Can I Donate Eggs While Pregnant

There Are Three Main Ways Of Donating Your Eggs: Through An Agency Through A Clinic That Runs A Donor Service Or Doing A Directed Egg Donation

What to Expect When Using Donor Eggs

Agencies are basically headhunters and can pay more depending on the specifics of a donor. Compensation varies but Dr. Devine says, Appropriate compensation for eggs donors should be based on the local cost of living and should cover her lost wages, mileage, parking, and other expenses. For example, she explained that in the Washington DC area, compensation for donors ranges from $6,000 $8,000. Going through an agency, however, you can earn up to $25,000 for donation. You can also seek out an agency or clinic with a donor service on your own, without being headhunted by them. Theres also directed egg donation, which could be a donor donating eggs directly to a family member or friend, but without the process of the agency or clinic doing the matchmaking for them. Levine also adds that some families who have specific criteria, like wanting a donor who goes to Harvard, might put an ad in the Harvard newspaper and pay anywhere from $25,000-$50,000 for that directed donation.

Who Should Consider Using An Egg Donor

Egg donation is used for a person who wishes to have a child but cannot get pregnant with their own eggs. This may be because they were born without ovaries, is in menopause, did not respond adequately to hormonal stimulation of their ovaries in the past, or has had poor egg or embryo quality with previous IVF attempts. People may also choose to use a donor if they have a genetic disease that they do not want to pass on to their children. Male couples or single males who wish to have a child may also use donated eggs.

What About Sex After Egg Retrieval

After egg retrieval, you may experience some pain and discomfort. So avoid undertaking any tasks for a day or two after the procedure. This means no exercising, driving, and any other tasks your physical and mental ability.

When it comes to sexual intercourse, most egg donors are advised to avoid having sex for 72 hours following the procedure. If you have sex before the 72 hours are over, chances are you may experience more pain and discomfort.

Egg Donation Wipes Out Your Egg Supply

Myth: People often think that by donating eggs, a donor would be giving up eggs that she would have otherwise been able to use in the future to get pregnant after donating eggs.

Fact: On average, at puberty, a woman will have an ovarian reserve of approximately 300,000 eggs. Of which, only about 300 to 400 will ever mature and be released during her lifetime. The remainder of the eggs will die and never be used. During a controlled stimulation for an egg donation cycle, some of those eggs that would normally die will be recruited to mature instead.

Out of an abundance of caution to maximize the safety of our donors, we limit the number of times a donor can donate in her lifetime to six times. This is in compliance with ASRM, the governing body of reproductive medicine.

Will Donating My Eggs Affect My Future Fertility?

Do birth mothers using donor eggs have a significant impact on the development and future health of their babies? The resounding answer is yes. Because the babys DNA will only come from the egg donor and the sperm provider, many women using egg donation worry that they will not share any genetic information with their child. However, abundant research has shown us that the prenatal uterine environment plays a crucial role in fetal brain development, childhood metabolism , immune health, and numerous other factors. Read on to learn about the vital role your body will play in your future childs development.

To Donate Eggs You Need To Undergo A Series Of Psychological And Physical Screenings

Psychologically, doctors want to make sure youre of sound mind and comfortable going through the donation process. There are also several physical screenings to undergo. According to FDA regulations, you can be disqualified if youve gotten tattoo or piercing where sterile procedures were not used in the last 12 months. Doctors may also check your travel history to make sure you havent been to a Zika-affected country in the past six months. Levine says young women will often come in wishing to donate their eggs, only to realize theyre ineligible because they recently traveled to Mexico for Spring Break. In the physical exam, theyll also check your blood work and do an ultrasound to see how many eggs you have, and the likelihood of getting a good outcome. Dr. Devine explains that the screening process for an egg donor is usually mutually beneficial. This may serve that egg donor very well, whether or not shes ultimately accepted to donate her eggs, because she gets information on her own fertility and reproduction that she otherwise might not have.

What Are The Benefits Of Eating Eggs During Pregnancy

Eggs are nutrient-rich foods good for both the mother and the developing baby. The benefits of including them in your diet are mentioned next:

  • Rich protein sources: Protein is essential for the healthy development of the baby as every fetal cell is made of protein. Eating eggs in sufficient quantity can be helpful for the growing fetus .Eggs are a complete source of protein, since they contain all nine essential amino acids, which the body cannot synthesize.
  • Rich sources of vitamins B 2, B 6, B12, vitamin D, and minerals such as selenium,zinc,iron and copper.
  • Fetal brain development: Eggs contain good levels of choline that is good for the growth and development of the fetal brain. It will, therefore, protect the baby from neural tube defects .
  • Provides calories: You will require about 200 to 300 extra calories in a day during pregnancy . An average-sized egg gives around 70 calories, thus helping meet the calorie requirement of both the mother and the baby .
  • Regulates cholesterol: Eating eggs regularly will balance the cholesterol levels in the body . You should talk to your doctor about your diet if you have cholesterol issue.

Psychological Stress And The Health Of Your Baby

After Donating Eggs, Woman Can’t Get Pregnant

While you probably wont endure conditions as stressful as the Dutch Hunger Winter during your pregnancy, the stressors in your daily life can still have an impact on your baby. While physical stressors obviously impact maternal health, new evidence has shown us that maternal psychological stress during pregnancy can increase the risk of adverse physical and mental outcomes for the baby.

Psychological stress causes a womans cortisol levels to rise. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, can cross through the placenta and affect fetal brain development. Research has shown a link between elevated maternal cortisol levels and changes in childhood brain anatomy and cognitive performance. Psychological stress can also cause a maternal inflammatory response, which can lead to inflammatory molecules passing to your baby through the placenta as well. These inflammatory molecules can affect the nerve connections in the fetal brain, which can cause delayed cognitive development and contribute to emotional and behavioral problems as the child grows.

Future Fertility: If I Donate My Eggs Can I Still Have Kids

Helping a family by donating eggs might get you thinking about the day when you start to create your own family. Chances are you dont want a baby yourself right now, but someday you probably want to be a mom. Women who are thinking about donating sometimes worry that being so generous now could affect their own ability to have kids later. Heres the short answer: it wont. Whew!

Research has never shown any evidence that egg donation affects future fertility, and a recent small study in Belgium which followed up with egg donors after their donation found that out of 60 women, 54 got pregnant within a year once they started trying, and three more got pregnant within 18 months, all without needing any help. The final three women all got pregnant too, after fertility treatment, but two of those needed treatments because of fertility problems with the male partner. Still worried? Here are some answers the most common questions we get about this topic.

Why Am I Required To Live Within Two Hours Of The Monitoring Sites

During the course of an egg donation cycle, you will be required to visit the monitoring site for approximately 6-8 appointments so we can monitor you and your progress. These appointments will take approximately 30 minutes. Because of the frequency of these visits, we require donors to live within 2 hours of a location.

The Actual Process Of Egg Donation Takes Two Weeks However The Screening Process Can Take Six Weeks

At Shady Grove, the process starts off with an online application that involves demographic info, health history including BMI, family history, all the FDA questions about travel. Then, if the potential donor is accepted, the clinic will bring her in and check her ovarian function using hormones and a transvaginal ultrasound. After that, theres a five-hour, comprehensive medical visit where a nurse practitioner will go through the patients history, explain the consent process and risks, infectious disease blood work, genetic testing, do a urine drug test, teach the patient how to do injections at home, and do a psychological test. After that, theres a face-to-face session with a mental health provider , and after that, youre left with the 3-4% of candidates who enter into the egg donation program. Donors then inject themselves with a series of hormones to trigger ovarian stimulation and ovulation.

Then, the actual egg retrieval process takes only 20 minutes , and takes place in their ambulatory surgery center. They use IV sedation . You may feel crampy the day after, and most women choose to take 12 narcotic painkillers the day of the egg retrieval, possibly one more the next day, and then ibuprofen if anything, the day after.

After a week, the clinic will call you back, see you for an ultrasound, and touch base about the process, and theyll either invite you back or not. Purcell says 80% of donors at Shady Grove are invited back to donate again.

What If I Don’t Have Medical Information On Both Sides Of My Family

7 Questions About Using Donor Eggs For Pregnancy

We understand that it can be challenging to obtain information on your parents and grandparents on both sides of your family, especially if you are adopted, donor-conceived, or were raised by a single parent. However, this information is necessary since we need a comprehensive understanding of genetic dispositions you and any subsequent donor-conceived children may have. If you cannot supply this information, unfortunately you will not be able to move forward into our program. Find tips on obtaining your medical history here.

Does An Egg Donor Have To Be Anonymous

Not always. If you have a friend or family member who is willing to become a donor for you and your partner, this is also an acceptable option. You may choose this option if you want to use a donor whom you know well, who looks like you, or who you want your child to have a relationship with in future.

However, its also important to consider the challenges of using a known donor. It is advisable to go through group counselling to ensure that all parties are aware of the implications before the egg donation process begins.

Known egg donors will usually have to go through the same criteria checks as an anonymous donor, and the process of egg donation will likely be the same.

The Importance Of The Prenatal Window

There are several sensitive times during human development. The preconception period and post-natal period play an important role in your babys health. However, the most crucial point of time in human development is the time a child spends in the uterus. This period is known as the prenatal window.

Historically, the uterus has been viewed as nothing more than an oven. While weve known for generations that the uterus provides oxygen and nutrients to the baby, we have only recently started exploring just how important the uterine environment is in human development. New research on both humans and animals has shown us that the maternal environment influences brain development, metabolism, immune system function, and more.

From a biological perspective, this makes sense. The prenatal window allows a mother to prepare her baby for the outside world. A healthy uterus will communicate healthy environmental conditions to a baby. Unfortunately, unfavorable environmental conditions can also affect the baby negatively. One well-studied example of this phenomenon proves just how large of a role a mothers living conditions can play in her babys development.

Why Are The Egg Donor Requirements So Strict

We receive thousands of applicants every month, and less than 1% of applicants are accepted into the program. The screening process is very rigorous as we want to make sure our donors are healthy and ready to donate. Our goal is to give our recipients, who have undergone many infertility challenges, the best possible chance of conceiving a healthy baby with the help of our egg donors.

Why Does Education Matter

Conceiving with egg donation | Infertility TV

Many egg donor recipients hold a minimum of a college degree and highly value education. More often than not, they are looking for a donor whose background and education is similar.

Each donor is on her own journey. Many begin college immediately after high school or complete certifications that help them on their next step.

For that reason we require that our donors hold a high school diploma as a minimum. We understand this may not seem fair to those without a high school diploma.

  • The donated eggs are combined with either the male partners sperm or donated sperm to create an embryo through the IVF process, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the recipient mothers womb.

What Are The Risks Involved

As with any medical procedure, there are risks involved but they are rare. Rest assured, we thoroughly counsel all donors on the potential risks before they choose to donate, so that they can make an informed decision on moving forward. In addition, as one of the biggest and most experienced egg banks in the world, we possess the expertise to monitor and cycle donors carefully to mitigate the risk of complications occurring.

Pregnancy: It is possible that not all of the eggs will be retrieved and therefore, donors are at a high risk for pregnancy for a period of time after the egg retrieval. We ask that donors practice abstinence during this time. Donors should always use protection if having intercourse at any time during participation.

Infection: The risk of infection from egg retrieval is less than 1%. To lower the risk of possible infection even further, donors will be instructed to take an antibiotic for several days following the retrieval.

Ovarian Torsion: Very rarely the ovary can twist on itself causing a sudden onset of severe pain on one or both sides. The risk of ovarian torsion is just .3%. For a period of time, donors are asked to discontinue activities such as running, moderate to high impact aerobic activity, horseback riding and strenuous lifting to further decrease this risk.
