A Note To Those Considering Being A Surrogate
There are various ways that being a surrogate may make sense in your lifestyle. You may find the money appealing or feel fulfilled giving a couple something they may not be able to achieve without your help.
Still, its a big decision. The Family Inceptions Agency outlines a few things to consider before applying to be a surrogate.
- Youll need to meet all the minimum requirements including those regarding age, health status, reproductive history, and psychological status that may vary by agency.
- Youll need to be OK with giving up control during the pregnancy. While its your body, what happens during the pregnancy isnt entirely up to you. This involves things like testing that you may not choose for yourself but that the intended parents may wish to undergo.
- Youll also need to think about the process itself. Getting pregnant via IVF takes a number procedures and medications. Consider how youll feel about taking injectable and oral drugs and hormones.
- Youll want to consider if your own family is complete. Do you want more children? Understand that with each pregnancy and with advancing age, more risks for complications can arise that might impact your fertility.
- Youll need to get input from the rest of your family as well. How does your partner feel about surrogacy? What about your children?
There arent necessarily right or wrong answers to questions you need to ask yourself these are just things to consider. Surrogacy can be a wonderful process and gift.

Preparing For Embryo Transfer
An embryo transfer requires preparation of the uterus. The Surrogate will need to take several medications that will help her body build a thick uterine lining to receive the embryo.
There may be some differences during this part of the process based on whether a fresh or frozen cycle is performed. Fresh cycles may be a bit more complicated because the cycles of the Intended Mother or Egg Donor and Surrogate need to be coordinated.Syncing the menstrual cycles of these involved parties is typically facilitated with contraceptive pills and Lupron injections.
Once the Intended Mother or Egg Donor and Surrogates cycles are regulated, the Surrogate will start on estrogen. This typically occurs about the same time ovulation is being induced in the Intended Mother or Egg Donor. Just before the egg retrieval, the Surrogate will start on progesterone to continue preparing her body for implantation. If the embryos are frozen, the medications and transfer will be coordinated with the Surrogates cycle.

Health Checks And Medications
It all begins with a baseline appointment, in which the surrogate undergoes an internal ultrasound that evaluates the lining of her uterus.
The gestational surrogate may have been prescribed medications for a while, or she may be required to report with the first day of her period. Regardless of her medication protocol, she is required to have an ultrasound and blood test before beginning the embryo transfer medication to stimulate the growth of her uterine lining.
The goal of this initial ultrasound is to examine her lining to ensure that it is thin and appears as it should at the start of a menstrual cycle. Doctors will examine her ovaries to make sure that there isn’t a follicle developing. This is done to ensure that the embryo will be transferred at the most optimal time for implantation.
The surrogate will also have her blood tested to check her estrogen and progesterone levels- two critical hormones during conception and pregnancy. These tests will determine whether or not the surrogate is at her “baseline”, and give the doctors guidance on what steps she should take if abnormal levels are detected. At this stage, the laboratory will also likely draw repeat STI tests to ensure that the results are confirmed before the transfer.
How Does A Surrogate Mother Get Pregnant
Whether you areinterested in becoming a surrogate motheror growing your family through surrogacy, the most common question that arises at the beginning of the process is: How does a surrogate mother get pregnant? Here you will find a summary of the process, so you can clearly understand it from beginning to end.
Gestational Mother As Birth Mother
According to Jackson the outcome of another case informed proposals for the regulation of gestational surrogacy. M.R. and D.R. v An tArd Chlaraitheoir and Others was a case of altruistic gestational surrogacy . A sister of the genetic mother offered to become a gestational surrogate to an embryo formed by her sister and her husband, because her sister was medically unable to carry the embryo to term. The sister/surrogate delivered the child to the genetic parents as planned. The Register of Births, however, refused to register the child as requested because in Irish law, it is the birth mother who is the lawful mother. The couple took their case to the High Court, which ruled in favor of the commissioning couple on the grounds of genetic parentage. The state appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which ruled against the commissioning couple on the grounds that there was an irrebuttable presumption attached to the birth mother mater semper certa est . The Supreme Court said that it was not in a position to make surrogacy law, because that was a legislative matter for the Oireachtas. Justice Clarke dissented, arguing that the genetic mother and the gestational mother both had characteristics of mothers, and it was difficult to choose between them.
Why Gestational Carrier Over Surrogate
Most people use gestational surrogacy and a gestational carrier to avoid the emotional and legal complications that often come with traditional surrogacy. Since surrogates are biologically related to the children produced through traditional surrogacy, they are more likely to get attached. They may also fight for custody or refuse to give the children to the intended parents post birth. Because of all the legal complications, traditional surrogacy is illegal across the United States and is no longer recognized.
Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Oklahoma only offers gestational surrogacy because we believe it is a better option for both the intended parents and the woman assisting them through the surrogacy process. Do Surrogate Mothers Contribute Dna
Gestational carriers do not contribute any DNA during the IVF process. Instead, the intended parent contribute their own egg, or a donor egg is chosen by the intended parents in a separate process.
How does a baby not have surrogate mother DNA?
Through the use of donor egg and sperm, the advances of modern medicine have allowed for the gestational surrogacy process to completely protect the surrogate by ensuring that she will not share any DNA with the child.
What DNA does a surrogate baby have?
It depends on the process used by the intended parents. Some intended parents and able to use their own egg and sperm, while others need one or both donated. Either way, there is no surrogate-baby DNA connection.
How To Find A Surrogate
Some people find a friend or family member whos willing to serve as a surrogate. Others turn to surrogacy agencies in the United States or abroad to find a good match. Agencies first screen candidates to ensure they meet the criteria associated with the process. Then they cross-match your own wants/needs to find the best situation for your family.
Dont know where to start? Nonprofit group Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy was created to review and maintain ethical issues surrounding egg donation and surrogacy. The group maintains a member directory that may help you find agencies in your area.

Choosing the person who will carry your baby is a big deal, no doubt. She may be someone you know, like a sister or trusted friend or even, in some cases, your mom. Or you can go through an agency that will match you with a carrier. Agencies consider the medical and pregnancy history of a prospective carrier, as well as her emotional wellbeing. They also do lab workups, and may have other requirements, like a limit on past cesarean sections, says Dr. Cackovic. Carriers are heavily screened, he explains, in a process thats similar to selecting an egg donor.
Why Is The Surrogate Screening Process So Thorough
We want to make sure that you are able to complete a healthy and successful surrogacy journey, for both you and the baby. Our screening process is very thorough because we only want you to invest months of time and emotion into matching with intended parents and moving forward in a process if a fertility center is likely to agree that you can be a healthy and successful surrogate.

Surrogacy Legislation In Victoria
Under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008, the following requirements apply:
The commissioning parent/s:
- must be infertile or unable to carry a baby or give birth, or there is a likely medical risk to the mother or baby if pregnancy is carried out.
- must be at least 25 years old
- must have previously been pregnant and given birth to a live child
- must not use her eggs in the surrogacy arrangement.
It is preferred that the surrogate has already completed her family but this is not a legal requirement.
All parties, including the commissioning parent/s and the surrogate and the surrogate’s partner must have received counselling and legal advice.
Some clinics also require the donor involved in the arrangement to comply with these 2 requirements.
There Are A Variety Of Reasons A Couple Might Need A Carrier
For example, the woman may not have a uterus after a hysterectomy to treat a disease like cancer. Or she might have suffered recurrent miscarriages, or tried several cycles of IVF that were unsuccessful. Or she could have a health problem that makes pregnancy dangerous, such as pulmonary hypertension, says Michael Cackovic, MD, an obstetrician specializing in maternal fetal medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Homosexual male couples who are using donor eggs also turn to a gestational carrier to have a child.

I Want To Be A Surrogate Mother Now What
If you meet the qualifications to become a surrogate and are ready to commit to the required legal process and medical procedures, you are ready to take the preliminary steps in the surrogacy process:
- Determine the type of surrogacy you are interested in. There are two types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is the biological mother of the child she carries, and her egg is fertilized using intrauterine insemination. In gestational surrogacy, the child is not related to the surrogate mother and the fertilized embryo is implanted using in vitro fertilization.
- Choose a surrogacy professional. You may choose to work with a surrogacy agency or an independent surrogacy attorney, depending on the services and support you will need. Remember that the process and requirements for surrogacy may vary based on the professional you choose to work with, so do your research and be sure to select a surrogacy professional that meets your individual needs.
- Develop a surrogacy plan. Once you have selected a surrogacy agency and completed the screening process, your surrogacy specialist will work with you to outline your goals and desires for your surrogacy. You will make important decisions about the types of intended parents youd like to work with, your comfort level with carrying multiples, and more. This surrogacy plan will help guide the remainder of your surrogacy experience.
