When You Should Take A Pregnancy Test

You should wait to take a pregnancy test until the first day of your missed period. Since HCG is only present once implantation of the egg occurs, there often isnt enough of the hormone to be detected until you miss your menstrual cycle.

Pregnancy tests pick up the hormone secreted after implantation, which usually occurs about two weeks after the sperm meets the egg, says Dr. Culwell. For women who have regular periods, this usually means that HCG can be detected as soon as you miss a period.

This, of course, assumes you have a regular menstrual cycle that can be easily tracked and predicted. If this isnt the case, you may choose to instead track ovulation, or when an egg is released and makes its way to the uterus where it can potentially be fertilized. An at-home ovulation predictor kit can help you track fertilization.

What If Im Pregnant

If your home pregnancy test shows you are pregnant, always consult your doctor.

Your doctor will confirm the pregnancy, work out your estimated due date, and check your overall health. They will talk to you about any previous pregnancies, your medical history, and any changes you should make to your lifestyle to ensure a healthy pregnancy for yourself and the baby. They will also talk to you about how you would like to be cared for during the pregnancy and where you would like to have the baby.

If the pregnancy was unplanned and youre not sure what to do, its best to take some time to think about your decision. Your doctor can help you work through the options.

What About An At

The best time to take an at-home pregnancy test is first thing in the morning and with your first morning urine. This is when the urine is most concentrated and has the highest level of the pregnancy hormone hCG. Try not to get up and go to the bathroom during the night and then do the test as soon as you get up.

Despite what many manufacturers of urine pregnancy tests want you to believe, the urine pregnancy test will usually not become positive in most women until about a week after implantation, around the time of a missed period.

Had a negative pregnancy test? Find out what the chances are that you could still be pregnant even though you had a negative pregnancy test.

When the pregnancy test first becomes positive has a wide variation and depends on several variables. The following variables determine when the home urine pregnancy test becomes positive:

Exact day of ovulation: A urine pregnancy test is usually positive 4-5 days after implantation. However, it’s the day of ovulation that’s important too, as implantation can only happen if ovulation took place and the egg was fertilized. So if your day of ovulation was later than you thought, then implantation and subsequently the pregnancy test are further delayed, too. That is why it’s really important to keep track of your ovulation day so you can start counting the days to implantation, and eventually the positive pregnancy test.

When Should You Go To The Doctor After A Positive Pregnancy Test

This depends on your doctors preferences. Many doctors will want to see first-time moms right away so they can confirm the results of your test and educate you on lifestyle changes and what to expect moving forward.

If this is not your first pregnancy, its more likely that your doctor will wait to see you until youre about eight weeks along.

Is Second Morning Urine Ok For Pregnancy Test

Hcg Levels And Multiple Pregnancies

One of the ways of diagnosing a multiple pregnancy is by your hCG levels. A high level may indicate you are carrying multiple babies, but it can also be caused by other factors. You will need an ultrasound to confirm that its twins or more.

Levels of hCG in your blood dont provide a diagnosis of anything. They can only suggest that there are issues to look into.

If you have any concerns about your hCG levels, or wish to know more, speak to your doctor or maternity healthcare professional. You can also call Pregnancy, Birth and Baby to speak to a maternal child health nurse on 1800 882 436.

When Is The Earliest I Can Take A Home Pregnancy Test

How do blood pregnancy tests work, and what does less than 2 mean?

Most at-home tests state you can test as soon as the first day of your expected period. Its the experience of our nurses and pregnancy educators that when women test within a day or two of their missed periods they may get an inaccurate negative result. We recommend testing after being seven days late.

This is because its considered normal to start your period anytime from seven days before to seven days after its due and still be within the normal time frame. Pregnancy tests work best when the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin has built up in your system. This usually happens around 11 12 days after ovulation. Most women get their period around 14 days after ovulation.

How Soon After Conception Can You Take A Pregnancy Test

For anyone hoping to become pregnant, time can move slowly and days dominate the calendar. Weve all been told not to wish the time away, but in reality, between the approximate time of ovulation and when your next period is due, it can be very difficult not to wish that the clock would speed up, and the pages of the calendar would fly away as if in a speed-up movie sequence. Instead, we must spend the time waiting and hoping.

During this time the big question on your mind, naturally, is how long after conception can you take a test. In this IVI blog article, we look at some of the factors that can influence the answer to this seemingly simple question.

Other Early Signs And When They Happen

How long after ovulation should you take a pregnancy test?

According to the National Institutes of Health, other early signs and symptoms of pregnancy may include:

Some women also report feeling dizzy or wobbly early on in pregnancy, often when they get up after lying down. This symptom may be due to changes in the blood vessels carrying oxygen to the brain.

Some women cannot explain any specific symptoms or changes in their body, but they intuitively feel that something is different.

They might describe it as not feeling like themselves or feeling as though they are suddenly always a step behind. This may be a sign of fatigue and an indication of hormonal changes.

Types Of Blood Pregnancy Tests

There are 2 types of blood pregnancy tests that a female can undergo after a missed period to confirm pregnancy-

  • Qualitative Blood Serum Test: This pregnancy blood test can only confirm whether or not hCG is present. It basically gives a yes or a no result. The qualitative hCG blood test is nearly as accurate as of the home urine test.
  • Quantitative Blood Serum Test: This pregnancy blood test, also known as the beta hCG test, measures the exact amount of hCG in the females blood. As this test can detect even slight traces of hCG, it is a highly accurate test. A quantitative blood test can also help the doctor to determine if the pregnancy is progressing normally.

When Is The Best Time To Take Pregnancy Test

If youre trying to get pregnant, the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after youve missed your period. Why? Because this is really the best way to prevent a false negative result result.

Home pregnancy tests can be used as early as the first day after your first missed period in women with regular/predictable monthly menses. If you have irregular periods, you can administer a test 14 days after intercourse, since you likely cant pinpoint your exact time of ovulation.

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin , which is produced in early pregnancy. The production of this hormone begins slowly and increases as the pregnancy grows. Standard urine pregnancy tests will detect the HCG level when it reaches 20-50 milliunits/milliliters.

If you take a test too soon , the levels of HCG may not be high enough to detect a pregnancy and it could cause a negative result, even though you’re actually pregnant.

I advise my patients to wait at least one day after you miss your period. If you wait one week after a missed period, the chance of a false negative is very low if you have a normal monthly menstrual cycle.

A positive result typically indicates pregnancy, while a negative result tends to mean that the person is not pregnant. It is more likely for a negative result to be incorrect.

It is important for anyone using a home test to follow the instructions carefully and understand what each color change or symbol indicates.

If a person takes a clinical test, a healthcare professional explains the results.

When To Get A Blood Test

You might be wondering if you should also have a blood test to check if youre pregnant. It is something to consider if you get a positive or negative result. Your doctor may order a test, or you may be thinking about ordering one yourself. Many labs now allow people to order and pay out of pocket for their blood work.

Before you do that, there are a few things you should know. First of all, there are two types of pregnancy blood tests: qualitative and quantitative.

  • Qualitative tests measure whether hCG is present in your blood or urine. They pretty much give a yes or no answer as to whether youre pregnant. Or, more accurately, whether you have enough pregnancy hormone to get a positive result. Home pregnancy tests are qualitative.
  • A quantitative pregnancy test measures the amount of pregnancy hormone in your blood. This is sometimes called a beta hCG test. These are usually done to see how a pregnancy is progressing. For example, your doctor may order a beta hCG test on Monday, and then another test on Wednesday or Thursday. The purpose would be to see whether the level of hCG is increasing as expected or not. This might be important if you had trouble conceiving, have a history of early miscarriage, or an ectopic pregnancy is suspected.

How Early Can I Take A Pregnancy Test

How early you are able to take a pregnancy test will depend on the type of test that you use. All pregnancy tests measure the amount of the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotrophin in your body. This hormone is produced when the egg is fertilized and attaches to the uterine wall, usually six days after fertilization.

Some tests are more sensitive than others and can detect very low levels of hCG in your body. The more sensitive tests could detect hCG as early as four days before your missed period. The sensitivity of a pregnancy test can be found on the packaging and is measured in mIU/ml . Sensitivity can range from 10mIU/ml to 40mIU/ml. The lower the number, the more sensitive the test is and, in turn, will detect pregnancy sooner.

Different Types of Tests

There are two main types of pregnancy tests, urine test and blood test. Both tests detect the amount of hCG in the body.

Urine Test

Urine tests can be purchased at the grocery store or pharmacy and done in the privacy of your home. Results are most accurate when the test is performed when your period is due, or about 2 weeks after you ovulate. However, some can detect pregnancy as early as 4 days before your missed period.

If you get a positive result, you will want to make an appointment with your doctor to have a blood test done to confirm the pregnancy and begin prenatal care.

How Long Do You Wait To Take A Pregnancy Test After ...

Accuracy is the whole point of the number of days you need to wait. As long as you follow the recommended time, home test kits are generally 97% accurate. Some kits come with two tests so if you get a result you were not expecting, you can check again in a couple of days. Its worth knowing that a positive test is almost certainly correct but that false negatives are slightly more likely. If you get a positive test result, you should consult your GP straight away.

A word of caution: some medications can affect the result and make it positive even though you are not pregnant. These include medications for allergies such as promethazine, medications for anxiety and anti-psychotics, diuretics, anticonvulsants and even some medications for infertility. Here too you will find a full list in the instructions in the packet. If in doubt you could ask a pharmacist.

How Soon Can A Blood Test Detect Pregnancy After Conception

A blood pregnancy test can detect or confirm pregnancy by checking the females blood for the presence of the pregnancy hormone hCG . There are 2 types of blood pregnancy tests.

A qualitative hCG test checks for the presence of hCG hormone in the females body. On the other hand, a quantitative hCG test, also known as beta hCG measures the exact amount of hCG in the blood.

Blood pregnancy tests yield a positive result on detecting 5 mIU of hCG hormones in the blood. This level can usually be seen shortly after conception.
