Can Taking The Birth Control Pill While Pregnant Hurt My Baby

Pregnancy FAQs : On Using Birth Control While Pregnant

If you’ve been taking the birth control pill and discover you are pregnant, you may wonder whether this could cause the baby harm and if there a chance that it may lead to a miscarriage or stillbirth.

Most research suggests that you need not worry. There are some types of birth control that may cause complications, but, for the most part, using birth control pills or other hormone delivery devices is relatively safe.

Do You Ovulate On The Pill

If you’re reliably using birth control pills, especially combination birth control pills that contain both estrogen and progestin, you will generally not ovulate on the pill. The hormones in the pill stop you from ovulating, which is what makes them effective birth control methods. If there is no egg released, there is nothing for sperm to fertilize and, therefore, no pregnancy.

The key to stopping ovulation with birth control pills is proper use. Understanding how each type of the pill stops ovulationand why dosing instructions are what they arecan help you gain a clearer understanding of your fertility.

Risks Of Birth Control While Pregnant

No studies have been done to prove whether birth control is safe later in pregnancy, mainly because pregnancy is not a time to prevent pregnancy. However, some people might take birth control for reasons other than pregnancy prevention.

If this is true for you, you should stop taking birth control if you get pregnant. The process of pregnancy is run by hormones. Knowing this, we can infer that taking anything that disrupts the bodys hormonal balance might not be a safe option.

The hormones they contain…are designed specifically to interfere with the normal production and function of ovarian hormones, for the purpose of preventing fertility and conception, explains Dr. Gersh. “It is possible that they may affect the development of the endocrine system by affecting the function of hormone receptors.

How Well Does It Work

Over the course of 1 year, about 9 out of 100 typical couples who rely on the Pill to prevent pregnancy will have an accidental pregnancy. Of course, this is an average figure and the chance of getting pregnant depends on whether you take your birth control pills every day. The Pill is an effective form of birth control, but even missing 1 day increases the chance of getting pregnant.

In general, how well each type of birth control method works depends on a lot of things. These include whether a person has any health conditions or is taking any medicines or herbal supplements that might interfere with its use . Talk to your doctor to check if anything you take could affect how the Pill works for you.

How well a particular method of birth control works also depends on whether the method chosen is convenient and whether the person remembers to use it correctly all the time.

A barrier method, like a condom or diaphragm, can be used alongside the pill as another line of defense. Condoms are also the best way to lower your risk of contracting STIs.

If youre in a monogamous relationship and trust your partner, you can also rely on the withdrawal method but dont use this as your only birth control. According to the CDC, its only 78 percent effective on its own.

If You Think You May Be Pregnant

It’s still not recommended that you continue taking birth control if you’re pregnant. In the end, every drug you take will be “taken” by your child, as well.

So if you think you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test to know for certain. If you can’t take a pregnancy test for any reason, consider using other forms of contraception until such time as you can.

Early Signs Of Pregnancy

If you miss a period, take a pregnancy test to make sure that youâre not pregnant. Other signs include tiredness, bloating, having to pee a lot, moodiness, nausea, and tender, swollen breasts. Most pregnancy tests will be positive by the time you miss your first period, but if yours isnât, itâs still important to see your doctor if youâre more than a week or two late to rule out any other health conditions and to confirm that you arenât pregnant.

Can You Get Pregnant If You Use Condoms

If you use condoms perfectly every single time you have sex, theyre 98 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. But most people don’t use them perfectly, so in real life, condoms are about 85 percent effective. That means almost one in five women will get pregnant each year if they just use condoms.

The best way to make sure condoms are as effective as possible is to use them correctly. Some of the most common mistakes include:

  • Putting them on too late, or pulling them off too early
  • Not leaving space at the tip of the condom for semen
  • Not checking one for damage before use
  • Using an oil based-lubricant like Vaseline or massage oil, which can damage the latex

Signs You Might Be Pregnant On Birth Control

Is it possible to get pregnant while using birth control right after having a baby?

This can be tough because many side-effects of birth control mimic pregnancy. The only sure way to tell if you are pregnant while on birth control is a positive pregnancy test. Women on birth control may miss periods once in a while, they may feel nausea from the hormones, and possibly have light spotting in the middle of the month and there is no way to know if this is a side-effect or implantation spotting. Birth control pills can also cause breast soreness, altered sense of smell, and mood swings. If you are taking the pill and suspect pregnancy, see your doctor or take a home pregnancy test to prevent complications. But it helps to understand the early signs of pregnancy.

I am on the 21 day birth control pack of Microgestin 1.5/30, I am a Sunday starter. This is my first month on the pill, I followed the Pamphlets instructions and did not have unprotected sex for the first 7 days on the pill. I had unprotected sex on the last 3 days of my active pill pack and the sunday that I stop taking my pills. I want to know if I can still get pregnant during the 7 days that I am supposed to be on my “period”. I do not plan on having anymore sex during this time but I know that sperm stays in your body for awhile… so is it possible?

One more thing is I missed one pill, which I take at 10pm. It was the Wednesday of my first week on the pill and I took it immediately when I woke up in the morning. So I took 2 pills in one day.

I’d really appreciate the help!

A doctor or a nurse practitioner must prescribe the Pill. He or she will ask about a girl’s health and family medical history, and do a complete physical exam, which might include a pelvic exam. The doctor or NP will usually ask the girl to come back in a few months to have her blood pressure checked and to see if she is having any problems.

After that, girls who are having sex should get routine exams every 6 months to a year, or as recommended.

Can You Get Pregnant On The Patch

The birth control patch, like the birth control pill, contains synthetic estrogen and progesterone that fools your body into thinking its pregnant. You wear the patch on your belly, upper arm, butt or back, and your skin absorbs the hormones into your body.

The patch has a similar rate of effectiveness to the birth control pill around nine percent. The main reason women get pregnant on the patch is because they forget to take it off and replace it once a week. With “perfect” use, however, the effectiveness rate is around 99 percent.

What To Do If You Miss A Dose

If you are late taking a birth control pill, don’t panic. It’s only human to forget every now and then. There is no point in beating yourself up about it. Instead, try to identify why you missed the dose.

    • Was it caused by a change in your schedule?
    • Was there an event or incident that distracted you?
    • Did you rush off to work before realizing your mistake?

If you are late taking a pill, here is what you should do:

  • Take a dose as soon as you remember. This may mean doubling the dose if you missed an entire day. Read the packet insert for instructions on how and when to double up or call your healthcare provider’s office for assistance.
  • Use a backup method of birth control to help decrease your risk of pregnancy.
  • Make a note detailing what caused you to miss the dose. Keeping a daily treatment diary is particularly useful if you are just starting out on the pill.

What It Really Takes To Get Pregnant After Birth Control

You’ve quit your contraceptive and are ready to start a family, but could your pill or IUD have lingering effects on your fertility?

When Camillia, 34, decided that she and her partner were ready to try for a baby, she went to her doctor to have her IUD removed. “My doctor said I could get pregnant right away, but I thought that because of my age it would take longer,” she says. Turns out, her doctor was right. Camillia was surprised when she became pregnant just ten days later.

It’s not uncommon for women to believe that there will be a delay in fertility after being on birth control, and it’s a concern that gynecologists constantly try to squash. So what’s going on? Glenmarie Matthews, an OB-GYN in the family planning division at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City says that misunderstandings surrounding conception and birth controlsparked by both poor research and well-circulated mythsare to blame. “There were a lot of misconceptions around the pill when it was first introduced, and in the 1980s there was some research that suggested that oral contraceptives might delay fertility after discontinuation,” she says. But since then, multiple studies have been published that show that the pill does not in fact affect fertility. Ditto goes for most other forms of birth control.

Still questioning how your specific form of birth control will impact your pregnancy plans? We break it down here:

    How Birth Control Works

Pregnancy While On Birth Control (Obstetrics – High Risk)

Many birth control methods use sex hormones to trigger changes in your body that prevent pregnancy. Elevated levels of hormones such as progestin, either alone or combined with estrogen, can prevent ovulation as well as thicken the tissue lining in your uterus so eggs can’t join together with sperm or implant in the uterine wall.

The most common form of hormonal birth control is the pill, which 28% of Americans use to prevent pregnancy. Other methods that use hormones include vaginal rings, patches, subcutaneous implants, injections, and some IUDs.

Tips To Increase The Effectiveness Of The Pill

    • She prefers contraceptives that come with 24 pills and 4 placebos, since if you forget to take the first or second pill in the pack, ovulation is less likely to occur, because not so many days have passed since took the last dose of hormone. You can also consult with your doctor if you are a candidate for extended cycle contraceptives, those in which the placebo ingestion occurs once every three months and the period only comes four times a year.
    • Some experts recommend that when you have forgotten a pill, when you remember instead of taking one, take two at a time. Of course, whenever two consecutive pills have been forgotten, a second contraceptive method should be used .
    • Buy more than one packet of birth control. Having several boxes will allow you to fight forgetting the first pill by forgetting to buy the next months pack on time.
    • Every time you go to the doctor and they prescribe you some medicine, it is important that you consult with the specialist what type of interaction this remedy can have with your contraceptive pill.
    • If you vomit within three hours of taking your pill, there is a risk that you have expelled the pill through vomiting. In those cases, opt for a second method of birth control.

Can You Get Pregnant If You Have An Implant

The birth control implant is a flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick that is placed under the skin of your upper arm. It releases a low, steady dose of synthetic progestin to thicken your cervical mucus and thin the lining of the uterus, preventing pregnancy.

Nexplanon is actually the most effective birth control option out there, with a failure rate of only .05 percent. That means that out of 10,000 women, only five using the implant will get pregnant within a year. This is almost always due to incorrect insertion rather than the implant itself.

How Soon Can You Get Pregnant After Stopping Birth Control

Here’s what to know about fertility, different methods of birth control and what it all means when it comes to conception.

Are you ready to stop birth control? While it may mean you’re ready to start trying for a baby, people stop birth control for many different reasons, including wanting to try a different contraceptive method or experiencing a change in insurance that affects the price of a birth control prescription. Whatever the reason, it’s important to understand your body so you aren’t shocked by a pregnancy, or disappointed that it didn’t happen immediately.

“I tell my patients not to stop their birth control until they’re ready to get pregnant,” says Dr. Leena Nathan, an OB-GYN at University of California, Los Angeles Health. Whether it’s the IUD, or the pill, most people return to their normal fertility “pretty much immediately,” Nathan says.

Our Health & Wellness newsletter puts the best products, updates and advice in your inbox.

Some patients who stop birth control conceive before their first period off the pill, Nathan says. And while everyone’s body is different and not everyone will get pregnant the month they stop the pill or remove their birth control device, there’s no fertility latency period for the majority of birth control methods.
