What Can Help Me Get Pregnant After Depo

After A Depo Shot Can I Get Pregnant Even If My Normal Period Has Not Returned

I’m Finally pregnant!! After Depo, no period and all.

Yes, you can get pregnant after a Depo shot even if your regular period has not returned. This is because the body can ovulate without a period, too. You normally ovulate for around 2 weeks before your period. However, you will know for sure if you are ovulating when you have a regular monthly cycle and can track your ovulation and periods.

Getting pregnant after stopping Depo Provera shots can take up to 10 months after the last shot. It takes time for you to regain your fertility after the Depo shot. Some women have reported taking up to 2 years time to get pregnant after stopping Depo. If you have been trying to conceive for a year after Depo but without any success, then you should consult your obstetrician who may recommend a fertility specialist.

How Effective Is The Injection

  • The injection is 99.7% effective. This means that if 1000 people used the injection correctly for one year, only 3 people would get pregnant.
  • Because the injection may be used incorrectly, it is closer to 97% effective with typical use.
  • If you use the injection incorrectly , your risk of getting pregnant increases.

Speeding Up Ovulation When Getting Off The Depo Shot

So what can you do to speed up your return to ovulation after getting off the depo shot? Unfortunately, not much. This is always difficult to hear, but the body has to have the time it needs to metabolize normally. There are no cleanses, diets, or supplements that will make the process go faster. In fact, some of those things may have ingredients that could potentially be harmful to a new pregnancy.

What Are The Side Effects Of The Injection

  • You may experience side effects such as decreased libido, headaches, acne, breast* tenderness, and nausea. These side effects may go away over time.
  • You may have unpredictable bleeding during the first few months of use, but this should go away over time. After a year, around half of people will stop getting their periods altogether while they are using the injection.
  • The injection may make you feel hungrier than usual and you could gain weight. In the first year, the average amount of weight gain is 5 pounds. The amount of weight gain increases the longer you use this method.
  • If you have a history of depression or other mood disorders, talk to your doctor to see if the injection is right for you.
  • A return to your full fertility may be delayed after stopping the injection. On average it takes 9 months from your last injection for your normal menstrual cycle to return.
  • The injection can cause you to lose bone mineral density. This means your bones could become weaker and thinner the longer you use the injection. The impact may be greater the younger you are. However, your bones should become stronger and thicker again after you stop using the method.
  • There are things you can do to maintain your bone strength while using the injection, such as not smoking and increasing your calcium intake. Talk to your clinician for more information.

Coming Off Depo The Depo Shot Unique Experience For Everyone

For Love of a Cupcake: Fitness 101

Why do some women take longer than others to return to normal fertility? We dont know for sure. There are likely many factors that contribute to each womans response to a depo provera contraceptive injection, making it hard to pinpoint one specific issue. Just like anything else in life, every patient has a unique experience

One important factor to consider, though, is weight. The FDA includes on the depo label that women of a healthy weight tend to return to normal fertility faster than those who are overweight and obese. This has to do with absorption of progesterone which differs based on each persons metabolism. With the newer, subcutaneous version of depo , the delay in ovulation appears to be substantially decreased, with one study showing return to ovulation for 97% of women who received subcutaneous depo.

Does The Depo Shot Cause Temporary Infertility

The Depo shot suppresses ovulation by increasing the level of progesterone in the body. As a result, it can cause temporary infertility for up to 2 years. Once all the progesterone in the body is eliminated, your fertility will return, and your body will resume ovulating and menstruating. Many women tend to resume their regular monthly cycle 5 months after their last Depo injections. However, it may take up to 22 months for some women to regain their fertility post the last injection.

Another aspect that comes into play with regards to fertility is the weight of the woman. It appears that fertility returns more quickly in women of healthy weight than those who are overweight. Also, it doesnt matter whether youve used the Depo-Provera shot for about 6 months or even for a couple of years your fertility will most likely return in the same time period, in both cases.

What Depo Does To Your Endometrium

One of the documented effects of Depo-Provera is its impact on the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium.

In a natural cycle, hormonal changes that prepare for and trigger ovulation also lead to the thickening of the endometrium. In case a child is conceived during that cycle, the embryo would implant within this rich and nutritive lining, and continue being able to grow. In the absence of conception, the thicker lining that was hence built, now useless, is sloughed off. This results in a normal menstrual period.

In Depo-Proveras documented mechanism of action, we read that progestins such as medroxyprogesterone, the principal artificial hormone contained within the shot, lead to atrophy of the endometrial tissue. They may also suppress new growth and implantation. In other words, the endometrium doesnt grow as it would in a normal, natural cycle, unimpeded by Depo. Instead, it becomes thin and atrophic.

This mechanism explains one of the ways in which Depo acts as a contraceptive, and why a womans period will be suppressed when shes on Depo. In fact, the product label for this drug reports that As women continue using Depo-Provera CI. in clinical studies of Depo-Provera CI, by month 12, amenorrhea was reported by 55% of women, and by month 24, amenorrhea was reported by 68% of women using Depo-Provera CI. As you can see from these statistics, the large majority of women on Depo simply do not have periods.

How Does Depo Provera Work

When a woman has Depo Provera, her body senses the presence of the hormone so that her own hormone production is switched off. Because of this, her ovaries will not release an egg and this is how pregnancy is prevented. This is very similar to how the Pill works. Depo Provera is also sometimes used in the treatment of endometriosis.

Regular Menstrual Cycle Returns

Can I still get pregnant on the Depo-Provera shot?

Having a regular menstrual cycle is the most obvious sign that ovulation has started. Your menstrual cycle lasts from the first day of your period to the first day of your next period. Your cycles are considered regular or normal when they meet the following conditions:

  • Duration: Your periods last 8 days or fewer
  • Flow volume: You lose between 2 to 3 tablespoons of menstrual fluid during each period. Just spotting could be a sign that you’re not ovulating.
  • Frequency: Your periods typically come every 24 to 38 days . This means that from the first day of your last period up to the start of your next period is at least 24 days but no more than 38 days.
  • Regularity: Your cycles are consistent from month to month. For example, your cycle is 27 days long one month, and 29 the next. Cycles that vary in length by more than 7 to 9 days are considered irregular.

Irregular cycles are a possible sign of ovulation problems.Irregular cycles are normal when you’re getting injections and just after you stop the shot.

Can You Get Pregnant Before Your First Period Post

Yes, you can get pregnant before your first post-pregnancy period. Some women have a sterile first period in other words, they dont ovulate during their initial cycle. Others ovulate before having a period, which means they could conceivably go from pregnancy to pregnancy without ever unpacking the tampons.

Since you dont know which will come first, the period or the egg, contraception makes sense if youre hoping to plan your next pregnancy.

Thatâs the strangest reason any thought they could be pregnant. When you stop the shot your body does weird things, thatâs probably all it is. Did the doc give you the shot without doing a pregnancy test? The spotting and stuff should stop since you got the shot. Donât forget you arenât protected for the first 7 days, since you didnât get it on time.

Menstrual Periods On The Depo Shot

Mother

After the first Depo shot, many women will experience irregular or unpredictable bleeding as the body gets used to the synthetic hormone.

For many women on the Depo shot, periods will be light and often disappear after the first few months on the shot .

Other women may experience heavy bleeding, which may last only for the length of a period or may last for weeks on end.

When To See Your Doctor

If your cycles are not coming back or youre not ovulating, and its within two years of your last shot, there is unfortunately very little your doctor can do to help. You just need to wait. Which can be extremely frustrating.

You should see your doctor if:

  • It has been 24 months since your last injection and you are still not ovulating
  • Your cycles are irregular two years after your last injection
  • You dont conceive within 12 months of ovulation returning
  • You have other risk factors or signs of a possible fertility problem

If you are trying to get pregnant and have had one injection you arent likely to get pregnant right away . Remember that the injection lasts 12 weeks. After that, your body still has to adjust to get back to normal. For some women, it can take months to conceive. For me personally, it took 18 months after only one Depo shot to get pregnant.

Depo-Provera is the name of an injectable contraceptive medication, also known as depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or DMPA. One injection of this medication can provide 3 months of dependable birth control. Depo-Provera contains progestin, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Progestin reduces ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to move through the reproductive canal. This way, even if ovulation occurs, the sperm wont be able to reach the egg in the fallopian tube and fertilise it. The Depo injection is required every 90 days, unlike birth control pills that need to be taken daily. This is due to the fact that the injection creates a depot or storage reserve of progestin in the body at the site of the injection.

Once you take the injection, the progesterone level in the body rises steadily and peaks at 3 weeks, after which the level begins to gradually reduce. Around 50% of women who take regular Depo injections for a year will stop menstruating. Once the progesterone levels in the body decrease, the process of ovulation and menstruation begin once again.

When To Stop Depo

If you’re hoping to get pregnant in the near future, you should stop taking Depo-Provera right away. It usually takes several months to conceive after the injectionsbut for some people, regular ovulation might not return for 18 months , according to the manufacturer’s website. If you still need to use birth control in the meantime, consider reversible forms of contraception such as an intrauterine device or condoms until you’re officially ready to start trying.

Can I Conceive While On Depo

You can become pregnant after taking Depo-Provera®. You could become pregnant as soon as 12 to 14 weeks after your last shot. It could also take up to a year or two to conceive after stopping this type of contraception.

When used perfectly, the birth control shot effectiveness is more than 99%, meaning less than 1 out of every 100 people who use it will get pregnant each year.

How Well Does The Birth Control Shot Work

The birth control shot is an effective birth control method. Over the course of a year, about 6 out of 100 typical couples who use the birth control shot will have an accidental pregnancy. The chance of getting pregnant increases if a girl waits longer than 3 months to get her next shot.

In general, how well each type of birth control method works depends on a lot of things. These include whether a person has any health conditions or is taking any medicines that might affect its use. It also depends on whether the method is convenient and whether the person remembers to use it correctly all of the time.

How To Start The Injection

Help me i can
  • If you decide, along with your clinician, that the injection is right for you, they will write you a prescription. You can purchase your dose of the injection at a pharmacy or at PPTs Health Services .
  • If you have your first injection within the first 5 days of getting your period, you only have to wait 24 hours before you are protected from pregnancy.
  • If you have your first injection 6 or more days after getting your period, you are not protected from pregnancy until it has been a full week since your injection. To avoid pregnancy during this time, use a back-up method of birth control like condoms or spermicides.
  • Because of the potential impact on your bone density , your clinician may limit the number of years you can use the injection unless no other method of birth control is right for you.
