Preparing For Embryo Transfer
An embryo transfer requires preparation of the uterus. The Surrogate will need to take several medications that will help her body build a thick uterine lining to receive the embryo.
There may be some differences during this part of the process based on whether a fresh or frozen cycle is performed. Fresh cycles may be a bit more complicated because the cycles of the Intended Mother or Egg Donor and Surrogate need to be coordinated.Syncing the menstrual cycles of these involved parties is typically facilitated with contraceptive pills and Lupron injections.
Once the Intended Mother or Egg Donor and Surrogates cycles are regulated, the Surrogate will start on estrogen. This typically occurs about the same time ovulation is being induced in the Intended Mother or Egg Donor. Just before the egg retrieval, the Surrogate will start on progesterone to continue preparing her body for implantation. If the embryos are frozen, the medications and transfer will be coordinated with the Surrogates cycle.

Health Checks And Medications
It all begins with a baseline appointment, in which the surrogate undergoes an internal ultrasound that evaluates the lining of her uterus.
The gestational surrogate may have been prescribed medications for a while, or she may be required to report with the first day of her period. Regardless of her medication protocol, she is required to have an ultrasound and blood test before beginning the embryo transfer medication to stimulate the growth of her uterine lining.
The goal of this initial ultrasound is to examine her lining to ensure that it is thin and appears as it should at the start of a menstrual cycle. Surrogacy Legislation In Victoria
Under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008, the following requirements apply:
The commissioning parent/s:
- must be infertile or unable to carry a baby or give birth, or there is a likely medical risk to the mother or baby if pregnancy is carried out.

- must be at least 25 years old
- must have previously been pregnant and given birth to a live child
