount of synthetic progesterone, tricking the body into believing that ovulation has already occurred and prevents the eggs from being formed in the ovary. Etonogestrel also effects the natural mucus at the cervix. This increases the thickness of the mucus making it difficult for the sperm to enter the womb and hence successful fertilization.

Can You Get Pregnant On The Implant

When Nexplanon is inserted correctly the chances of getting pregnant are very few which is around 1 out of every 100 which is just 1 percent. There are still some unanswered questions about how effective Nexplanon is on overweight women as not many studies have been done including overweight women. The chances of getting pregnant on Nexplanon are very rare but it is technically possible. But you should know that the side effects just after the implantation of Nexplanon can mimic the symptoms of pregnancy as the body is not usually used to the hormones at that time.

How To Prepare For The Procedure

The health care provider evaluates the womans overall health before inserting the implant. They will determine the correct timing for insertion based on previous birth control and menstrual cycle.

A woman may need to take a pregnancy test and be on a non-hormonal backup contraceptive for a week. A backup is not required if the woman previously:

  • Did not use any contraception and had the contraceptive implant put into her body in the first five days of the menstrual cycle, even when they were bleeding.
  • Used a mini-pill and had the implant inserted while she was on the pill.
  • Had used a combination of contraceptives like a vaginal ring, birth control patch, birth control pills.
  • Also, if she had the implant inserted within seven days of the beginning of the hormone-free period.
  • Took a contraceptive injection and then had the implant added when the next injection was due.
  • Previously used an IUD or another contraceptive and then had the Nexplanon inserted after the removal of an old device .

Before the insertion, the woman may need to sign a consent form.

The Nexplanon Arm Implant

The implant contains the progestin hormone called etonogestrel. Etonogestrel is a hormone that is similar to a natural hormone made in your body. The implant releases enough hormone into your body each day to prevent pregnancy.

What happens:

  • To avoid infection, proper sterile methods must be used during the insertion of the implant, such as the use of hand hygiene, sterile gloves, and correct skin disinfection.
  • A trained doctor or nurse will give local anesthetics, which will numb the part of your arm where the implant will be inserted.
  • The doctor may mark the insertion point at 8-10 cm above the elbow of your inner side of the upper arm and another point around 4 cm above as a direction guide.
  • It only takes a few minutes to put in, feels similar to having an injection, and you do not need any stitches.
  • After implantation, you may get bruising at the implant site, which is normal.

Myth: Getting An Implant Is Painful And Could Cause Infection

Some women who seek family planning believe that the insertion of implants requires surgery or that insertion is painful and causes infection. They may also have misconceptions about the removal of implants.

Fact: No stitches, no noticeable scar, and it can be removed at any time

Health professionals with specific training perform a minor surgical procedure to insert implants. The provider gives the patient an injection of local anesthetic under the skin of her arm to prevent pain while the implants are inserted. This injection may sting. The woman remains fully awake during the procedure. Insertion takes an average of 4 to 5 minutes for Norplant, 2.5 minutes for Jadelle, and 1.5 minutes for Implanon. Insertion can take more or less time, depending on the skill of the provider.

The incision is small and stitches are not required. In most cases, insertion does not leave a noticeable scar. Once inserted, the outline of the implants underneath the skin can be felt and sometimes seen. The woman may have bruising and feel pain or soreness for a few days afterward.

Infection at the insertion site can occur, but is uncommon. When infection occurs, it is usually within the first two months after insertion. In rare cases, implants may start to come out of the skin. When this occurs, it is usually due to improper insertion or infection.
