How The Test Is Performed

To have the procedure:

  • You will lie on your back on an exam table.
  • The person performing the test will spread a clear, water-based gel on your belly and pelvis area. A handheld probe will then be moved over the area. The gel helps the probe transmit sound waves.
  • These waves bounce off the body structures, including the developing baby, to create a picture on the ultrasound machine.

In some cases, a pregnancy ultrasound may be done by placing the probe into the vagina. This is more likely in early pregnancy, Many women will have the length of their cervix measured by vaginal ultrasonography around 20 to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

What Happens During A Prenatal Ultrasound

To prepare for a prenatal ultrasound, you might be asked to drink lots of fluids or not pee for a while so that your bladder will be full for the exam.

You’ll change into a cloth gown and lie on a table. The room is usually dark so the images can be seen clearly on the computer screen. A technician trained in ultrasound imaging will spread a clear gel on your abdomen. This gel helps with the transmission of the sound waves.

The technician will move a small wand over the gel. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves and a computer measures how the sound waves bounce back from the body. The computer changes those sound waves into images. Sometimes a doctor will come in at the end of the test to meet with you and take a few more pictures.

The prenatal ultrasound is painless. You may feel a slight pressure on the belly as the transducer is moved over the body, and the gel may feel wet or cold. The test usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Sometimes an ultrasound test can be done through the vagina early in the pregnancy when the uterus and ovaries are better seen from that angle.

Some ultrasounds can show the fetus in three dimensions, like a photograph , and sometimes show movement . Doctors might use these to look for birth defects.

Why To Avoid Keepsake 3

A quick Google search reveals that nearly a dozen businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area offer 3-D and 4-D keepsake ultrasound services.

More expecting parents than ever are paying to get photos and videos of their babies that are more lifelike than the 2-D ultrasounds from their doctors offices. This is despite the fact that the Food and Drug Administration warns parents to avoid them. Medical groups such as the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also discourage the use of commercial ultrasounds.

I know youre excited to see your baby. Booking a photo op can be tempting. But its important to remember that an ultrasound is not just for entertainment. Its an important medical test. Lets talk about why and when doctors use them, and Ill share my concerns about having a 3-D or 4-D ultrasound in a non-medical setting.

Why Are Ultrasounds So Expensive

There are a lot of reasons why its so expensive to see the doctor or stay in a hospital for any amount of time, including administrative costs, multiple treatments, drug costs, and the cost of equipment. Among that high-priced equipment is the ultrasound machines that doctors use to diagnose patients.

Obstetric Ultrasound Cpt Code

What can be seen on ultrasound in early pregnancy?

In healthcare, we represent almost every little service with a five digit code.

The CPT code that represents this first ultrasound is 76801. It is an abdominal ultrasound of a uterus that has been pregnant for less than 14 weeks. There is both a fetal and maternal evaluation done during this service. The radiologist reviews the images of the fetus, pregnant uterus, and maternal pelvic structures and provides a written interpretation of the images back to the OBGYN and midwife.

The consumer-friendly description of this service is an abdominal ultrasound of a pregnant uterus.

If the mother happens to have a second routine ultrasound done in the first trimester, 76801 is used as well. As you might expect, she will be charged again for the service.

I should mention, a separate ultrasound where they measure some fluid near the fetal neck is also often ordered at some point, but we will learn more about that in another post.

What Is Ultrasound Therapy

You may have heard of ultrasound therapy . With similar terminology, it can get confusing, but UT is different than a diagnostic ultrasound. The prices will differ from what we discuss in this article.

Physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers use UT to treat deep tissue injuries with the goal of restoring range of motion to joints and speed up healing. Unlike a diagnostic ultrasound, UT uses ultrasound waves to administer deep heat to tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. Similar ultrasound technology is also useful for treating kidney stones.

Qualifications Of The Person Performing The Ultrasound

If you get a 3-D or 4-D keepsake ultrasound outside of a medical setting, the person performing the ultrasound is focused on getting a good photo and video for you, not assessing the health of your baby. They may not have the same rigorous training that a certified ultrasound facility requires of its sonographers.

If they see something they are uncomfortable with, they may not be prepared to provide you with information, support, or follow-up. In those cases, you may need to go to your doctor for another ultrasound. This can result in unnecessary anxiety and concern.

Commercial ultrasounds also may result in false reassurance. Some women interpret a pleasing photo as evidence of healthy development. If the person assessing the ultrasound isnt a trained medical professional, they may not have the skills to notice that something isnt right with the baby or other structures like placenta and umbilical cord.

Why Is A Pregnancy Ultrasound Important

Expecting? How much does an ultrasound cost?

A pregnancy ultrasound is a prenatal test offered to pregnant women. It uses soundwaves to show you your baby in the womb and track your babys growth and development.

Ultrasounds are one of the very exciting parts of pregnancy! Your doctor will probably use a fetal doppler during your prenatal visits to listen to the babys heartbeat but getting to see your babys face, arms and legs in the womb during an ultrasound is pretty incredible.

Pregnancy ultrasounds always make pregnancy feel even more real to me too, especially in the early stages of pregnancy when you arent physically showing yet.

Some common reasons for having an ultrasound include:

  • To confirm youre pregnant
  • To confirm how many babies are in your uterus
  • To check your babys growth and predict the due date
  • To examine your ovaries and uterus
  • To check your babys heartbeat, muscle tone, movement and overall development
  • To screen for birth defects
  • To help with prenatal tests like chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis
  • To check for any pregnancy complications
  • To make sure your baby is in the correct position for birth

How Much Of The Ultrasound Will My Insurance Cover

Your insurance may cover all or part of the total costs of your ultrasound, depending on multiple factors. For example, if you have an HMO insurance plan and have met your deductible, your plan may cover 100% of the cost. If you have a 20% coinsurance, you will have to pay 20% out of pocket, and the insurance will cover the rest. If you are covered for pregnancy, your ultrasound will be free.

The amount of money you have to pay out of pocket for your ultrasound and the amount your insurance provider will cover depends on multiple factors such as your premium, deductible, and type of insurance plan. Lets quickly go over some of these concepts:

  • Look to see if your baby is developing normally or if there are any major physical concerns

What Kinds Of Ultrasounds Are Available

Various types of ultrasounds are available to provide your doctor with information regarding your baby, your pregnancy, and you. The two most common types of ultrasounds performed during pregnancy are:

  • Transabdominal ultrasound This is what people often envision when they think of pregnancy ultrasounds. During this procedure, an ultrasound wand is rubbed over the skin of the abdomen to produce images of the fetus and the inside of the womb.
  • Transvaginal ultrasound During a transvaginal ultrasound, an ultrasound wand is inserted about 2 to 3 inches into the vaginal canal. This procedure is often performed during early pregnancy ultrasounds to:
  • Confirm pregnancy
  • Examine the cervix and placenta
  • Identify abnormal bleeding

Transvaginal ultrasounds are typically performed early in pregnancy because during this time, the uterus and fallopian tubes are still situated close to the birth canal, deep inside the pelvis. This makes them harder to detect and examine with a transabdominal ultrasound. In fact, one study of 120 women found that transvaginal ultrasounds produced a significantly clearer ultrasound image in 63% of first trimester ultrasounds.

As your pregnancy progresses, your uterus will grow up and out, expanding until it no longer fits inside your pelvis. By the middle of your second trimester, your uterus will rest between your belly button and your breasts, making it easier to examine with a transabdominal ultrasound.

What Is An Anatomic Ultrasound

This ultrasound is usually offered in the second trimester, between 18 and 22 weeks of gestation. As the name suggests, this type of ultrasound looks at your babys anatomy. The number of fetuses, gestational age, and location of the placenta will be assessed. The ultrasonographer will take many measurements of your baby to screen for any abnormalities. Images will be captured to view the development of your babys brain, face, heart, spine, chest, major organs, feet, and hands. The position of your placenta and the vessels in the umbilical cord will be examined. The amount of fluid around the baby will be measured, and your cervix, uterus, ovaries, and bladder will be assessed for any abnormalities. If you are at high risk for fetal abnormalities, anatomic ultrasound can be performed during early pregnancy . If the babys sex is determined during the ultrasound, you have the right to request this information.

What Is An Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to createimages of the inside of your body. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to see your baby inside the womb. With this internal sneak peek, your doctor can monitor your babys health and development, as well as your own health and wellbeing.

How Much Does An Ultrasound Cost

Travis & Danielle: 13 week ultrasound

Healthcare Bluebook, a fair pricing resource for medical procedures, says a reasonable cost for a fetal ultrasound is about $200, with the number dropping below that in some states. However, the price can vary a lot depending on where you live and where you seek care. For example, healthcare price comparison site New Choice Health reports the average cost of a fetal ultrasound only costs $134 in Tampa, Floridawhile the average in Baltimore, Maryland is $648.

Ultimately, ultrasounds can range anywhere from $200 to $800 or more, and can easily cost over $1,000 if you go to an out-of-network provider. Typically, large hospitals with higher administrative costs charge more for ultrasounds than a doctor’s office or a stand-alone clinic.
