Your Body At Week 5 Of Pregnancy
Its very likely that this is the week when you miss a period and decide to take a pregnancy test. Congratulations! Even though its still very early in your pregnancy, complex hormonal changes mean that you might be experiencing many symptoms already.
For many women, the first trimester is the most uncomfortable one. The hormones that are helping your 5-week embryo grow can also cause many unpleasant symptoms. The good news is that most women report that these symptoms tend to decrease after the first trimester is over.
In Vitro Fertilization With Sex Selection
If youre planning in vitro fertilization , theres an option to choose the sex of your baby in conjunction with this procedure. IVF assists with fertility by combining a mature egg with sperm outside of the body. This creates an embryo, which is then implanted in the womb.
If you choose, you can have the sex of different embryos identified, and then only transfer the embryos of your desired sex.
This might be an option if it is important to you to have a child of a certain sex.
Sex selection in conjunction with IVF is about 99 percent accurate. But, of course, theres the risk of multiple births with IVF if you transfer more than one embryo to the uterus.
Calculate Using A Pregnancy Test With Weeks Indicator
All pregnancy tests are designed to detect the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin in urine, but some pricier tests offer a weeks indicator that promises to tell how far along you are. Unfortunately, these tests are pretty vague, stating only one to two weeks, two to three weeks or three-plus weeks pregnant. In addition, the tests measure from implantation, not from your LMP. A test might say that youre one to two weeks pregnant but youre actually four weeks pregnant, according to standard pregnancy calculations.

When Can I Have A Baby Gender Scan
On the NHS, this scan usually takes place between 18 to 21 weeks into your pregnancy. Most private clinics offer the scan from 16 weeks, while we at The Gynae Centre are able to offer a baby gender scan from 12 weeks.
The reason that a sonographer is unlikely to be able to correctly identify a babys sex before 12 weeks is because, before this time, both male and female genitalia appear identical. How are we able to offer a baby gender scan at 12 weeks? We have some of the UKs finest Consultant Gynaecolgists. Dr Eskander has over 30 years experience in ultrasound gender identification. In fact, were so confident, we offer 99% accuracy or your money back.
Your Body Can Predict Whether Youre Having A Boy Or A Girl
A well-known tale is that carrying your baby low means its a boy, but high means its a girl.
Another myth says that if you develop a linea nigrathat dark line down the middle of your bellyand it runs from your belly button downwards, youre having a girl. But if it runs from your pelvis up to your ribcage, youre having a boy.

What Monitoring May Be Necessary During Your Pregnancy
Electronic fetal monitoring: Sometimes late in pregnancy, a woman who is pregnant may be placed on a fetal monitor to verify the health of the fetus or to see if the woman is in early labor.
Biophysical Profile Test: This is a noninvasive test uses ultrasound to assess whether or not the baby is receiving an adequate supply of oxygen. It is typically performed during high risk pregnancies or if a woman has gone past her due date.
What Determines The Sex Of A Baby
Ready to get a quick biology lesson? Its all about the chromosomes, baby! Leondires explains: Chromosome complement is what determines the sex of a baby. Most people have 46 chromosomes. People who are born with ovaries have two X chromosomes , and people who are born with testes have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome . An egg has one X chromosome, so its the complementary sperm thatll either contribute an X or Y chromosome. So if youre wondering which parent determines the sex of baby, the answer is dad.

/16 Speed Of The Babys Heart Beat
The theory behind using the fetal heart rate as a way to predict the gender of your baby states that if the heart rate is above 140 beats per minute then you are likely to have a girl, according to TODAY. If it’s under 140BPM then you’re considered to be having a boy. This prediction method is harmless to try and also quite easy. At your next ante-natal appointment, simply count the number of beats or ask your midwife or doctor how many beats per minute they can hear.
There is no existing evidence that proves this method works, however, and I, for one, am a little dubious. Before my first baby was born, I was attached to the trace machine monitoring my baby’s heartbeat for quite a few hours. Her heart rate was fairly low, never reaching above the golden line of 140BPM, despite her being in no danger or stress. Take what you will from this one, but I wouldn’t use it as a reliable method of prediction since it didn’t work for me.

Chorionic Villus Sampling Or Amniocentesis
Recommended in rare cases for some pregnant people, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling screen for genetic abnormalities in a fetus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . As a byproduct of performing the tests, parents-to-be can learn the sex of their baby based on chromosomes.
With amniocentesis, a needle is inserted through the abdomen into the uterus to sample amniotic fluid. The procedure carries a small risk of miscarriage, but it’s generally very safe. The procedure is usually done between 15 and 20 weeks gestation.
On the other hand, CVS involves taking a sample of tissue from the placenta for screening, and it also looks at fetal chromosomes. CVS is usually done between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, the CDC says.
Blood Tests You Can Do At Home
If you do just want an early read on your babys sex and not a full genetic workup, you might be better off using an at-home gender DNA kit.
These tests work basically the same way as the lab tests do, but they dont screen your blood for any genetic abnormalities in your babys DNA. Instead, they look only for male chromosomes.
For those who arent science whizzes, this means that if a Y chromosome is detected, youll be told youre having a boy if not, a girl. Basic biology for the win!
Currently, only a couple of companies have these gender DNA kits. They all offer a similar service: They mail you a kit with instructions on how to collect a small blood sample and send it back to their lab for analysis.
Its recommended that you be at least 7 to 8 weeks pregnant for these tests.
Heres a breakdown of the three major companies offering this service:
- SneakPeek. The standard package, with results in 5 to 7 days, costs $79. For results in 72 hours, youll have to pay $149. Accuracy is said to be 99.9 percent at 8 weeks pregnant.
- Peekaboo. For $65, you can receive and send back this kit, expecting results in 72 hours after they receive your sample. They state their accuracy rate is 99.5 percent.
- eGenderTest. If youre at least 9 weeks pregnant, you can take this test for $169. The accuracy rate is alleged to be 98 percent results take 3 business days to turn around once they receive your sample.
However, there arent any independently published studies confirming this claim.

What To Ask Your Doctor
Once you get a positive pregnancy test, its time to make an appointment with the OB-GYN. Theyll be able to advise you on what to expect at week 5 of pregnancy, and also determine your gestational age and due date. Theyll probably order tests, review your family history, and schedule you for an ultrasound.
Discuss any symptoms with your doctor. Theyre also the best person to answer your doubts, from recommending the best prenatal supplements to the size of your 5-week embryo.
Week 5 of your pregnancy can bring many changes, from a positive pregnancy test to the many symptoms that you might develop. Its normal to feel anxious once you find out that youre expecting, but you should also enjoy these weeks as your body adjusts to a new life. While your 5-week old baby is still a long way from meeting the world, its already growing fast inside your belly. 8 months to go can seem like a long time, but youll be holding your new baby before you know it.

Role Of Fundal Height
Your midwife or doctor may measure your fundal height at your pregnancy well-checks. The fundal height is the measurement in centimeters from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus. It should grow at a predictable rate as your pregnancy continues.
After 20 weeks, your fundal height in centimeters will typically be the same as the number of weeks you are pregnant. In other words, at 21 weeks pregnant, your fundal height should be around 21 centimeters .
Sometimes, the fundal height wont match perfectly. Slight variations are normal, but if you are measuring much smaller or larger than expected, your primary care provider may want to investigate with another ultrasound.
While useful, the fundal height is not an accurate measurement of gestational age and would not affect the estimated due date in any way.

Who Needs A Dating Scan
Most babies are born about 38 weeks after conception. Since many women ovulate and conceive about 2 weeks after their last period, this is often about 40 weeks since the beginning of their last period. Thats why people often talk about pregnancy lasting for 40 weeks.
Women with a regular 28-day cycle can calculate an estimated due date for their baby by counting 40 weeks from the first day of their last menstrual period. This may not be so simple or accurate in other situations, like if you have long or irregular cycles, dont remember when you had your last period, or if you got pregnant while taking contraception that affected your cycle.
Ultrasounds At Different Stages Of Pregnancy
- First trimester: Your first ultrasound takes place during the first trimester which is the time from the first day of your last period to 13 weeks. In the first ultrasound, your doctor will confirm whether youâre pregnant and also how long youâve been pregnant.
- âSecond trimester: The next ultrasound is carried out in the second trimester to find out how well your baby is growing and developing. You can also find out if youâre having more than one baby and your due date.
- âThird trimester: An additional ultrasound may be ordered for the third trimester . At this time, your doctor may want to find out whether your baby is growing as expected, the babyâs position, and the babyâs expected weight.
Your doctor may also check the location of the placenta, and how much amniotic fluid is present around the baby.
The placenta is a structure that develops during pregnancy to provide oxygen and nutrients to your baby as it grows. It also helps with removing waste products from the baby’s blood. Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby inside the uterus and works like a shock absorber to keep the baby safe from outside pressures.

Calculate Using A Dating Ultrasound
A dating ultrasound, which measures the length of the fetus from crown to rump, is an accurate way to estimate your due date or how far along you are if completed within the first trimester . Most women have a pretty good idea of when their last period was, within a day or two, says Scurfield. If a woman has no idea, youll want to try to get her as early as you can. Once you get past 13 weeks, the variability of the growth is such that an ultrasound can be off by a week or so.
What Should You Know About At
Though at-home pregnancy tests are highly accurate when taken correctly, the same cant be said of most at-home kits designed to predict your babys gender. Most of the tests, which you can find in some drugstores and online, claim to test for your babys sex hormones in your urine.
But experts agree that the results arent reliable, and even the tests themselves recommend waiting on making any gender-based decisions until youve had your ultrasound.
What about kits that find out your babys gender by testing your blood? Some research suggests that they could give you a definitive answer, however, there have also been reports of test manufacturers filing for bankruptcy after lawsuits from new moms who found out after giving birth that their results were wrong.
The bottom line? These kinds of tests arent worth counting on. Even though it can be hard to wait, youre better off finding out your babys sex from an ultrasound or a prenatal test prescribed by your provider. But if you really want to try one, run it by your practitioner first.
As for all those gender prediction old wives’ tales? While they’re certainly fun to read about, there’s no science behind them .

How Accurate Is Gender Prediction Using Ultrasound
Gender predictions made by ultrasound have an accuracy rate “north of 90 percent,” Carr said. But mistakes can be made when determining gender because it depends on the clarity of the images and the skills of the person interpreting them.
Until the 14th week of pregnancy, baby boys and girls look exactly the same on ultrasound, Carr said. Beyond this point, noticeable anatomical differences in the genitalia can show up on the scan.
After 18 weeks of pregnancy and beyond, Carr said that ultrasound has pretty good reliability for gender prediction if the baby is in a good position in the mother’s uterus , and the legs are far enough apart that there is good visibility between them.
“Gender-telling is not exotic,” Carr said. When a sonographer looks between the legs, if it’s “an outie,” it’s a boy, he explained.
If You Dont Find Out The Gender Youll Need To Be Prepared
Theres still a lot that can when it comes to preparing for a surprise baby!
As Im sure youre aware of, a new baby requires lots of fun planning and preparations.
- Get neutral newborn onesies and swaddles | Get light green, white, orange, or yellow onesises and swaddles. Get enough to last you a week or two and then you can buy more later in more gender appropriate colors if you need. It is hard to find neutral type clothes, but its not impossible. Ive bought a pack of these to get me started.
- Forget about everything needing to be gender appropriate | If my boys blue crib sheets are dirty they sleep on pink ones. Do the blue bibs are in the wash they use their sisters old one? I dont care one tiny bitty bit. They will survive and what we already own is already paid for.
- Create a neutral palette that can go either way | If you have a room and really want to be surprised, you can decorate in neutral greys or beiges until the baby comes. Have your decor chosen for both genders then click order when you are enjoying some peace and quiet in the hospital recovering away from your other, louder, children. Ahem.
- Have a party or shower afterwards | Instead of having a shower before the baby is born, have a party afterwards. Just because its not the most common thing, doesnt mean that you cant do it. You can do whatever you want. You can even have a blessing shower and bring the baby so people can meet the little tyke.
