Can I Still Get Pregnant With The Implant

Benefits Of The Nexplanon Birth Control Implant

Can you get pregnant while on birth control implant – Can the implant stop working

Although the side effects can vary for everyone, there are several benefits to using Nexplanon:

  • Convenience: With a short visit to your healthcare provider, youll have 3 years of consistent birth control. There are no trips to the pharmacy and no worries about running out of refills.

  • Low maintenance: You wont have to worry about remembering to take your dose. Nexplanon is always working without you having to do anything.

  • Effectiveness: As mentioned earlier, Nexplanon is one of the most effective contraceptives available. Its even more effective than vasectomies. With a failure rate of 0.1%, your risk of pregnancy is very low.

  • Less invasive than other options:Intrauterine devices are also very effective at preventing pregnancy. But some people find the procedure to have them placed a bit invasive. With Nexplanon, you simply need to roll up your shirt sleeve to have the implant inserted. If you wear a short-sleeve shirt, you may not even have to do that.

  • Safe to nurse: If youre considering getting Nexplanon after having a baby, you may be pleased to know that its safe to nurse with the implant. You can have Nexplanon inserted anytime starting 4 weeks after having a baby.

Myth: Infertility And Ectopic Pregnancy

Some women who seek family planning believe that using implants will cause infertility, delay the return of fertility after the implants are removed, or cause ectopic pregnancies .

Fact: Implant doesn’t affect your fertility, and reduces the risk of ectopic pregnancy

Implants stop working once they are removed and their hormones do not remain in the womans body. Implant use does not affect a womans ability to become pregnant, although fertility decreases with a womans age. One major study found that women who have had their implants removed can become pregnant as quickly as women who have stopped using nonhormonal methods.

Implants substantially reduce the risk of ectopic pregnancy. In the United States, the rate of ectopic pregnancy among women who are not using a contraceptive method is 650 ectopic pregnancies per 100,000 women per year. The rate of ectopic pregnancy among women using implants is 6 ectopic pregnancies per 100,000 women per year.

Even in the very rare cases when implants fail and pregnancy occurs, the great majority of these pregnancies are not ectopic. Only 10 to 17 of every 100 pregnancies due to the failure of implants are ectopic.

Is There Anyone Who Should Not Have A Contraceptive Implant

Most women can have an implant fitted but there are a few exceptions. You should not have a contraceptive implant put in if you think you might be pregnant, or if you don’t want to use a contraceptive method that might affect your periods.

You also should not use the contraceptive implant if:

  • You are taking medicines which might interfere with the implant.
  • You have heart or liver disease.
  • You have had breast cancer in the previous five years.
  • You are currently experiencing unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • You have a hereditary blood disorder called porphyria.

There are some conditions which, if you have them, mean that you could use the contraceptive implant, but a different method might be more suitable for you. These include:

  • You are going to have major surgery with prolonged immobilisation.
  • You have an increased risk of blood clots in the veins due to antiphospholipid syndrome, antithrombin deficiency or factor V Leiden.
  • You have previously had a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
  • You have migraines.
  • You have systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • You have gene mutations associated with breast cancer – for example, BRCA1.
  • You have cervical cancer.
  • You have experienced a stroke, angina or heart attack.
  • You have several risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes.
  • You have had jaundice or itching caused by previous use of a hormonal contraceptive.

When Should You Have A Birth Control Implant Fitted

You can have the implant fitted at any time during your menstrual cycle, as long as you arent pregnant. However, bear in mind that it might be worth scheduling your insertion during the first 5 days of your cycle because then youll be immediately protected against unplanned pregnancy.

If its inserted on any other day of your cycle, then youll need to use a back-up method of contraception for seven days .

You can also have the implant inserted after you have given birth its safe to use while breastfeeding. Again, timing matters here. If you have it inserted sooner than 21 days after giving birth, then youre immediately protected from unplanned pregnancy. If its inserted any time after this, youll need to use an additional method of contraception for seven days. Check with your doctor if youre unsure.

Myth: Complications With Method

Some women who seek family planning believe that implants can cause complications in the arm in which they are inserted or that they can travel from the insertion site to other parts of the body.

Fact: Implants cannot travel to other parts of the body

They remain where they are inserted until they are removed. In rare cases, a rod may start to come out of the skin, usually during the first four months since insertion. This typically happens because the implants were not inserted well or because of an infection at the insertion site. If expulsion occurs, the woman should return to the clinic as soon as possible and use a back-up family planning method in the meantime. Providers can replace the rods.

That is what birth control is for! Once you are past any waiting period usually after 7 days, you are then safe and protected from pregnancy. As Kaismama mentioned, pulling out before ejaculation is NOT a form of birth control as men secrete sperm all throughout the sex act, not just during ejaculation, even if he doesnt see anything when he masturbates, it can still happen especially during vaginal intercourse. It only takes one and they are microscopic. But, yes, if you are certain you are both free from infection and you are faithful to each other then once you are protected he can ejaculate inside you and not get you pregnant. Birth controls main action is to prevent ovulation so no egg =no baby!

Thank you very much both of you! I was just double checking. You answers have been helpful, thank you 🙂

There is absolutely no reason you have to prompt us to answer a question. I dearly wish someone would put up big bulletin boards around the country, pulling out is a myth, it is not a method of birth control. There would be no point in him finishing outside of you because he’s already left sperm in you. The implant is birth control and you’re covered.

Great Long Term Protection

Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle when you get the implant, it provides protection beginning either immediately or within a week of the date of insertion.

Nexplanon remains effective for three to four years. You will want to keep track of the scheduled removal date and make an appointment with your doctor to remove it just before the expiration date. Once it expires, it no longer protects against pregnancy. To continue having effective birth control, you can have a new Nexplanon device implanted or begin using another form of birth control.

Contraceptive Implant Removal Stitches

They will put a dressing on the arm, which you should keep on for a few days.

Occasionally, an implant is difficult to feel under the skin, in which case you may be referred to a specialist centre to have it removed with the help of an ultrasound scan. If you want to carry on using an implant, the doctor or nurse can put a new one in at the same time. If you do this there will be no break in your contraceptive protection.

The implant can be taken out at any time if you request removal. It loses its effect immediately after being removed.

How Does The Birth Control Implant Work

The implant is a tiny, thin rod of plastic that a doctor inserts under the skin of your upper arm. The rod releases the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. Progestin thickens the cervical mucus and can stop ovulation. By thickening the cervical mucus, sperm is blocked from fertilizing the egg. And when ovulation is stopped, there is no egg for sperm to fertilize.

Can You Get Pregnant On The Implant In Your Arm

implantimplantyouryougetting pregnantimplantyour armyourepregnancy

. Herein, can you still get pregnant with the implant?

Only five out of 10,000 women who use the implant for a year get pregnant. Pregnancy can‘t happen if there’s no egg to join with sperm. Progestin also thickens the mucus in your cervix, which blocks sperm. For most women who use the implant, periods become fewer and lighter.

Likewise, can the implant stop working? Implants stop working once they are removed and their hormones do not remain in the woman’s body. Implant use does not affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant, although fertility decreases with a woman’s age.

Likewise, how would you know if your pregnant on the implant?

Women who get pregnant while using birth control may notice the following signs and symptoms:

  • a missed period.
  • tenderness or other changes in the breasts.
  • fatigue.
  • How Long Does The Birth Control Implant Last

Like an IUD, the birth control implant is labeled as a long-acting reversible contraceptive or fit and forget method. That means you can have the arm implant inserted and dont have to worry about contraception again for around three years. After that, itll need to be removed and replaced.

That said if for any reason you change your mind, experience side effects, or arent happy with the implant you dont have to wait until the three years are up. Your medical professional can remove it immediately. Then, if you want to get pregnant, you can start trying for a baby right away. In fact, 90% of women find their period returns within 90 days of having the implant removed.

How Does The Implant Work To Prevent Pregnancy

The contraceptive implant works by slowly releasing a hormone called progestogen into your bloodstream which stops you from releasing an egg each month.

It will also thicken the mucus in your cervix, making it much more difficult for sperm to travel, and also thin the lining of your womb making it harder for a fertilised egg to implant. This makes the implant more than 99% effective according to the NHS.

Where Is The Nexplanon Birth Control Implant Located

How long will it take to get pregnant after removing the IUD Mirena?

Where Do I Go To Get A Contraceptive Implant

The contraceptive implant has to be fitted by a specially trained nurse or doctor. This service may be offered at your local GP surgery and, if it is, how to arrange it will probably be explained on their website. Alternatively, a contraception, sexual health or community gynaecology clinic will do this for you. You can find details of services in your area in the UK online.

In the UK the contraceptive implant is free of charge.

All contraceptive services are completely confidential. You will not need an internal examination, a breast examination or a smear before you can have a contraceptive implant. In some cases you may need a pregnancy test to be certain that you are not already pregnant.

Will The Contraceptive Implant Make Me Gain Weight

There is no strong evidence that the contraceptive implant makes women put on weight. Progesterone can do this, but more so when taken in higher doses than you receive from the contraceptive implant. It can also cause fluid retention initially – which will make your weight go up – but this is usually due to fluid rather than fat.

However, many women do feel that the contraceptive implant has made them gain weight. If this happens to you then this weight gain is likely to reverse when you stop using the implant.

The early side-effects of the contraceptive implant are rather like the early symptoms of pregnancy. This is not surprising, since the early symptoms of pregnancy are caused by progesterone. It is not unusual for women to feel they may be pregnant when they first have the implant. A pregnancy test will give you an accurate answer.
