  • Do not stop your asthma medication unless advised by your doctor.
  • Know the asthma warning signs to watch for.
  • Avoid situations that trigger asthma attacks.
  • Get the flu, whooping cough and COVID-19 vaccinations to protect yourself and your unborn child.
  • Create an asthma management action plan with your doctor or nurse.
  • Talk To Your Doctor About Related Chronic Conditions

Acid reflux is more common in pregnancy whether you have asthma or not. Meanwhile, nasal congestion is also more common during pregnancy, which may exacerbate preexisting chronic sinusitis. This inflammation of the nasal cavities tends to be more common in people with asthma.

If you suffer from either condition, be sure to ask your doctor for a treatment plan. Both can interfere with the management of your asthma.

Does Nursing Or Pumping Induce Labor

Possibly. A 2005 study found that 37.8% of 719 full-term, pregnant women who were randomly directed to stimulate their nipples went into labor over the following three days, as compared to 6.4% of the women who were not.

Therefore, nipple stimulation may have some impact on inducing labor in full-term pregnant women.

    What Causes Asthma Symptoms

One or more things can trigger your asthma. Some of the most common things that bring on asthma symptoms are:

AllergensAbout 7 out of 10 people with asthma have allergies. An allergy is a reaction to something you touch, eat or breathe in that makes you sneeze, get a rash or have trouble breathing.

Allergens are things that cause you to have allergy symptoms. Many also cause asthma symptoms. Common allergens are pollens, molds, animal dander , dust mites and cockroaches. Limit your contact with allergens. If you still have asthma symptoms, talk to your health care provider.Your provider may recommend that you take an allergy medicine. If youre already getting allergy shots, you can keep taking them during pregnancy. But if you arent getting allergy shots, dont start taking them when youre pregnant because you could have a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

IrritantsIrritants are things in your environment that may hurt your lungs and trigger asthma symptoms, including air pollution, cigarette smoke and smoke from wood-burning stoves or fireplaces, cold air and strong smells, like paint or perfumes.

InfectionsInfections like a cold, the flu or viral pneumonia, can trigger asthma symptoms in some people.

ExerciseExercise can cause asthma symptoms in some people. If your asthma is under control, you probably can exercise without any problems. But if exercising during pregnancy sets off your asthma, talk to your health care provider.

Are There Any Pregnancy Complications Associated With Omeprazole Use

    Athletic with Asthma

A recent analysis of data from FDA Adverse Event Reporting System has shown a relationship between omeprazole use and the risk of cholestasis in pregnant women. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is a common liver disorder where bile flow from the liver is obstructed. Typical symptoms include intense itching, dark urine, and abnormal liver function tests. However, extensive research is required to conclude any definite connection between omeprazole and ICP. Women with existing or chronic liver problems should be extra cautious before taking omeprazole.

Which Medications Should Not Be Used During Pregnancy

    • Antihistamines and decongestants: These medications are used to relieve stuffy, runny, or itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and other minor allergy symptoms. Although some decongestants might carry a small risk of birth defects when used early in pregnancy, their safety in pregnancy has not been fully studied.
    • Epinephrine and other related medications: If possible, avoid regular use of epinephrine and other related medication as they may pose a higher risk to the fetus. Epinephrine may be given as an injection to treat a severe asthma attack or a life-threatening allergic response. If this situation occurs, treating your reaction effectively and quickly is important to decrease the risk of oxygen deprivation to the fetus.
    • Aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs : These medications are used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, inflammation, and fever. They are not recommended during late-term pregnancy.
    • Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease are common in pregnancy. They can often be treated without medications by elevating the head of the bed, avoiding overeating, avoiding food triggers, and not eating within two to three hours before bedtime. If medications are needed to control heartburn and GERD, avoid regular use of antacids that contain bicarbonate and magnesium.

Using Brown Asthma Inhaler When Pregnant 11

    Brodicea · 28/09/2013 16:06

I have to confess that I have been very remiss about taking my brown inhaler since getting pregnant – I’ve been vaguely, superstitiously worried that it might cause problems, but totally forgot to ask advice from the midwife. I had gone a few years taking it very rarely but over the last year it had worsened so the Dr told me to start taking it properly. Now since I’ve stopped again, I’ve been feeling worse so last night I took it. And then I googled:NHS website say it’s ‘not recommended’ so I freaked out. Another study listed on the NHS website said that there was a small increased risk of hormonal problems in the baby. Then on the Asthma UK it says you should definitely carry on taking it, and stopping may mean damaging your lungs and starving baby of enough oxygen. Is anyone out there taking their brown inhaler while pregnant? Have any of you asked the Dr?

Safety Of Icss And Pregnancy Outcomes

Currently, budesonide is the ICS most studied during pregnancy. Data from the Swedish birth and health registries reported no significant increase in congenital malformations in more than 10 000 exposed infants.14 As well, no adverse outcomes were found in terms of gestational age, birth weight, birth length, or stillbirths.15 No significant associations have been found between the use of other ICSs during pregnancy and adverse perinatal outcomes.1,16 Meta-analyses did not find associations between use of ICSs, as a group, and increased risk of major malformations 16 or any congenital malformations ,10 when compared with outcomes for women with asthma not using ICSs. Further, active management of asthma was found to decrease the odds of preterm delivery.6

Oral corticosteroids have been associated with an increased risk of oral clefts, particularly cleft palate.18 However, a case-control study examining the association between corticosteroids and oral clefts in the offspring of women using ICSs during pregnancy, including nasal sprays, did not report an increased risk of these birth defects.19 Further, a large Danish study compared outcomes for women who used ICSs in early pregnancy with those not exposed , and the results did not identify an increased risk of oral clefts .20

    Is Omeprazole Safe In Pregnancy

PUMP in Pregnancy – 3rd Trimester

Omeprazole is usually considered safe for use during pregnancy but should be taken in consultation with your doctor to avoid any adverse effects . The US Food and Drug Administration initially listed omeprazole as a Pregnancy Category C drug .

Studies in animals and multiple cohort studies in pregnant women did not show an increase in the risk of adverse outcomes during pregnancy. However, as sufficient well-controlled studies are not available on the use of omeprazole in pregnant women, the FDA presently recommends that the drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Thus, the medicine should be limited to cases where the benefits outweigh any risk .

Do You Need Any Special Tests If You’re Pregnant And Have Asthma

If your asthma is under control and mild, you may not need any special tests. If your asthma is not well controlled or if your asthma is moderate to severe, your provider may recommend repeated ultrasounds to check to make sure your babys growing normally. Ultrasound uses sound waves and a computer screen to show a picture of your baby inside the womb. Your provider may start these at around 32 weeks of pregnancy.

Your provider also may recommend taking your babys heart rate with a fetal heart monitor. This allows him to check on your babys well-being.

Test results can alert your provider if you or your baby needs special care.

How Is Asthma Treated During Pregnancy

Your health care provider needs to monitor your lungs while you are pregnant so he can adjust your asthma medicines, if needed. Tell your provider if your symptoms improve or get worse. By limiting your contact with allergens and other asthma triggers, you may need to take less medicine to control your symptoms.

    Before Taking This Medicine

You should not use Ventolin if you are allergic to albuterol.

Ventolin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 4 years old.

Albuterol may increase the risk of death or hospitalization in people with asthma, but the risk in people with obstructive airway disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is not known.

To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

    • diabetes or

    • low levels of potassium in your blood.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether albuterol will harm an unborn baby. However, having uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy may increase the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, or eclampsia . The benefit of preventing bronchospasm may outweigh any risks to the baby.

If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry to track the effects of albuterol on the baby.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using Ventolin HFA. Ask your doctor about any risk.

Can You Take Antibiotics During Pregnancy

    Europe

Antibiotics can be a literal lifesaver when they’re used to treat a bacterial infection. If your doctor prescribes you an antibiotic during pregnancy, it’s generally because the infection it’s treating is more dangerous than any potential side effects of taking the drug. If your doctor prescribes you an antibiotic, it will generally be in the penicillin or erythromycin family.

That said, antibiotics can also be overused when they’re not necessary, leading to antibiotic-resistant infections. A few things to remember:

Some research suggests that certain antibiotics may be linked to a higher risk of miscarriage and birth defects. This risk, however, is very low, and the illnesses the pregnant moms were being treated for could have been the cause for the miscarriages rather than the drugs themselves.

Remember that while it’s not wise to take antibiotics when they’re not warranted , they can be essential even lifesaving for your health and your baby’s. If your doctor prescribes antibiotics and you’re concerned, ask about the potential risks and benefits.

    Common Questions About Salbutamol Inhalers

Salbutamol is a type of medicine called a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing the muscles of the airways into the lungs, which makes it easier to breathe.

When you have a puff of your salbutamol inhaler it works almost straight away to make your breathing easier. It carries on working for about 5 hours.

Most people will use salbutamol for many years. Once your breathing is better, it may be possible for you or your child to use salbutamol less often. But it’s important to always have your salbutamol inhaler with you so you can use it as soon as you have breathing problems.

Do not stop using salbutamol unless your doctor tells you to. If you stop using salbutamol your breathing problems could get worse. Even if you only have to use salbutamol occasionally, keep your inhaler with you all the time in case you have a sudden attack.

Salbutamol is a type of medicine called a bronchodilator.

Almost everyone who has asthma or COPD is prescribed a bronchodilator inhaler or “reliever” inhaler to help their breathing.

    There are 2 main bronchodilators:

    • salbutamol
    • terbutaline

Salbutamol and terbutaline work as well as each other. However, the inhalers may look different.

If you have difficulty using a salbutamol inhaler talk to your doctor. Switching to a terbutaline inhaler may be an option for you.

In most cases, you will also be given a “preventer” inhaler to help stop you getting symptoms. Use this every day.

Yes, you can drink alcohol with salbutamol.

Why Would Using A Breast Pump While Pregnant Be Considered Unsafe

When your nipples are stimulated a hormone called oxytocin is released. Oxytocin causes the breast tissue to contract, resulting in your breastmilk letting down. This hormone also stimulates the uterus to contract.

The concern with pumping during pregnancy is that these uterine contractions might trigger pre-term labor.

What Are The Risks Of Pepcid During Pregnancy

There are no risks to the mother or fetus, says G. Thomas Ruiz, MD, OB-GYN lead at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center. Even though Pepcid does cross the placenta, Ruiz says there have been no known ill-effects in babies.

Because of the physiologic changes in pregnancy, Ruiz says there may be increased renal clearance of Pepcid. In plain language, this means you may need to take a higher dose. But check with your doctor.

While its best to avoid unnecessary medications during pregnancy unless specifically recommended by your doctor, Gerber says the available data is reassuring that Pepcid doesnt lead to increase risk in pregnant versus nonpregnant people.

However, before you take Pepcid, Ross says to consult with your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, asthma, COPD, or breathing problems.

Some of the more common side effects of Pepcid include:

    • constipation

Dietary and lifestyle changes can help reduce heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux during pregnancy. Whenever possible, Gerber recommends trying these interventions before starting a medication.

Remedies that may help reduce heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux include the following:

When it comes to OTC medications to try before using Pepcid, Ross says products such as Tums or Maalox help coat the esophagus, which minimizes the burning sensation. Both are safe in pregnancy.

For optimal results, Ross recommends taking these medications 30 minutes before each meal and before bedtime.

Your Asthma Action Plan During Pregnancy

Asthma | Inhaler Spacer | pregnancy

In pregnancy, just as before you were pregnant, you need an action plan for your asthma.

    • Let your healthcare provider know as soon as you know you are pregnant.
    • Together, the two of you should review your current action plan and make changes if necessary.
    • You may find that your symptoms have changed or that your sensitivity to certain triggers is different.
    • Be sure to tell him or her all the medications you are taking, not just your asthma medications.

Can I Breastfeed If I Have Asthma

Breastfeeding is considered safe and beneficial for both you and your baby if you have asthma. Whats more, breastfeeding has been linked to a lower future risk of allergies, which are often associated with asthma.

However, theres no conclusive evidence that breastfeeding itself actually prevents allergies or asthma, so try not to stress if you dont end up nursing.

If you do decide to breastfeed, its essential to follow your doctors treatment plan and continue taking the same asthma drugs you were taking during pregnancy to keep your condition under control. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, since dehydration can trigger asthma attacks.

If you experience new severe shortness of breath at any point in late pregnancy or postpartum, especially when youre lying down, be sure to let your doctor know. Theyll be able to rule out a rare form of heart failure known as peripartum cardiomyopathy . Other common symptoms of PPCM include heart palpitations or swelling in the feet and legs.

    Can Pregnancy Make Asthma Worse

Pregnancy could make your asthma worse. Thereâs no clear answer to this question. Your asthma could also stay the same or improve. In general, if your asthma is severe, chances are it may become a little worse during your pregnancy. On the other hand, if you were pregnant before and your asthma did not get worse, chances are that it will not get worse during the next pregnancy.

Asthma is almost never a reason to not get pregnant. But if you have severe asthma, itâs worth talking to your doctor before you get pregnant.

If your asthma is related to allergies, stay away from allergens. This may mean avoiding animal dander, dust mites, cockroaches, pollen, and indoor mold.

How And When To Use Your Inhaler

Only use your salbutamol inhaler when you need it. This may be when you notice symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest, or when you know that you are going to do an activity that can make you breathless, for example climbing stairs or sport.

You should feel a difference to your breathing within a few minutes.
