Placental abruptions are typically unpreventable. You can reduce your risk by:
- Not smoking or using drugs.

First Day Of Last Period
Most pregnancies last around 40 weeks , so typically the best way to estimate your due date is to count 40 weeks, or 280 days, from the first day of your last menstrual period .
Another way to do it is to subtract three months from the first day of your last period and add seven days. So if your last period started on April 11, you’d count back three months to January 11 and then add seven days, which means your due date would be January 18.
This is how your doctor will estimate your due date and its a pretty solid target. But remember: Its just as normal to deliver a week or two before or after.

What If You Dont Know Your Lmp Or Your Periods Are Irregular
In the case where you do not know the exact date of your last menstrual period or if you have not had a regular menstrual cycle, the doctor estimates the foetal age through ultrasound imaging. Parameters like the crown-rump length and the foetal sac measurements give an idea about the rough age of the foetus. Based on the foetal age, the expected delivery date is given by the doctor.
Dating Pregnancy Using Ultrasound
Ultrasound in the first trimester is the most accurate method of dating pregnancy. During the scan, baby is measured and the age of pregnancy is estimated by comparing baby’s size against recorded averages. If there is a significant difference between gestational age according to LMP and gestational age according to the ultrasound, you may be given a new gestational age and due date based on the ultrasound measurements.
Your pregnancy may also be dated by ultrasound measurement if an LMP formula was not appropriate for your pregnancy for any reason. LMP formulas are not suitable in several situations including the following: LMP is not known or is not certain, birth control pills were taken in the two months before LMP, the menstrual cycle is irregular, you are carrying multiples .
Although the age of pregnancy based on ultrasound measurements is more accurate than the age of pregnancy based on LMP, both are estimates and not definitive statements.

The common idea of 10 months of pregnancy came about because obstetricians traditionally counted pregnancy in months that were exactly 4 weeks long. Using these 4-week months, an average 40 week pregnancy lasts 10 months.
Unfortunately, this does not line up well with the calendar months we use in everyday life, most of which are approximately 4 and a half weeks long. When measuring pregnancy by calendar months, an average pregnancy lasts about nine months plus one week .
Over the course of a typical pregnancy there is therefore a discrepancy of approximately one month between the two systems, both of which are counting “months.”
The correct way of measuring pregnancy avoids this confusion since the word “month” is not used at all. Any official reference to pregnancy dates is always in weeks or trimesters.
Note: Our months are calendar months but in the pregnancy world a month may be any of the following:

- 5 weeks
- A lunar month

When Will My Baby Be Born

If You Are 23 Weeks Pregnant Then You Are
Normally, pregnancy is counted with weeks and not months. For first-time moms, probably like you, youd find this very confusing. Especially if you are 23 weeks pregnant, the number 23 is too much to think in weeks when you can just convert it to months.
If you would think of it, in 1 month there are 4 weeks. So if you are currently in your 23rd week, you are in the 6th month of your pregnancy. Why? Lets break that down. Take a look at the figure below to fully understand it. Every trimester there is a corresponding month and week.

Does Pregnancy Last For Nine Months
The total time period of pregnancy is considered 40 weeks from LMP. This superficially looks like ten months, assuming each month is made of four weeks. However, in this calculation, it has to be remembered that the actual fertilisation and conception happens two weeks after the last day of the menstrual period. Additionally, some of the months have 31 days and some have 30 days, except February. As an average, every month has 4.4 weeks and not 4 weeks exactly. Based on this, the effective pregnancy period from conception to delivery which is taken as 40 weeks, translates to nine months and one week.
