However, for some women, nausea tends to go away by the time you enter the second trimester.

Nausea Medicine And Morning Sickness: What’s Safe During Pregnancy

Is it safe to take medicine like promethazine while pregnant? Experts weigh in on the pros and cons of treating morning sickness with prescription drugs.

Anyone who’s ever dealt with morning sickness will tell you: It’s no joke. And now medical experts are shedding a bit more light on the importance of adequately treating pregnancy-induced nausea.

According to Britain’s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, four out of five pregnant women experience morning sickness through pregnancy and, despite its name, this affliction can strike all day, every day. Because of this, the group has rolled out new guidelines stressing the importance of proper treatment for morning sickness.

“Women with persistent nausea can often feel that there is a lack of understanding of their condition,” Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, the lead author of the guidelines, said, according to the BBC. “They may be unable to eat healthily, have to take time off work, and feel a sense of grief or loss for what they perceive to be a normal pregnancy. It is therefore vital that women with this condition are given the right information and support and are made aware of the therapeutic and alternative therapies available to help them cope.”

The type of treatment that is required depends on how ill you become. Possible treatments might include:

  • Preventive measures: These might include a pressure-point wristband similar to those used for motion sickness vitamin B6 and/or ginger.

Maternal And Fetal Outcomes

In pregnancies with uncomplicated nausea and vomiting, there is a decreased risk of miscarriage, as well as lower rates of preterm delivery, fetal death, and growth restriction.14,15 However, infants of women who lost weight early in the pregnancy, particularly in the setting of hyperemesis gravidarum, are at increased risk of growth restriction or low birth weight.16 Women with nausea and vomiting that is refractory to treatment or complicated by weight loss have increased risks of fetal growth restriction and fetal death, as well as preeclampsia and maternal complications associated with vomiting .17,18

Have Breakfast In Bed

Oddly enough, you may feel the most nausea first thing in the morning, even though you havent eaten anything for 6-8 hours. Why is that? That hungry feeling you get first thing in the morning, along with the low blood sugar that goes with it, is your bodys way of saying, Feed me!

But when youre pregnant, both an empty stomach and low blood sugar can make morning sickness worse. And it certainly doesnt get any better when you get up and start moving around.

Want a simple solution for nausea first thing in the morning? Eat breakfast in bed. Yes, you read that correctly. Eat breakfast in bed. We recommend sticking with dry products like toast or cereal.

They might not be your first choice for breakfast, but those foods actually do two things: they provide your body with quick calories that boost blood sugar levels and they absorb some of the acids associated with feeling like you want to throw up.

Crackers Pretzels And Toast

Tips to Naturally Treat First Trimester Nausea

Dry foods such as crackers, pretzels, toast and cereals are often recommended to people experiencing nausea. In fact, one study found that almost 90% of gynecologists recommend soda crackers to women with morning sickness .

Its not clear why people tolerate dry, plain foods when theyre nauseous, and no scientific research on the topic exists.

However, its known that people feel more nauseous on an empty stomach and react poorly to strong-smelling foods .

Thats why its best to avoid preparing and cooking food when youre sick, as the sight and smell of food could trigger nausea.

Crackers, pretzels, toast and cereals are quick meal fixes that require little to no preparation, have no strong odor and may help settle your empty, upset stomach .

Summary

An empty stomach and strong-smelling foods can trigger or worsen nausea. Crackers and other plain, dry foods may help settle your stomach.

Stamp Out Offensive Smells

Thanks to your more sensitive sense of smell, some scents may be suddenly offensive or even sickening. So stay away from smells that trigger nausea, whether its the curry from your favorite takeout place or your formerly favorite perfume.

A few other tactics can help. Try microwaving food, which usually results in fewer odors, and open the windows when you cook. Leave any place that smells so strong its making you ill. And wash your clothes more often with a lightly-scented detergent to get rid of encrusted smells.

Steer clear, too, of foods that you cant stand the sight of. Raw chicken, for example, is a common culprit.

How Long Does Morning Sickness Last

The condition usually begins around the sixth week of pregnancy and lasts until about the fourteenth week, when the second trimester begins. For some lucky pregnant women, it only lasts a few weeks and may be mild. For others, it may begin before the sixth week and last much longer than the second trimester.

Tips To Help Survive Nausea During Pregnancy

Pregnancy Morning Sickness When Does It Start

Positive pink line on pregnancy test? Check. Small flutter on early ultrasound? Check. Nausea and vomiting? Double-check.

Often the constant feeling of nausea, which is accompanied by vomiting, soon overshadows the excitement of early pregnancy. Approximately 50-90 percent of women experience nausea and vomiting in their pregnancy, and 5 percent of women have the same symptoms throughout the entire pregnancy, per The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

“The term ‘morning sickness‘ is misleading nausea can occur any time of the day,” says Emily Linklater, D.O., Mayo Clinic Health System OB/GYN physician. “For most women, the nausea ends sometime in the late stages of the first trimester. Nausea may also be worse or better in one pregnancy versus another.”

Unfortunately, science hasnt proven the exact cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. The elevated pregnancy hormone, BHCG, and elevated estrogen have both been hypothesized as contributing to symptoms.

What can an expectant mother do? Here are some tips for surviving nausea and vomiting:

If over-the-counter options do not improve nausea and vomiting, then its wise to speak with your health care provider about anti-nausea prescription medications. Many prescription medications are safe in pregnancy and can relieve severe symptoms.

What Does Pregnancy Nausea Feel Like

How pregnancy nausea feels varies among women, and can even feel different to the same woman at different times of the day.

Pregnancy nausea or morning sickness can feel like:

  • A general, lingering sense of feeling like you need to vomit, but without the urgency to do so.
  • A sudden, urgent need to vomit.
  • A feeling that youre hungry, but without the ability to stomach anything.
  • Dizziness or weakness.

Some women experience nausea during pregnancy and never actually vomit, while others vomit several times a day. The vomiting can sometimes provide a reprieve from nausea, until it returns.

Pregnancy nausea is often exacerbated by the intense fatigue that is also experienced during the first trimester.

My first pregnancy I felt nauseous in the morning and my second it felt like motion sickness up until the second trimester.

Editor’s Note:

Exhaustion and tiredness can even cause nausea in a person who isnt pregnant. So, the fact that women in their first trimester have a double whammy of both exhaustion and nausea can make them compound one another.

Pregnancy And Nausea: Which Medications Are Safe And Effective To Use

It may come as no surprise that up to 80% of women experience nausea during pregnancy, especially in the early stages. Severe nausea and vomiting is a reason for higher rates of pregnancy termination. So, it follows that the early, effective, and safe treatment of nausea is crucial for both the mothers and the infants health. Because medications are prescribed to manage vomiting and nausea in the first trimester , pregnant women and clinicians often have concerns about the potential effects of anti-nausea or antiemetic drugs.

Malformations at birth are exceptionally rare, so finding the cause and effect of a single drug and resulting abnormality is extremely difficult. A recent study of 1.8 million pregnancies showed a direct correlation between the use of specific anti-nausea medications with a risk of birth abnormalities. Due to these concerns, Health Canada recommends NOT to use ondansetron for managing nausea during pregnancy. Pharmacogenetics, the study of how a persons genetics and medications interact, can check whether commonly used anti-nausea drugs will be effective for an individuals metabolism. Drugs such as dolasetron, ondansetron, palonosetron, and tropisetron can have varied effectiveness from person to person based on genetics. Pharmacogenetics may also help to understand the risks associated with these drugs.

Dietary Supplementation And Over The Counter Medications

Some women experience relief from their nausea and vomiting symptoms from dietary supplements such as ginger and Vitamin B6 . The over-the-counter sleeping aid, Doxylamine , has also been known to help with nausea and vomiting. Ask your care provider first before you start these supplements and over the counter medications.

When All Else Fails

Nausea and vomiting in First Trimester

Most nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can be managed using the above recommendations, but if youre not finding relief, here are some safe over-the-counter medications to consider:

  • For reasons not entirely understood, vitamin B6 supplementation can reduce nausea. Take one 25 mg tablet three times a day, taking caution not to exceed 200 mg a day. Note that prenatal vitamins contain B6, so factor that into your daily allotment.
  • Doxylamine, an antihistamine, is sold under the brand name Unisom as a sleep aid and is safe to take during pregnancy to help reduce vomiting. Take half a tablet in the morning and one whole tablet before bed, but be careful not to take before driving as it can cause drowsiness. Research indicates that vitamin B6 and doxylamine are most effective when taken together, so we recommend a combination of the two for maximum symptom reduction.
  • Benadryl, another antihistamine, is safe for reducing nausea and vomiting. Take one 25 mg tablet orally four times a day. This may also make your sleepy.

Opt For Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a popular folk remedy for nausea. It has a sedative effect that may help you sleep when youre nauseous. It may also ease anxiety.

Chamomile tea bags are available at most grocery stores, natural health stores, and online. Make your own chamomile tea by pouring one cup boiling water over a tablespoon of dried or fresh chamomile flowers. Steep for at least five minutes, and strain.

Sit Up And Avoid Crunching The Stomach

If your mom ever told you not to lie down after eating, she was on to something. When you lie flat, gastric juices may rise and increase feelings of nausea and overall discomfort, especially if you have acid reflux or GERD.

Crunching your stomach may also worsen nausea since it compresses the area and makes you less comfortable in general. When youre nauseous, try reclining with your upper body elevated, and move around as little as possible.

Herbs For First Trimester Nausea And Fatigue

There are multiple Chinese herbal formulas that could help reduce nausea as well. These formulas need to be prescribed by a licensed practitioner. For an easy home remedy you can make Ginger tea with honey. To make ginger tea, boil a small handful of fresh ginger in water for 10 minutes. You can add more water if it is too strong. You can also buy crystallized ginger chews or Ginger peoples ginger chews in the natural candy section of your grocery store or in the bulk section.

Ginger tea is a great home remedy for pregnancy nausea.

For exhaustion, you can supplement with Floradix iron and herbs . Also, napping is a MUST. I remember being shocked by the fatigue during pregnancy there is nothing like it. Even though the fetus is tiny, your body is working really hard. Your blood volume needs to increase significantly already and this is exhausting. Other good sources of iron and B-6 are unsulfered blackstrap molasses in a grain beverage such as Inka or Pero. Rooibas tea is also mineral rich and can offer a warm drink alternative.
