Can You Get Pregnant With An Iud

Yes, You can pregnant with an IUD. It is possible to pregnant with an IUD. You can get pregnant while using an IUD, but the chances are very small. Less than 1% of women with copper or hormonal IUDs become pregnant each year.

An IUD must remain in your uterus to prevent pregnancy. But sometimes it can move out of place and slip into your cervix, which is the bottom of your uterus. If this happens, you are more likely to become pregnant.

If you become pregnant while using an IUD, your health and that of your baby may be at risk. Tell your doctor if you think your IUD has failed so they can keep you safe.

Types of Pregnancy With an IUDIf your IUD fails, your doctor will find out what type of pregnancy you have:

Intrauterine pregnancy: This is a normal pregnancy in your uterus where your baby will grow for 9 months.Ectopic pregnancy: The embryo tries to grow outside your uterus.

This usually happens in your fallopian tubes, which carry eggs to your ovaries and then to your uterus.

You can also get an ectopic pregnancy in your ovaries, abdomen or cervix. The pregnancy may not progress normally in one of these areas.

The doctor will terminate the ectopic pregnancy to save you from possible bleeding that could put your life at risk.

Because the IUD prevents pregnancy in your uterus, you are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy than a regular pregnancy.

But that doesnt mean youre at higher risk for ectopic pregnancies in general just because you have an IUD.

How Soon Can You Get Pregnant After Iud Removal

One of the advantages of using an IUD is how quickly you can conceive after removal. In general, the ability to get pregnant will immediately go back to whatever is normal for you.

Since the IUD is local on the uterus, hormone production isnt generally affected. You can attempt pregnancy the first month after IUD removal, says Jessica Scotchie, MD, board certified OB-GYN and co-founder of Tennessee Reproductive Medicine.

That said, the average amount of time it takes depends on your age and other medical and gynecologic issues. Here, Scotchie shares some general guidelines, timelines, and odds of getting pregnant at various ages:

  • Under the age of 35, theres a 20 percent chance each month of conceiving, with 60 percent conceiving by 6 months, and 85 to 90 percent conceiving by 1 year.
  • If youre over 35 years old, the odds of conceiving drops to about 10 to 15 percent chance per month.
  • If youre over 40 years old, the chance of conceiving decreases further, to about 5 percent chance each month.

How Do Iuds Work

Both copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs prevent pregnancy by changing the way sperm cells move so they canât get to an egg. If sperm cant make it to an egg, pregnancy cant happen.

The Paragard IUD uses copper to prevent pregnancy. Sperm doesnt like copper, so the Paragard IUD makes it almost impossible for sperm to get to that egg.

The hormones in the Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla IUDs prevent pregnancy in two ways: 1) they thicken the mucus that lives on the cervix, which blocks and traps the sperm, and 2) the hormones also sometimes stop eggs from leaving your ovaries , which means theres no egg for a sperm to fertilize. No egg, no pregnancy.

One of the awesome things about IUDs is that they last for years but theyre not permanent. If you decide to get pregnant or you just dont want to have your IUD anymore, your nurse or doctor can quickly and easily take it out. Youre able to get pregnant right after the IUD is removed.

There is no age requirement for an IUD. People of varying ages have IUDs placed to prevent pregnancy and in some cases control abnormal bleeding. Once an IUD is placed, you will be given a card and information about when it needs to be removed. As with all forms of contraception, there are some risks.

Certain risk factors, such as a higher risk of STIs, risk of perforation, and slightly increased risk of ectopic pregnancy are important to consider when deciding if an IUD is right for you. While incredibly low, the risks are always important to consider. If you have questions about whether an IUD is right for you, chat with your primary care provider about your situation.

Can You Get Pregnant When On Mirena

Statistics show that less than one woman among every 100 using IUD is likely to get pregnant within the first year of usage. In rare cases, you may get pregnant with Mirena for the following reasons:

  • Keeping the Mirena past its removal time or manufacturers approved timeline. According to a medical review, Mirena was found to be effective until seven years in women who are 25 years old at the time of insertion, and who had children . Later, the FDA revised its recommended timeline to five years.
  • If the device is not inserted in the right place. If the Mirena translocates from the upper to the lower segment of the uterus, it does not work. In some cases, IUD might perforate the uterus, which may increase the probability of conception. For these reasons, you should get your Mirena device checked once every month if it is placed correctly and without any complications .
  • If the body expels the device out of the uterus. There may be chances for the Mirena to fall off and you may get pregnant. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists statistics, expulsion rates of IUD range from 2% to 10%, which may mostly occur soon after inserting the device .

Everyones body is different. They usually tell you it can take up to 6 months but I got pregnant after 2 months after my Nexplanon was taken out. So it can happen quickly! However, if 6 months to a year passes then I would speak to your GYN about any concerns. Best thing though is talk to your doctor when you go to have it removed.
