What Exactly Is Implanon

How I Got Pregnant The First Month After Nexplanon

Implanon is a small rod of flexible plastic. It looks just like a matchstick from one of those matchbooks people collect from restaurants. It is 4 cms long and 2 mms wide and small enough to be very disceet when it is in place, inserted just under the womans skin. The plastic rod is infused with etonogestrel which is a synthetic female hormone, very similar to progesterone. And it is this hormone which prevents conception from occurring. Etonogestrel is slowly released into the bloodstream from the rod for about three years, after which time it either needs to be removed or a new one inserted.

Implanon cannot dissolve and wont travel anywhere until it is removed. It also contains a small amount of barium sulphate which makes it clearly visible on x-ray. Very occasionally, it is necessary for women to have an x-ray or ultrasound so that the exact location can be found.

It is important that the Implanon is easily felt under the skin. This means it can be easily located and seen as a slightly raised rectangular rod just under the surface of the skin. Implanon is most commonly inserted just above the elbow joint, on the inside aspect of the upper arm.

Ready For Pregnancy Your Current Birth Control May Affect How Fast Fertility Returns

When you decide to stop using birth control and try for a baby, you may be hoping to get pregnant right away. But the speed at which you can conceive may depend in part on the type of contraception youve been using.

A new study that analyzed data from nearly 18,000 women found that fertility returned quickest in patients who had used intrauterine devices or implants . These patients waited an average of just two menstrual cycles before conceiving.

Patients who used the pill or vaginal rings had to wait three cycles, those who used patch contraceptives waited four, and those who used injectable contraceptives required five to eight cycles for return of fertility.

However, the study also concluded that long-term use of any type of contraception did not have a lasting impact on the patient’s ability to get pregnant. In short, fertility is likely to return to normal, even if it does take time.

Studies like this further empower women to take control of their reproductive health. The more information you have, the better able you are to choose the best birth control method for your reproductive health and life goals.

If You Take Antibiotics While On The Pill

Theres a big, fat warning label on every pill packet that says taking antibiotics may lessen the efficacy of the pill, but many people dont read the fine print. However, theres only one antibiotic thats been proven to interfere with the pill: rifampin, which is used to treat tuberculosis and bacterial infections. Scientists claim that there isnt an issue when using other antibiotics. Their take is that pregnancy may occur because people may skip a pill or two when theyre not feeling well, or their bodies may not be able to absorb the hormones properly if theyre vomiting or have diarrhea. All that said, I know a decent number of pill-popping moms whove gotten pregnant while on antibiotics, so you probably dont want to chance it.

Combination Birth Control Methods

My Battle with the Nexplanon Implant Birth Control Steemit

Combination birth control methods include combination birth control pills, NuvaRing, and the patch. Unfortunately, there is a lot of myth and misinformation about these methods.

You may have heard it takes at least three months for ovulation to start up again after you stop the pill. This is not usually true. For most people, ovulation will start within weeks. For some, though, it can take one to three months.

Think about it like this: The pill works because it stops ovulation. If you miss a couple of pills, you might ovulate and you might get pregnant. Some healthcare providers even say you are most fertile just after you stop taking the pill.

So where does the three-month myth come from? Your healthcare provider may tell you to use a condom until you have had three periods. This is just because waiting will help you keep track of your cycle. That way, if you get pregnant, it will be easier to guess when the pregnancy happened.

There is no medical reason to wait after you stop birth control before trying to become pregnant. Just be prepared that your fertility may return within the first month.

NuvaRing and the Patch work the same way as the pill, so the same goes for these methods. Fertility should return quickly. Most research shows that 80% of people who stop using these methods and want to get pregnant will get pregnant within the first year. This number is the same as that of the general population.

How Is The Nexplanon Implant Used

Nexplanon is inserted through a needle into the skin of your upper arm, just inside and above the elbow. After the implant is inserted, your arm will be covered with 2 bandages. Remove the top bandage after 24 hours, but leave the smaller bandage on for 3 to 5 days. Keep the area clean and dry.

The timing of when you receive the Nexplanon implant depends on whether you were using birth control before, and what type it was.

You should be able to feel the implant under your skin. Tell your doctor if you cannot feel the implant at any time while it is in place.

The Nexplanon implant can remain in place for up to 3 years. If the implant is placed correctly, you will not need to use back-up birth control. Follow your doctors instructions.

You may have irregular and unpredictable periods while using Nexplanon. Tell your doctor if your periods are very heavy or long-lasting, or if you miss a period .

If you need major surgery or will be on long-term bed rest, or if you need medical tests, may need to have your Nexplanon implant removed for a short time. Any doctor or surgeon who treats you should know that you have a Nexplanon implant.

Have regular physical exams and mammograms, and self-examine your breasts for lumps on a monthly basis while using this medicine.

How Soon After Nexplanon Does Fertility Return

After removing this form of birth control, fertility takes between 14 and 30 days to restore.

Still, this does not apply to all since everyones body is different. Thus, be patient if the return of fertility does not come as soon as expected.

Suppose your fertility issues after Nexplanon removal procedure are still there after three years we advise you to see a doctor for checkups and find solutions for your problem.

You will need to have a local anaesthetic injection into the skin around the Implanon to numb the area. Local anaesthetic injections can sting and take a few minutes to be effective. You may want to speak with your pharmacist or GP about using local anaesthetic skin patches before the injections.

A small cut of around 2-3 mm is made and the Implanon is removed with a pair of surgical tweezers. You may need to have a stitch inserted if the cut was big enough but generally this is not necessary. In most women, the skin edges sit closely together and heal neatly. Occasionally, a minute scar is left but with time this will fade to white and become barely noticeable.

Occasionally, Implanon is inserted too deeply which results in a more difficult removal. If the Implanon cant be felt then it is sometimes necessary to have an ultrasound or an x-ray to locate exactly where it is under the skin. Once this is clear, then it is easier to target its exact location and then remove it.
