Its still a good idea to talk to your doctor if youre over 35 and have been trying for 6 months. If youre over 40 its advisable to talk to your doctor straight away.

One good bit of news is that if this is not your first baby, the risk of preterm labor and birth is less than a mother having her first baby over 40.
What makes labor and birth more complicated in your 40s is largely your health. A woman who has a chronic condition is more likely to experience complications than a woman who does not. Though chronic conditions are only a piece of the puzzle.
There is some belief that a soon-to-be mother’s age and mental state increase the risk of complications during labor, including induction of labor and cesarean section. How To Conceive After 40
The process of conceiving after 40 is no different for many people. For heterosexual couples to conceive, the couple must have intercourse during the womans fertile window. This window includes the days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation.
Using ovulation predictor tests can help pinpoint the release of eggs. Monitoring basal body temperature can help a person check whether they have ovulated. Doing this is important as a woman ages, as some women stop ovulating or do not ovulate as frequently.
To monitor basal body temperature, people can take their temperature at the same time each morning as soon as they wake up. It is important to do this immediately in the morning, after at least 34 hours of sleep, and using a digital thermometer.
After ovulation, the average temperature rises slightly by 0.51°F and remains elevated until a woman gets her period. The temperature then returns to baseline.
Basal body temperature is not always an accurate measure of ovulation. Several factors, such as stress and alcohol consumption, can affect the measurements.
Women who are single or in a same-sex relationship may choose fertility treatments such as IUI or IVF. These treatments are also an option if one person in a relationship has infertility.
If either partner has any preexisting conditions, such as diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome , they should see a doctor for testing before trying to get pregnant.

Lets face it, women over 40 have a higher chance of taking prescription medications and having health issues than women who are younger than 40. If you are taking medications that could affect your chances of conceiving a baby and having a healthy pregnancy, make sure you talk to your doctor about your different options before proceeding. You may have to make difficult decisions about your health and your babys safety when youre trying to improve your chances of pregnancy over 40.
What advice would you give women coping with infertility? Stay positive, give it time, keep an open mind and consider all options for infertile couples. Again stay positive and optimistic! Consider whats best for you and dont listen to what your family and good friends are saying. Initially, my own mother was really against in vitro fertilization and wouldnt even discuss it with me. I figured in due time she would come around when she was ready. And she is.

This is the most frustrating misconception about having a baby after 40 and the most ridiculous. Women already hold onto enough guilt for arbitrary reasons, says Cowan. Let it go. Trust me, if you had children at 16, 20, 32 or 75, someone would call into question your choices and decisions. The only questions you should ask are if your body is healthy enough, is your wallet fat enough, is your home stable enough, and is your heart big enough. And even the answers to those questions will look different from woman to woman and family to family.
