Can You Get Pregnant With An Arm Implant

Myth: Who Can Use The Method

Effectiveness of the Birth Control Implant in Your Arm | Planned Parenthood Video

Some women who seek family planning believe that implants should not be used by women who are young or who have not had children.

Fact: Nearly all women can use implants safely and effectively

Implants are suitable for women of any age, regardless of whether they have had children or not. Implants do not make women infertilefertility returns as soon as implants are removed. Breastfeeding women can use implants if at least six weeks have passed since they have given birth.

Implants may not be suitable for women who require a family planning method without hormones. For example, women who have or have had breast cancer and women with active, serious liver disease should choose an alternative method.

Birth Control : : Nexplanon And Weight Gain

Ive had Nexplanon for a year now and within a month of getting it put in, Ive gained almost 30 pounds with no change to my diet, exercise or daily routines. Ive tried dieting and exercising and cant seem to lose more than ten pounds. Im finally getting it removed but Im having a hard time deciding what BC to use next because I really want to lose this weight and Im scared the next BC I use is going to give me the same issue. Has anyone else had this issue and found a BC that was better without the weight gain?

Can You Get Pregnant On The Birth Control Implant

According to Planned Parenthood, the birth control implant, Nexplanon, is one of the most effective forms of birth control. It is over 99% effective, meaning fewer than 1 in every 100 women who use it will get pregnant. Once the implant is inserted in your arm, you do not have to worry about remembering to take it or use it unlike other forms of birth control, like the pill or condoms. The birth control implant lasts up to five years if you decide you want to get pregnant, you can have it removed at any time, and you will be able to get pregnant right away. For all these reasons, it is a reliable, convenient, and effective form of birth control.

How Long Does It Take For The Birth Control Implant To Work

If you get Nexplanon during the first 5 days of your period, youre protected from pregnancy right away.

If you get the implant at any other time in your cycle, use some other form of birth control during the first week. After that first week, the implant starts working and youre protected from pregnancy for up to 5 years. Thats why its called get-it-and-forget-it birth control.

Will The Contraceptive Implant Make Me Gain Weight

Birth Control Implants: History, Side Effects, and Abuse

There is no strong evidence that the contraceptive implant makes women put on weight. Progesterone can do this, but more so when taken in higher doses than you receive from the contraceptive implant. It can also cause fluid retention initially – which will make your weight go up – but this is usually due to fluid rather than fat.

However, many women do feel that the contraceptive implant has made them gain weight. If this happens to you then this weight gain is likely to reverse when you stop using the implant.

The early side-effects of the contraceptive implant are rather like the early symptoms of pregnancy. This is not surprising, since the early symptoms of pregnancy are caused by progesterone. It is not unusual for women to feel they may be pregnant when they first have the implant. A pregnancy test will give you an accurate answer.

What Is A Progestin Implant

Also known as a contraceptive implant, this form of contraception is inserted under the skin of the womans arm. It very slowly releases progestin, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, as pointed out in this study published in the journal Perinatology and Human Reproduction.

Its an ideal form of contraception for women who arent planning on having children for a significant period of time. Depending on the product, it can provide protection for between 3 to 5 years. At the end of this period, the woman can decide either to have it replaced or removed altogether. If she wants to have children, then the implant is removed and within one to three months normal ovulation resumes.

Progestin implants are flexible capsules or cylinders which a doctor implants or removes via a simple surgical procedure. You dont need to go to hospital and the doctor will simply use a local anaesthetic. Its job is to prevent ovulation and make the cervical mucus thicker, which makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.

Can Anything Make An Implant Less Effective

Some medicines may make an implant less effective. This includes some medicines used in epilepsy, HIV and tuberculosis, and St John’s wort . These medications reduce the effectiveness of the implant by increasing the rate at which your body disposes of the hormone in the blood. If you are using one of these medicines you will need to consider a different or additional contraceptive method.

The implant is not affected by common antibiotics, or by an attack of diarrhoea or being sick .

Is There Anything I Can Do To Further Reduce My Chances Of Getting Pregnant On The Implant

Can you get pregnant while on birth control implant – Can the implant stop working

The most important thing is to remember to have your implant replaced after three years and to be aware that your risk of pregnancy can be increased if you are taking medications called enzyme-inducing drugs. These include certain epilepsy and HIV treatments, and the over the counter remedy St Johns Wort, which people sometimes take to help with symptoms of low mood, depression and anxiety.

These drugs can cause decreased blood levels of progesterone, reducing the implants effectiveness. This is because they cause progesterone in the blood to be eliminated more quickly than would normally occur, making progesterone only contraception less effective. While using these medications, it is important to use other contraception and to continue using other contraception for 28 days after you finish using them.7 Featured image is of a person holding a pregnancy test. How Is The Nexplanon Birth Control Arm Implant Different From The Iud

The Nexplanon birth control arm implant and IUDs have quite a few similarities:

  • Theyre both undetectable. You cant visibly see if someone has Nexplanon or an IUD. So your reproductive choices remain your business and yours alone.

  • Theyre both low maintenance. You dont have to remember to take a pill or change a patch. With one office visit, youre good for years.

  • Theyre both very effective. Both Nexplanon and IUDs are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. This is more effective than the pill, patch, or ring.

  • They both take about the same time to have placed. Insertion and removal visits for both Nexplanon and IUDs take about 30 minutes or less.

  • Neither protects you from sexually transmitted infections . While both are effective for preventing pregnancy, neither protects against STIs, such as HIV. Its important to use a condom to help protect yourself.

While there are many similarities between the Nexplanon birth control implant and IUD, there are definite differences, too.

The IUD is a T-shaped device thats placed inside your uterus, through the vagina. This means hormones from an IUD only have to travel a short distance to get to the uterine lining. On the other hand, hormones from the Nexplanon arm implant have to make their way through the body using the bloodstream. This raises the chances for side effects with the implant, such as prolonged irregular bleeding .

What Is The Contraceptive Implant

The implant, also known by the brand name Nexplanon , is a small plastic rod that is placed in the upper arm by a doctor or nurse, and is used for contraception, or birth control.

The plastic device is about the size of a matchstick. The implant is a highly effective method of contraception but can have some side effects which can include changes to your periods, as well as tender breasts and mood swings for example.

How Does The Implant Work

Contraceptive implants: Women fear for fertility as hundreds find ...

The birth control implant is a tiny, thin rod about the size of a matchstick. Its also called Nexplanon and theres a slightly older version called Implanon. A doctor inserts the implant under the skin of your upper arm. It releases the hormone progestin to stop you from getting pregnant.

The hormones in the birth control implant prevent pregnancy in two ways:

  • Progestin thickens the mucus on your cervix, which stops sperm from swimming through to your egg. When sperm cant meet up with an egg, pregnancy cant happen.

  • Progestin can also stop eggs from leaving your ovaries , so theres no egg to fertilize. When eggs arent released, you cant get pregnant.

One of the awesome things about the implant is that it lasts for a long time up to 5 years but its not permanent. If you decide you want to get pregnant or you just dont want to have your implant anymore, your doctor can take it out. Youre able to get pregnant quickly after the implant is removed. You can keep track of your insertion and removal dates using our birth control app.

What Are The Side

Most side-effects caused by the contraceptive implant occur when you first start using the implant. They are not usually severe.

The most common side-effects are:

  • Changes in your periods .
  • Fluid retention and breast tenderness.
  • Acne: your skin may temporarily worsen, although it can also improve.
  • Itching or bruising after implant insertion.

The contraceptive implant does not cause ‘thinning’ of your bones . It does not usually cause altered sex drive , but some women who have experienced other side-effects also say that their sex drive was reduced.

Other symptoms, including mood swings or low mood, weight gain and breast tenderness, are commonly described. However, the evidence that they are caused by the contraceptive implant is very unclear, as they seem to occur equally commonly in women using non-hormonal methods of contraception.

. Herein, can you still get pregnant with the implant?

Only five out of 10,000 women who use the implant for a year get pregnant. Pregnancy can‘t happen if there’s no egg to join with sperm. Progestin also thickens the mucus in your cervix, which blocks sperm. For most women who use the implant, periods become fewer and lighter.

Will Other Medicines Affect The Implant

Trying To Get Pregnant After Nexplanon Removal

Some medicines can make the implant less effective, such as:

    • medicines for HIV, epilepsy and tuberculosis
    • complementary remedies, such as St John’s Wort
    • some antibiotics, such as rifabutin or rifampicin

If you’re taking any of these medicines, you’ll need additional contraception , or you may wish to use a different method of contraception that isn’t affected by your medicine.

Always tell your doctor that you’re using an implant if you’re prescribed any medicine. You can also ask them whether the medicine you’re taking will affect the implant.

How Can I Have Fun Without Getting Pregnant

Guess what, kissing will not get you pregnant, nor will making out. Neither will dry humping if either you or your partner is wearing some kind of clothing that covers the genitals. You also cant get pregnant by masturbating, either by yourself or while masturbating in the same room as someone else. Searching for more frisky fun? Try using sex toys with yourself or a partner, or what Scarleteen calls manual sex, aka fingering and hand jobs. These are all risk-free from pregnancy and are great options if youre not using birth control and dont want to be pregnant.
