How Is My Due Date Calculated
There are several ways your due date is determined. If you happen to know the day you conceived, you can count 38 weeks from that day to find your due date.
But very few expectant moms know exactly when they conceived. Even if you only had sex once during your fertile period, you wouldn’t conceive on that day unless you happen to be ovulating. Sperm can live for up to five days inside your fallopian tubes. So, it could be up to five days after you have sex that you release an egg and it gets fertilized by a waiting sperm. That’s the day you conceive.

Yes, of course. So, when does conception happen? There is no possibility being 100 % sure about it. You may be a little bit more certain if you track your cycle and have it perfectly regular. But even ultrasounds and blood tests aren’t faultless. Remember, that your fertile window begins up to 5 days before ovulation and ends one day after it. Pregnancy is a term used to describe a woman’s state over a time period during which one or more offspring develops inside of a woman. Childbirth usually occurs approximately 38 weeks after conception, or about 40 weeks after the last menstrual period. The World Health Organization defines a normal pregnancy term to last between 37 and 42 weeks. During a person’s first OB-GYN visit, the doctor will usually provide an estimated date at which the child will be born, or due date. Alternatively, the due date can also be estimated based on a person’s last menstrual period.
While the due date can be estimated, the actual length of pregnancy depends on various factors, including age, length of previous pregnancies, and weight of the mother at birth.1 However, there are still more factors affecting natural variation in pregnancy terms that are not well understood. Studies have shown that fewer than 4% of births occur on the exact due date, 60% occur within a week of the due date, and almost 90% occur within two weeks of the due date.2 As such, while it is possible to be fairly confident that a person’s child will be born within about two weeks of the due date, it is currently not possible to predict the exact day of birth with certainty.

The due date is a good indication of when you will give birth. With a regular cycle of 28 days, this tool is reliable. Still, it remains an indication and the midwife will determine the official due date.
A few situations that may affect the outcome of the tool:
- You were still on a contraceptive pill
- An irregular cycle
- A menstrual cycle that is much longer or shorter than 28 days
How Do I Calculate My Due Date
Wondering how your practitioner estimated your due date? Its calculated counting from the first day of your last menstrual period , not the day you conceived. So try to remember the first day of your last period and add 40 weeks to that.
You can also calculate your due date with the following formula:
- Subtract three months from the first day of your last menstrual period
For example, if the first day of your last menstrual period was June 2, 2022, subtract three months to get March 2, 2022. Add seven days and you’ll get March 9, 2022. Finally, add one year to find your estimated due date of March 9, 2023.

Average Length Of Pregnancy
While 40 weeks is the average, its not unusual to deliver your baby earlier or later. In the past, 37 weeks was considered to be a full-term pregnancy. This definition impacted when it was considered safe to induce labor or schedule a cesarean section.
However, we now know that being born at 37 weeks can increase health risks. Its not nearly as risky as being born before 37 weeks, but it’s not ideal. Research shows its typically better for a baby to stay in the uterus a few weeks longer to at least 39 weeks, if possible.

He loves his milk, any kind so if left to his own devices he wouldn’t eat and just drink I cut out his lunch formula a week ago, replacing it with a snack that has the same calories roughly, and he does fine.

The other method of using the pregnancy conception calculator is to provide the first day of your last menstruation and the average length of your menstrual cycle. The majority of cycles last around 28 days. However, typical values range between 21 and 35 days.
In cycles of 28 days, ovulation happens around 14 days before the beginning of the next cycle. So, if a cycle lasts 28 days, ovulation occurs the 14th day after the first day of the cycle . If it’s shorter, you subtract the corresponding number, e.g., for a 22 days cycle – ovulation occurs on the 8th day. If it’s longer, you add some days, e.g., for a 34-day cycle – ovulation is on the 20th day. For cycles longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days, these calculations are not applicable, and you should consult by a doctor. If you’re not sure how long your cycles are, leave the default number of 28 days.
When does conception happen? How long does conception take? The fertile window begins 3-5 days before the ovulation date and ends one day after it. It means to get pregnant, you should have intercourse within this time. Although sperm can survive up to 7 days inside a woman’s body, conception does not happen until ovulation. Therefore, conception day is the day of ovulation and might last for 24 hours after the egg is released. Therefore, the formula to estimate the conception date based on the LMP:
LMP + cycle length – 14 = conception date

Practical Example Of The Use Of Conception Date Calculator
Let’s take Anne. She is 11 weeks pregnant and still doesn’t know her conception day. The first day of her last period was 11 June 2018, and typically, her cycle lasts for 31 days . As mentioned before, we can assume that her ovulation began around 17 days after her LMP, on 28 June 2018.
11th June 2018 + 17 days = 28th June 2018
She conceived around her ovulation date , on 28 June 2018. However, instead of all this counting, she used our pregnancy conception calculator.
Next up is Maggie. She just came back from the doctor, who told her that the due date is on 19 September 2019. Now, she has one question: ‘what day did I conceive?’.
19th September 2019 – 266 days = 26th January 2019

So When Will I Have My Baby
Your provider counts 280 days from the first day of your LMP to determine your due date. But keep in mind that’s just an estimate. Only 5 percent of babies are born on their due date. You’re just as likely to deliver any time during the two weeks before or after that day. Your baby is considered full term between 39 and 41 weeks.
Note: Not everyone ovulates exactly two weeks after their LMP, so your due date may be adjusted if an early ultrasound indicates that your baby is more or less developed than expected.

Why start the clock on pregnancy before sperm even meets egg ? Using your last period is simply a more reliable benchmark to date a pregnancy from. Even if youre a master of cervical mucus and are sure about the day you ovulated as well as the day you had sex, you probably cant pinpoint the exact moment of conception.
Thats because theres a bigger window than you might think: Sperm can hang out and wait for an egg to fertilize for three to five days after theyve arrived, and an egg can be fertilized for up to 24 hours after its been released. That’s also good news, since it means youll already have clocked four weeks of pregnancy by the time you miss your period.

The actual length of pregnancy varies significantly among women. Just 4% of babies are born on their estimated due date, while 70% are born within ten days. The remaining 30% are born more than ten days before the due date or more than ten days after.
The reference above provides a delivery birth range of 38 weeks and four days to 41 weeks and three days with a probability of 70%.

Every person and every pregnancy is different, so you could start to show earlier or later than others. Itâs safe to say that you wonât see any difference in your pregnant bellyâs size at 1, 2, or 3 weeks.
