When You Should Take A Pregnancy Test
You should wait to take a pregnancy test until the first day of your missed period. Since HCG is only present once implantation of the egg occurs, there often isnt enough of the hormone to be detected until you miss your menstrual cycle.
Pregnancy tests pick up the hormone secreted after implantation, which usually occurs about two weeks after the sperm meets the egg, says Dr. Culwell. For women who have regular periods, this usually means that HCG can be detected as soon as you miss a period.
This, of course, assumes you have a regular menstrual cycle that can be easily tracked and predicted. If this isnt the case, you may choose to instead track ovulation, or when an egg is released and makes its way to the uterus where it can potentially be fertilized. What If Im Pregnant
If your home pregnancy test shows you are pregnant, always consult your doctor.
Your doctor will confirm the pregnancy, work out your estimated due date, and check your overall health. They will talk to you about any previous pregnancies, your medical history, and any changes you should make to your lifestyle to ensure a healthy pregnancy for yourself and the baby. They will also talk to you about how you would like to be cared for during the pregnancy and where you would like to have the baby.

What About An At
The best time to take an at-home pregnancy test is first thing in the morning and with your first morning urine. This is when the urine is most concentrated and has the highest level of the pregnancy hormone hCG. Try not to get up and go to the bathroom during the night and then do the test as soon as you get up.
Despite what many manufacturers of urine pregnancy tests want you to believe, the urine pregnancy test will usually not become positive in most women until about a week after implantation, around the time of a missed period.

When Should You Go To The Doctor After A Positive Pregnancy Test
This depends on your doctors preferences. Many doctors will want to see first-time moms right away so they can confirm the results of your test and educate you on lifestyle changes and what to expect moving forward.
If this is not your first pregnancy, its more likely that your doctor will wait to see you until youre about eight weeks along.

Most at-home tests state you can test as soon as the first day of your expected period. Its the experience of our nurses and pregnancy educators that when women test within a day or two of their missed periods they may get an inaccurate negative result. We recommend testing after being seven days late.
This is because its considered normal to start your period anytime from seven days before to seven days after its due and still be within the normal time frame. Pregnancy tests work best when the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin has built up in your system. This usually happens around 11 12 days after ovulation. Most women get their period around 14 days after ovulation.

You can carry out most pregnancy tests from the first day of a missed period. If you dont know when your next period is due, do the test at least 21 days after you last had unprotected sex. Some very sensitive pregnancy tests can be used even before you miss a period, from as early as 8 days after conception.

If youre trying to get pregnant, the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after youve missed your period. Why? Because this is really the best way to prevent a false negative result result.
Home pregnancy tests can be used as early as the first day after your first missed period in women with regular/predictable monthly menses. If you have irregular periods, you can administer a test 14 days after intercourse, since you likely cant pinpoint your exact time of ovulation.
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin , which is produced in early pregnancy. The production of this hormone begins slowly and increases as the pregnancy grows. Standard urine pregnancy tests will detect the HCG level when it reaches 20-50 milliunits/milliliters.
If you take a test too soon , the levels of HCG may not be high enough to detect a pregnancy and it could cause a negative result, even though you’re actually pregnant.
I advise my patients to wait at least one day after you miss your period. If you wait one week after a missed period, the chance of a false negative is very low if you have a normal monthly menstrual cycle.
