Types Of Birth Control & Their Effectiveness

I Got Pregnant With An IUD

For those who want to practice safe sex and prevent pregnancy, there are an array of options on the market. According to Planned Parenthood, condoms are 85% effective and birth control pills are 91% effective. However, these forms of contraception can fail due to user error. Even with the best intentions, condoms can break. Moreover, the pills have to be administered at the same time every day. Late and missed doses can lead to pregnancy.

This is why many doctors advise choosing more permanent preventative measures. The patch and the vaginal ring tend to be slightly more effective due to their weekly and monthly applications, but they still only prevent pregnancy 91% of the time.

The birth control shot is slightly better at 94% and it lasts up to three months. Nevertheless, the most effective methods of birth control are the implant and the IUD. These options last for years and the processes are reversible. Compared to their competition, these contraceptives have more than 99% efficacy.

It is important to remember that all forms of birth control have their pros and cons, so it is imperative to do your research. In addition, when looking for the best birth control method for you, take the time to discuss your options, the potential side effects, and the possible issues that can arise with your physician before making any final decisions.

Can Fertility Treatments Impact Home Pregnancy Test Results

Getting a false positive result is rare all Clearblue® pregnancy tests are over 99% accurate from the day you expect your period.5 But false positives can occur if youre taking medications that contain hCG.

For example, if youre undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment, some fertility medications will increase the presence of hCG in your body. If you take an at-home test too early, the increased level of hCG may lead to a false positive. You can wait seven days following your embryo transfer to take a test at home, but many doctors will recommend coming to their instead.6

How Effective Is An Iud

No type of birth control is 100% effective, the only 100% effective method is abstinence . IUDs have one of the highest rates of effectiveness at over 99%.

This is because once it is inserted, it protects from pregnancy 24 hours a day for every day of the year for up to 10 years. Once an IUD is in place, a woman does not have to remember to do anything else to ensure its effectiveness. IUDs will not protect against STDs, only condoms do this to a certain extent.

Iud Pregnancy Symptoms

IUDs are a very, very reliable method of birth control, Maureen Whelihan, M.D., an ob/gyn at the Center for Sexual Health & Education, tells SELF. Jason James, M.D., medical director at Miamis FemCare Ob-Gyn, agrees, but he also notes that even the best birth control can fail. Theres nothing thats 100 percent, he tells SELF.

Heres the generally accepted statistic: Fewer than one person out of every 100 with an IUD will get pregnant within the first year of use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites a 2011 Contraception review in its materials about effectiveness of different birth control methods. The review examined the largest and most methodologically sound data on the subject, concluding that the failure rate for Paragard and Mirena are 0.8 and 0.2 percent respectively.

A 2017 study in Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health studied 15,728 contraceptive use intervals from 6,683 women over four years, also concluding that IUDs were only likely to fail 1 percent of the time in a period of 12 months.

As you can see, the overall point is that getting pregnant with an IUD is extremely rare.

Since My Series Of Videos Went Viral On Tiktok Generating Over A Million Views I Thought This Was A Topic To Dive Further Into Plus I Still Had A Lot Of Unanswered Questions Surrounding My Experience So I Spoke To Expert Dr Mary Jane Minkin Who Is A Clinical Professor Of Obstetrics Gynecology And Reproductive Sciences At Yale University’s School Of Medicine She Had Some Great Information About Iuds And Very Informative Insight On My Situation:

Me: One of the reasons I kept the Paragard IUD is because I was told it is the only long-term contraceptive on the market that doesn’t use hormones. Is this true about the Paragard? How do the different kinds of IUDs work? Lastly, are IUDs really the MOST effective form of semi-permanent, long-term birth control.

Minkin:Yes, copper IUDs like the Paragard are the only long-term birth control on the market that do not use any hormones whatsoever. Other IUDs, like the Kyleena and Mirena, use small doses of synthetic progesterone to prevent pregnancy. Both types have a similar mechanism of action. Often times, people want to know if the IUDs prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. While this can happen as a back-up method, the primary mechanism of action is that both the copper and the progesterone are very hostile to sperm, making it nearly impossible for the sperm to get up into the uterus in the first place.

I would say because of human error, like the possibility of forgetting to take a birth control pill IUDs and contraceptive implants are the most effective form of birth control, with about 99% effectiveness.

Me: My husband never felt the pain he felt with the IUD the two years leading up to the ectopic pregnancy, nor has he the seven+ years I’ve had it in after. So I still don’t know what caused it to hurt for him if it was in the correct place. I never felt any pain and the strings were in place.

Me: Basically, did the IUD cause my ectopic pregnancy?

There are a few reasons pregnancy could occur in people with an IUD. In some cases, a person could become pregnant before the IUD is effective since not all types are effective immediately.

Copper IUDs, like Paragard, protect against pregnancy immediately because the copper changes the environment in the uterus, making it toxic to both the sperm and the egg. This prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and the egg from attaching to the uterine wall.

Hormonal IUDs, like Mirena or Kyleena, take about seven days to start working. These types are generally considered effective immediately if inserted during your period because of where you are in your menstrual and ovulation cycles.

If you have a hormonal IUD inserted, its recommended to use a backup contraceptive method or abstain from intercourse for seven days.

In other cases, pregnancy could occur if the IUD shifts its position. In a small number of people, the IUD may slip partially or entirely out of the uterus . If the IUD shifts, even partly out of position, it will no longer be fully effective at preventing pregnancy.

Another potential way pregnancy can occur is if the IUD remains in your body longer than its recommended expiration date. The amount of time an IUD can stay in and remain effective depends on the type of IUD. The manufacturer recommendations for a few IUDs are:

  • Skyla: Up to three years
  • Kyleena: Up to five years
  • Mirena: Up to seven years
  • Paragard: Up to 10 years

What Are The Risks Of Getting Pregnant With An Iud

A big risk is an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus, per ACOG. Heres the thing: Its not that the IUD itself increases your risk of an ectopic pregnancyits that, if a pregnancy were to happen, its more likely to have happened outside of the uterus, explains Dr. Aagaard. Patients arent at increased risk for ectopic pregnancies just because they have an IUD, and IUDs dont cause ectopic pregnancies, she says.

Doctors will also typically want to try to remove the IUD during a pregnancy if possible, Dr. Minkin says, due to the risk of infection and complications if it stays in place.

Studies have shown that the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and infection of the amniotic sac and fluid before delivery is significantly higher when IUDs are left in place during pregnancy compared to pregnancies in which the IUD is removed, Dr. Aagaard says. For most women whose IUD strings are visible through the cervix, we recommend removal of the IUD at the first visit.

If You Dont Want To Use A Test

How do I know if Im pregnant without taking a test? you may ask.

The answer is:

You cant know.

There are some symptoms like we mentioned in Step 2 but they dont always happen. And you can have those symptoms and not be pregnant.

If you are worried because you dont want your parents or somebody else to find out, dont worry. Pregnancy tests are very discreet and you can take them alone in the toilet.

You can go to the pharmacy to buy it or have it sent to your house.

So once again: If you think you may be pregnant, then take the test.
