When looking at sperm donors found through a clinic or sperm bank, youll also hear terms like semi-open and anonymous donor arrangements. This refers to the ability to have contact between your future donor-conceived child and the donor.
The general advice these days favors semi-open arrangements because it allows at least one contact between the donor-conceived child and the sperm donor.
Completely anonymous donor arrangements are becoming less common, and are in fact illegal in some countries.
If you decide to use someone you knowalso known as a known donorbe aware that there are many legal and psychological intricacies involved.
There have been cases where known sperm donors later decided to sue and attempt to get parental rights, and there have been cases when women who have used a known sperm donor attempted to sue the donor for child support payments.
These issues have occurred even with contracts being signed before the donor insemination took place.

Success Rates For Iui
The same study found a 40.5 percent success rate for IUI after six treatments.
According to an article in the Journal of Andrology , pregnancy success rates for IUI are higher after six cycles of IUI compared with the same amount of ICI cycles. This is likely due to the more direct placement and preparation of highly concentrated sperm. According to the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, preparing a sperm sample in a laboratory increases the concentration of sperm by 20 times.

Technically? Yes. Realistically? Not so much.
Understand that biologically speaking, the momentum of ejaculation is no accident.
In other words, just having fresh sperm around isn’t the whole picture: the mobility of sperm, and sperm making their way into the cervix is important. This is why when people do self-inseminate, they use mechanisms to move the ejaculate up into the vagina.
So, your friend becoming pregnant this way is unlikely. That’s a pretty good thing, particularly if she’s using someone as a sperm donor who hasn’t consented to be that or a Daddy, because that’s really not okay to do to someone without their consent, no matter their gender.
Obviously, too, if she’s not really ready to be someone’s Mom , she shouldn’t be trying stuff like this. If she’s feeling this way because of conflicts or disagreements in the relationship, or conflicts with herself, she’s going to want to address those and work them out productively.

Male Partner With Severe Male Infertility
Infertile couples facing severe male infertilityazoospermia or extremely low sperm countmay consider donor sperm.
For some of these couples, IVF with ICSI and TESE or TESA may be another option they consider before moving onto donor sperm. TESE stands for testicular sperm extraction, and TESA stands for testicular sperm aspiration.
TESE involves testicular biopsy, while TESA involves aspirating sperm cells from the testicles.
The sperm cells mature in the lab until they’re ready to inseminate an egg via IVF-ICSI, wherein a sperm cell is directly injected into an oocyte.
However, this isnt an option for all couples. For some men, even TESE and TESA cant retrieve viable sperm cells for IVF.
Another issue with IVF-ICSI with TESE/TESA is it can be prohibitively expensive. Donor insemination isnt cheap, but its significantly less costly than IVF-ICSI with TESE/TESA.
Another reason why a couple may choose donor sperm over pursuing IVF-ICSI with TESE/TESA is the increased risk of passing on male infertility to a male child. Some intended parents are okay with this risk, while others are not.
How It Is Performed
- The semen has to be collected in a clean and sterilised cup or bowl. It is important that a condom is not used for this purpose as it can contain certain chemicals that are spermicidal.
- The syringe plunger has to be pulled out, then the air pushed out of it. Now that a vacuum has been produced, the tip of the syringe is dipped in the bowl with the semen in it.
- The semen is sucked as much as possible through the syringe. If required, some medical saline is added in the bowl to extract any remaining semen.
- Any air bubbles formed in the syringe are removed by gently tapping on the side. The air is slowly pushed out by pressing the plunger gently.
- Now, the woman places herself in a comfortable position, as she will not be moving much for the next thirty minutes.
- A thick pillow will be kept below her waist so her hips are at a higher position than her upper body.
- The syringe is gently inserted into her vagina, and she starts injecting the semen as slowly as she possibly can. This is because the semen can escape the vagina if she sprays it too fast.
- Once all the syringe is entirely emptied, she can carry on with her daily activities.

Artificial Insemination At Home: Intracervical Insemination
A simpler artificial insemination method, intracervical insemination imitates natural intercourse. Unwashed, liquified semen is loaded into a syringe specially designed for ICI. Then it’s inserted inside of the vagina and slowly emptied near the cervix. A woman should lie on her back during the procedure and a half hour afterwards. If all goes well, the sperm will travel to the fallopian tubes and form a pregnancy.
ICI can be conducted at home or a medical center. The success rate ranges from about 5% to 30% per cycle and it may be more efficient if the woman places a sponge cap over the cervix for several hours afterwards to hold semen in place. Washing the sperm may also increase effectiveness. Note that ICI is sometimes called Intravaginal insemination .

Finding The Right Time To Inseminate
The most fertile time of your cycle is on average between day 11 and day 21, from the first day of your LMP. Every womans body is different, so ovulation may occur on a different day each month and at different times during your cycle. Make sure to track your ovulation carefully.
When using an Ovulation Predictor Kit , you are looking to get a positive result for your LH surge. This is typically 36 hours prior to ovulation, but it can also be between 24 48 hours. The days between your LH surge and ovulation are your most fertile time for home insemination with frozen sperm.
Your egg drops during ovulation and lives for only 24 hours. Chances of conception drop down to 0% the day after ovulation, so be sure to understand the right timing for your body.

What To Expect During The Procedure
Your doctor will use ovulation kits, ultrasound, or blood tests to make sure you’re ovulating when you get artificial insemination. Then, your partner will need to provide a sample of their semen. The doctor will suggest that your partner avoid sex for 2 to 5 days before the procedure to help make sure their sperm count is high.
If you live close to the clinic, your partner may be able to collect a semen sample at home. If not, they’ll do this in a private room. The reason it helps if you live close to the doctor’s office is that the sperm must be “washed” in a laboratory within 1 hour of ejaculation.
The process of “washing” the sperm in a lab removes chemicals in the semen that may cause discomfort for a woman, and raises the chances of getting pregnant. Technicians liquefy the sperm at room temperature for 30 minutes and add a harmless chemical to separate out the most active sperm. They use a centrifuge to collect the best sperm.
Those are placed in a thin tube called a catheter and put through your vagina and cervix into the uterus.
Artificial insemination is short and relatively painless. Many women describe it as similar to a Pap smear. You may have cramping during the procedure and light bleeding afterward. Your doctor will probably have you lie down for about 15 to 45 minutes to give the sperm a chance to get to work. After that, you can get back to your usual activities.
