Its good to talk with your obstetrician and midwife about whether vaginal birth or caesarean birth will be better for you and your twins.

If youre having twins, youre almost twice as likely to have a caesarean birth.

You can discuss with your obstetrician the most appropriate time and way to give birth to your twins.

How To Increase Your Odds

Being pregnant with multiples may carry certain complications and will automatically land you with a high risk classification with your doctor or midwife. Women carrying twins are at an increased risk of developing preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Thats not to say you cant have a totally healthy pregnancy with two babies. It just means you may need to be monitored a bit more closely.

Beyond the risks, a lot of the factors that increase the odds of having twins arent exactly in your control.

So while you can choose to eat more dairy and yams, you cant exactly change your height, race, or family history of multiple births. Purposefully gaining weight before pregnancy isnt necessarily a good idea either.

And if youre banking on having kids late in life to increase your odds of having twins, understand that with age comes reduced fertility and more chances of chromosomal abnormalities.

If youre still stuck on the idea of two, reproductive technology may give you the most control. But experts currently recommend younger women transfer just one embryo per IVF cycle for the best outcome.

Ovulation-enhancing drugs used alone or with IUI require a prescription and may carry some serious risks, like higher chance of ovarian hyperstimulation or ectopic pregnancy.

Trizygotic And Quadrazygotic Babies

If three eggs are fertilized by three separate sperm, this may result in trizygotic triplets. If four eggs are fertilized by four separate sperm, you may get quadrazygotic quadruplets. It is also possible for a person pregnant with high-order multiples to have a combination of twins.

For example, triplets may start as non-identical twins . Then, one of those zygotes splits, leading to a set of identical twins . Altogether, you would have two identical twins and one non-identical twin making up the set of triplets.

If you need help visualizing how this would work: Take two pens, one red and one black. Draw a smiley face with the red pen. Draw another smiley face with the black pen.

Now, from the black pen face, draw two lines down and out, each going to a separate new smiley face. In one big circle, draw a line around one of the red faces and two of the black faces. Those are the tripletstwo identical twins and one sibling twin .

The majority of high-order multiples are made up of non-identical twins.

According to several studies, women pregnant with twins may have a higher level of hCG baseline levels compared to the normal level of hCG in a singleton pregnancy. hCG is the hormone that alerts your body that youre pregnant. hCG levels are highest during early pregnancy and gradually decline as the pregnancy progresses to term. hCG will be at its highest level when an embryo implants into the uterus.

hCG typically reaches 90,000-100,000 mIU/mL for a singleton pregnancy. Your doctor will be paying closer attention to trends instead of numbers due to the fact that theres a wide range of normal hCG levels. As long as hCG rises as expected, your doctor will consider your pregnancy as healthy.

Here is a chart of standard hCG levels for a singleton pregnancy. If your levels are on the higher end of the standard hCG range, this could be a clue that youre having twins.

Will You Conceive Twins If Youre Taking Supplements

Folic acid is a B vitamin. Many doctors recommend taking it before and during pregnancy to reduce the risk for neural tube defects like spina bifida. Prior to becoming pregnant, doctors recommend taking about 400 micrograms of folic acid per day and increasing this amount to 600 micrograms during pregnancy.

There have been some small studies that suggest folic acid may increase the likelihood of conceiving multiples. But there arent any large-scale studies to confirm that this increases your chances for multiples. If you are trying to get pregnant, taking folic acid will help protect your babys brain development.
