What Lifestyle Changes Can I Make While Im Pregnant To Improve Migraine

Can you use CBD while pregnant?

Lifestyle measures and behavioral treatment options are important for everyone with migraine, but even more so if youre pregnant, because we want to avoid medications as much as possible, says Starling.

One thing I always discuss with people are the SEEDS for success in migraine management, which is a mnemonic that reminds people of things they can do to improve migraine, she says.

  • S stands for good sleep hygiene. That means going to sleep around the same time and waking up around the same time every day, says Starling.
  • E is exercising, and she recommends about 20 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three days a week.
  • E stands for eating regular meals, so not fasting or skipping meals, says Starling. This is really important: Try to eat multiple small meals throughout the day.
  • D is short for dehydration, or preventing dehydration, by drinking lots of water throughout the day, says Starling.
  • S stands for stress response or stress management. Not stress reduction necessarily, but more managing the way that you respond to stress, she says.

There are also some behavioral treatment options that have proven to be beneficial in evidence-based, randomized, controlled trials. These include biofeedback training, cognitive behavioral therapy training, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques, says Starling.

Sleep When The Baby Sleeps

Not getting enough sleep can wreak havoc on your body. One of the symptoms of being overly tired is a headache. Its your bodys way of trying to make you both slow down and lie down.

Unfortunately, thats a bit easier said than done when youre a mother. If you can, ask your partner to keep the baby while youre asleep.

Consider pumping your breastmilk so that someone else can feed the baby while you rest. You can also pick up a co-sleeper to make nighttime feedings easier. You dont even have to get out of bed to feed the baby!

As soon as your baby falls asleep, consider taking a nap yourself. The laundry will still be there when you wake up.

Headache In Pregnancy: What’s In The New Acog Guidelines

Randy Dotinga

May 11, 2022

SAN DIEGO If a medical professional is trying to figure out the best medical treatment for a pregnant woman with headache, it may be helpful to review data from randomized clinical trials . Well, make that data from the RCT. There’s just been one, Northwestern Medicine obstetrician-gynecologist Catherine Stika, MD, told colleagues at the annual clinical and scientific meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Only a single efficacy RCT has examined headache in pregnancy, said Stika. “Overall, we have very limited data in pregnancy to tell us exactly what to do,” she added.

But ob.gyns. aren’t entirely in the dark, according to medical specialists who spoke at the session. Expert opinion and fetal safety data offer insight into the best treatments, as does a new ACOG clinical practice guideline on headaches during pregnancy and post partum that was coauthored by the speakers.

And there’s some good news: Pregnancy itself is often a good treatment for headaches.

But simply discontinuing every headache treatment during pregnancy may not be the right approach, Mercer said. Instead, she said, consider the benefits and risks.

Divalproex sodium and topiramate must be avoided because of fetal risk, she said. “In fact, we will prefer that people stop these medications before they discontinue their contraception if they’re planning on getting pregnant,” she said.

Mercer and Stika report no disclosures.

I Have Heard That Caffeine May Not Be Safe Is That True

Caffeine has been an ingredient in both OTC and prescription drug products for many decades. Medical research has demonstrated that caffeine is a safe and effective addition to the combination of acetaminophen and aspirin in medications for relief of pain when used at the appropriate dose. The acetaminophen-aspirin-caffeine combination is approved and clinically proven to be effective and well-tolerated for the relief of both migraine and tension-type headache pain, but as always, you should follow package directions. The recommended dose of this product contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Limit the use of caffeine-containing medications, foods, or beverages while taking this product because too much caffeine may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and, occasionally, rapid heartbeat. Your risk is almost same as anyone else who travels that journey. Treatment is usually not warranted in most cases if there’s no predisposition to formation of blood clots and no history as well. You should be fine. Just move your feet every 30 minutes while you’re travelling. That should be enough.

My pleasure. Stay well.

So Can You Take Excedrin While Pregnant

Lets start with that last ingredient acetaminophen. Experts have agreed that acetaminophen is entirely safe for someone to take while pregnant, unless of course they are allergic.

The biggest problem comes when we consider aspirin. Aspirin has had links to many conditions that a newborn might have such as Reyes syndrome. This is a condition which is pretty rare but possible and it affects the babys liver function and brain function causing serious damages.

Its surprising though that the FDA have classified aspirin in a category C for people who are pregnant, but the truth of the matter is that the risks will certainly outweigh any benefits, and even though its at a category C, you still need to be wary of using it while pregnant.

In fact, most doctors will agree that you should probably avoid aspirin while pregnant if you can help it, and will very rarely offer it for use. The FDA even increases the category level when a person is in their third trimester to a category D.

This suggests that the risk to the babys development is very real and quite high so as a rule, its better to avoid any products that have aspirin in them whilst you are pregnant.

I Fall Asleep Easily But Often Wake Up In The Middle Of The Night With My Mind Racing Do I Have Insomnia

Possibly. Insomnia covers difficulty getting to sleep as well as waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep. While even good sleepers awaken five to 15 times each night, most fall asleep within a few seconds and forget that they have been awake. Studies show that at least half of all sleep problems are caused by such issues as marital stress, job stress, anxiety, or depression. If you are having trouble falling back to sleep, pay attention to the thoughts running through your mind. They may help you find the cause of your problem.

How To Treat Patients For Migraine During Pregnancy

Its important for providers who treat women during their reproductive years to be aware of treatment options that are safe during pregnancy. Many women with migraine who are pregnant or considering pregnancy stop taking their migraine medications and assume they dont have safe treatment options availablebut this is simply not true.

Women typically start to experience migraine attacks during adolescence, which aligns with when menstruation begins. The highest incidence of migraine is between ages 18 and 44, which are also the year many women experience pregnancy. The rate of migraine among women is three times higher than it is for men. Because of these figures, it is believed that fluctuations in estrogen levels play a role in migraine development.

Dr. Tracy Grossman, an obstetrician-gynecologist who has completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine and earned a masters in neuroscience, shares the range of treatment options available for pregnant patients with migraine.

Active Ingredients In Excedrin

Excedrin has three active ingredients. Keep in mind that these are standard Excedrin tablets. Other varieties may include additional ingredients.

This is the same ingredient that is found in Tylenol. Some off-brand versions of Tylenol are simply sold as acetaminophen. It helps to relieve pain, including pain from headaches.

This ingredient can make Excedrin useful for treating other aches and pains as well. Acetominophen is generally considered safe for breastfeeding women as long as it is used in moderation.

Excedrin contains a very low dosage of caffeine. Each tablet only has 65 mg of caffeine in it. Its considered safe for breastfeeding mothers to consume up to 300 mg of caffeine daily. This means that taking two Excedrin tablets is not going to put your baby at risk.

The third main ingredient found in Excedrin is aspirin. This ingredient is the one that is a problem for breastfeeding mothers.

Aspirin is classified as a salicylate medication. These types of medication pose a risk to infants. Although it is rare, it can cause a condition known as Reyes syndrome.

Reyes syndrome can result in swelling of the brain and lungs. This is particularly dangerous for infants and often results in infant death.

A small dose of aspirin might not cause this. You may be able to take Excedrin and see no adverse effects. However, every time that you take aspirin its like rolling a dice.

Which Excedrin Is Safe During Pregnancy

  • Excedrin Extra Strength, for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains. This could be helpful if you have a headache, toothache, muscle aches, or a cold.
  • Excedrin Migraine, for, yep, migraines.

These two both contain acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine.

Particularly because they include aspirin, you should talk to your doctor before using them, and try to avoid taking them after 20 weeks.

Then there is:

  • Excedrin Tension Headache, for head, back, and shoulder pain from tension and stress. This is just acetaminophen and caffeine. Because it doesnt include aspirin, its less risky, but should still be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

And finally:

  • Excedrin PM Headache, which helps to relieve aches and pains and give you a good nights sleep. It too contains acetaminophen and aspirin but also includes something called diphenhydramine citrate, which is an antihistamine. Diphenhydramine citrate can be okay to take during pregnancy in small doses, if, as the FDA says, the benefits outweigh the risks. And the same warning applies to the other ingredients.

So, bottom line? The safest of the Excedrin products is probably Excedrin Tension Headache, as it doesnt contain aspirin.

But still, this path is better traveled with your doctor.
