Before trying to get pregnant, you should try to be as healthy as possible. In fact, most doctors will recommend that you make an appointment with your obstetrician before youre pregnant.
At this preconception visit, youll talk about existing health problems and get screened for genetic diseases. You can also address other health concerns you might have.
Your doctor might recommend that you make lifestyle changes before you get pregnant. These might include:
- getting to a healthy weight
- improving diet/exercise habits
How Does The Menstrual Cycle Work
- Your cycle starts on the first day of your period and continues up to the first day of your next period.
- At the same time, eggs begin to mature in the ovary.
- The lining of the womb thickens ready for fertilisation.
- During ovulation your cervical mucus becomes thinner and clearer to help the sperm reach the released egg.
- About 10 to 16 days before the start of your next period, an egg is released from one of the ovaries .
- If sperm is present at the moment of ovulation, or some time during the next 24 hours, the egg may be fertilised.
- If the egg has not been fertilised, the egg is re-absorbed by the body, the hormone levels drop, and the womb lining is shed. This is the beginning of your next period.
When Am I Most Fertile
The most fertile time in your cycle are the days leading up to ovulation, before the egg is released from the ovary. After ovulation the egg survives for just 24 hours, while sperm retain fertilising capability for two to three days in the fallopian tubes. For this reason, we recommend that couples have sexual intercourse every two days throughout the females Fertile Window. This means that sperm are ready and waiting for the egg when the female ovulates. If you wait until after the female has ovulated before you have sex, you will most likely have missed the opportunity for conception that month.

How Common Is Pregnancy After 40
Implicit in this question is the reality that fertility declines with age. The estimated rate of infertility in women aged 15 to 34 years of age is 7-9%. By contrast, for women 40-44 years of age, the rate is approximately 30%. This is a significant increase, but it also means that 70% of women in the latter age range are not infertile! In other words, as a woman in the age range of 40-44, the odds that you will be able to conceive spontaneously are in your favor.
However, due to the increased risk of infertility in this age range, we typically dont advise this population of women to try as long before getting an infertility evaluation. For example, for women younger than age 35, we advise 12 months of trying to conceive before initiating assessment for infertility. For women 35-40, we reduce that period to six months. In addition, for women over the age of 40, while there is no strict guideline, we dont usually recommend waiting a full six months.
Chances Of Getting Pregnant After Ovulation
Also known as the luteal phase, this final portion of your cycle lasts a minimum of 12 days and a maximum of 16 days. Progesterone starts to rise, signaling that the ovaries don’t need to release any more eggs this month. Your cervical mucus will dry up and create a plug to prevent any additional sperm from entering the uterus.
It takes about six days for any fertilized eggs to travel to your uterus. If one implants in your endometrium, you’ll start to see the rise in human chorionic gonadotropin , the hormone measured by home pregnancy tests, within a week.
Your chances of conceiving: Low. Once the egg has been released, there’s not much that can be done until next month. But there’s certainly no harm in having sex if you’re in the mood!
Don’t sweat it if it’s time for your cycle to start over again and you’re still not pregnant. You may not have tracked your most fertile days accurately, in which case your guy’s swimmers never had the chance to work their magic. The vast majority of couples who are trying to conceive do so within a year, with only about half achieving their goal by 6 months. Talk to your doctor or a fertility specialist about any concerns regarding your chances of getting pregnant.

Brief Intro To Ovulation
The ovulation cycle lasts 28 days on average. Starting from Day 1, when the period starts, the first 14 days are gearing up for ovulation. On Day 14, the egg is released and travels through the Fallopian tube toward the uterus. This journey takes around 6 days. If the egg is fertilized, it implants in the uterus around Day 23.
Critically, the egg survives only an average of 24 hours, well before it makes it to the uterus. Therefore sperm must be waiting around in the Fallopian tube, right as the egg is released.
Luckily, sperm live up to 5 days in the Fallopian tube. Therefore, the best chance of conception happens the day before or the day of ovulation. Conception can still happen up to 5 days before ovulation, with lower chances.
What Is Precum Exactly
“Pre-ejaculate fluid is a normal part of physiology for lubrication produced by glands of the penis to facilitate sexual intercourse,” says Dr. Hsieh. “The penile glands producing the pre-ejaculate fluids do not produce sperm , and it is believed that sperm found in the pre-ejaculate fluids are residual sperm inside the urethra from prior ejaculations.”
This fluid is mostly made up of mucus, proteins, and enzymes meant to balance its pH, and make a man’s urethra less acidic as to give sperm a better chance of surviving in the super acidic vagina.

Pretty high…lol. I hope you’re old enough to handle the responsibilities of having a child. If he ejaculated inside you I’d be taking a test about a week and a half after your missed period to see if you are pregnant.

Unprotected sex gives you a high chance of pregnancy if you are both healthy and fertile. The highest chance of getting pregnant is in the five days before ovulation, before the egg is released into your fallopian tubes and then goes down to your uterus.
Mind you, though it’s only a matter of time before you get pregnant if you are both healthy and fertile, it still takes people quite a while depending on their ages sometimes, like between three months and a year. If you miss that fertile window for the month there’s just no way of getting pregnant.

Late Intercourse: Can You Get Pregnant Right Before Your Period
The chances of getting pregnant just before your period are lower because while sperm can hang on quite some time in the vaginal canal, the egg is a bit more delicate. Most studies put viability at about 12 to 24 hours before its long gone. In this case, that means to become pregnant just before your period, you would need to ovulate quite late.
Ex/ 26-day cycle, ovulation CD 22, intercourse on CD 23, egg survives CD 22-23.
It would be nigh impossible to catch the following cycles egg this way if you are wondering. Why? When youre trying to conceive, it can feel like everyone around you is getting pregnant without even trying. It can be heart-rending, but its important to know that most couples dont get pregnant in one shot.
How long does it take to get pregnant?According to Yolanda Kirkham, an OB-GYN at Womens College Hospital and St. Josephs Health Centre in Toronto, your chances of conceiving each cycle you try are 25 to 30 percent if youre under 35, eight to 15 percent if youre 35 to 39, five percent if youre 40 to 42 and one to two percent at age 43. Age affects not only fertility rates but also miscarriage rates, which go up from around 10 percent in your 20s to 15 percent after age 35 and up to 50 percent by age 45.
Its worth tracking your ovulation to improve your odds: According to a 2003 study published in the journal Human Reproduction, when 346 women ages 20 to 44 timed their intercourse to help them conceive, they had a 38 percent chance of conceiving in one cycle, a 68 percent chance within three cycles, an 81 percent chance within six cycles and a 92 percent chance of getting pregnant within 12 cycles.
While its helpful to know these stats so that youll recognize when its time to seek help, Kirkham says its important to not get too hung up on the numbers. We arent robots, she says.
