Check Those Iron Levels
Its time to start pumping iron. The supplement kind, that is. Consuming iron supplements and non-heme iron, which comes from plant-based foods, may decrease the risk of ovulatory infertility.
A recent 2019 study concluded that heme iron had no effect on fertility and non-heme only had some benefit for women who already had iron deficiency.
More evidence is needed to confirm whether iron supplements should be recommended to all women, especially if iron levels are already healthy. But making sure your iron levels are solid with your doctor is a good step.
Non-heme iron sources are more difficult for your body to absorb, so try taking them with foods or drinks high in vitamin C to increase absorption.
Alcohol consumption can negatively affect fertility. However, its unclear how much alcohol is needed to cause this effect.
One 2016 study found that having more than

Starting with your current caloric intake, subtract 1000 calories from that total. This is the number of calories you will need to consume every day to lose 2 pounds a week. Obese women also are at a higher risk for developing pre-eclampsia , gestational diabetes and sleep apnea.
Male obesity can also affect conceiving a child. Obesity in men has been linked to changes in testosterone levels and other hormones, which are important for reproduction. Low sperm motility and count are also more prevalent in overweight and obese men than in a man of normal weight.
Challenge: Eat When Hungry And Stop When Satisfied
If the hunger is not the problem, then eating is not the solution
Mindful eating will help you to end triggers and habits that cause you to overeat. Let’s say you get home from work and you are STARVING. You cant possibly wait until your salmon and broccoli are ready and so you eat half a block of cheese and a box of crackers before you even wash the broccoli. After finishing dinner you feel bloated and stuffed. If this sounds familiar, it’s time to reprogram your brain and recognize that we are no longer living in the stone age when we didn’t know when our next meal would happen.
Here are two ways to practice mindful eating:
- First, recognize that hunger is not an emergency. Next time your brain says, Im hungry! Must eat now! take 3-5 deep breaths, drink some water and gently remind yourself that this is not an emergency and that you will have your meal soon.
- Second, to stop eating when you are full, put your food or fork down in between bites and talk to yourself. Ask yourself, ‘am I still hungry?’. If you are not, stop eating and put the food away.

These carbs are absorbed very quickly, causing spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. Refined carbs also have a high glycemic index . The GI tells you if a carbohydrate-dense food will raise your blood sugar significantly.
Insulin is chemically similar to ovarian hormones. These hormones help our eggs mature. Consistent elevated insulin can cause the body to produce fewer reproductive hormones because it thinks it doesnt need it. This can contribute to a lack of egg maturation and ovulation.
Given that PCOS is associated with high insulin levels, refined carbs can make it even worse.

Men Weight And Fertility
Research is finding that male fertility may also suffer when a man is overweight. However, a direct connection is less clear, and some studies contradict the findings of others. One study found that men who were overweight were more likely to have lower sperm counts and poorer sperm motility.

Its important to keep eating well and doing moderate physical activity after the birth. This will give you more energy to care for your new baby.
There are a couple of other ways to get to a healthy weight.
BreastfeedBreastfeeding combined with a healthy diet can help with weight loss after birth because it burns extra calories. Breastmilk is all your baby needs up until around six months.
Plan for weight loss Its a good idea to plan for losing weight once youve recovered from birth.
In the early weeks after birth, you can begin by just walking with your baby in a pram, baby carrier or sling. You could also join a community-run or private weight loss group or use a gym that offers child care. Many early childhood centres run free walking or exercise groups for new mothers.
Your GP, dietitian or child and family health nurse could help with ideas and contacts, or you could look online for weight loss or exercise groups near you.
