When Can You Get A Positive Pregnancy Test Result
Home pregnancy tests look for human chorionic gonadotrophin in your urine. This is produced after the egg implants, but not at detectable levels until 6 to 14 days after fertilization. Your most reliable results will be starting on the day of your missed period, since all cycles are unique.
You can purchase a test at supermarkets, drugstores, or online. Follow all instructions and follow up with your doctor if you have a positive result or if you have a negative result but your period does not start.
In some cases, you may want to go in and have a blood draw, which can detect lower levels of the pregnancy hormone hCG.
To recap, the following things need to happen to achieve pregnancy:
Above all else, you can increase your chances of pregnancy each month by gaining a better understanding of the menstrual cycle and pinpointing your fertile window. You can have sex a million times, but if youre not in the right part of your cycle, it wont result in pregnancy.
Sex as early as 5 days before ovulation can lead to conception, but the chances are highest with sex the day immediately before the egg is released.
While Every Person Is Different Here’s When You Can Tentatively Expect Breast Tenderness Nausea Fatigue Frequent Urination And Other Signs Of Pregnancy
You received a positive pregnancy test, and now you’re waiting for the telltale signs you’re expecting. So when do you start having pregnancy symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, and fatigue?
As it turns out, every person is different, says Marra Francis, M.D., an OB-GYN in Woodlands, Texas, and an author of the Mommy MD Guides. Some never experience the typical early signs of pregnancy, while others feel immediate changes in their body. And you can’t use previous pregnancies as a guide either symptoms might appear at different points in every gestation, adds Dr. Francis.
To give you a basic guideline, we rounded up nine common early pregnancy symptoms and their typical start time. Remember to take this estimated schedule with a grain of salt, though, and ask your doctor about any concerns.
How Concentrated Your Urine Is
Pregnancy tests used to recommend using your first pee of the morning, when more hCG is present. But now they’re sensitive enough to work at any point in the day, although it does help if you’re taking the test early.
Similarly, drinking too much liquid beforehand could dilute your urine and affect the results.

What Are The Advantages Of Using A Home Pregnancy Test
There are quite a few advantages to using a home pregnancy test, including:
- Pregnancy tests are inexpensive.
- Theyre easy to use.
- Home tests provide results quickly.
According to pregnancy kit manufacturers, most at-home pregnancy tests are 97% to 99% accurate when you use them as instructed. Positive results can be trusted, but you can get a falsely negative result very early in pregnancy.
Blood tests tend to be more expensive and, for many women, the wait for an appointment can be difficult. Home tests allow you to quickly know if youre pregnant shortly after conception.
Are All Home Pregnancy Testing Methods The Same
Most brands of at-home pregnancy tests are reliable. Although the exact testing method of different pregnancy tests can differ from one type to the other, they all look for hCG in your body. Some tests might do this through urine while others look for the pregnancy hormone in your blood. If youre using an at-home test, most will give you the same result. The difference with your at-home tests will be the sensitivity of the test. Some might be more sensitive than others and produce a positive result detect hCG in your urine sooner than others. For the most accurate reading, its still recommended that you wait till youve missed your period. At that point, all tests should be accurate.

When Does A Pregnancy Ultrasound Determine Sex
Your babys sex isnt visible on an ultrasound until about 18 to 20 weeks. Be sure to tell your pregnancy care provider whether or not you want to know the sex of your baby before your ultrasound.
A note from Cleveland Clinic
An ultrasound during pregnancy can be both exciting and terrifying. Your pregnancy care provider uses ultrasound to get a better idea of how your baby is growing and developing. There are different types of ultrasounds, and the exact timing may vary depending on your provider. Most pregnant people have two ultrasounds one in the first trimester and one in the second trimester. However, if theres a potential complication or medical reason for more ultrasounds, your provider will order more as a precaution. Talk to your provider about the ultrasound schedule during pregnancy and what you can expect.

What Happens At 4 Dpo
4 DPO is a very early stage in your cycles luteal phase, or time after an egg is released. If the egg released during ovulation is fertilized, its an early step toward becoming pregnant.
If the egg was fertilized by a sperm cell when you ovulated, the fertilized egg will transform into a zygote. Eventually, the zygote will travel down the fallopian tubes, making its way to becoming a morula or a blastocyst. This is the beginning stage for an embryo. When an embryo implants in your uterine lining, youre considered pregnant.
But all this takes time. At 4 DPO, fertilization, if it occurred, has only just occurred, and the fertilized egg is just starting its journey toward the uterus.
Its normal for women to have a heightened awareness of any bodily changes when theyre actively trying to conceive. Some women may experience symptoms this early on, but dont worry if you arent exactly feeling pregnant at 4 DPO because technically, youre not.
Some women may start to experience mild symptoms at 4 DPO but its more likely that youll need to wait a few weeks.
The earliest symptoms of pregnancy you may start to notice include:
A missed period is the most telltale sign of pregnancy, but if youre 4 DPO, you likely have around 9 to 12 days before youll experience this sign.
Other symptoms that you may experience within the first trimester of pregnancy include:

How Many Ultrasounds Do You Have During Your Pregnancy
Most pregnant people have one or two ultrasounds during pregnancy. However, the number and timing vary depending on your pregnancy care provider and if you have any health conditions. If your pregnancy is high risk or if your provider suspects you or your baby has a health condition, they may suggest more frequent ultrasounds.
Your First Three Weeks Of Pregnancy
Hereâs the thing: Because of the way pregnancy is usually measured, youâre not actually pregnant during the first two weeks or so of your pregnancy. Healthcare providers calculate the length of an average pregnancy as 40 weeks, starting from the first day of your last menstrual periodâthis is known as the LMP dating method. So, when youâre 1 week pregnant, youâve only just started your period. At two weeks pregnant, youâre ovulating. And since ovulation happens about 14 days after the start of your period you canât really become pregnant until week 3 at the earliest. It can be mind-bogglingâwe get it. But, for the sake of calculation, and what you and your healthcare provider will consider as 1 and 2 weeks pregnant, youâre not actually pregnant! But although at 1, 2, or 3 weeks pregnant you may not notice any of those very early signs of pregnancy, there may be a lot happening on the inside.

When To Take Early Result Pregnancy Tests
Early pregnancy tests can be used several days before a missed period. These tests are more accurate for people who conceived earlier in their cycle.
If you ovulated a little late, you may have conceived later in your cycle. In this case, there may not be enough hCG for these tests to detect until closer to or after your missed period.
If you received an hCG trigger shot to help with fertility, its best to wait two weeks after the shot to take a pregnancy test. The trigger shot can cause a false positive if a pregnancy test is taken before the medication has left your system.

What Happens In Your Belly At 1 2 And 3 Weeks Pregnant
If you have a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, at least one of your ovaries will release an egg around 14 days after the first day of your last period.
Keep in mind that this can vary depending on the actual length of your menstrual cycle.Once released, the egg will start moving down one of your fallopian tubes, where it may be united with sperm in a process called fertilisation.
Sperm can live inside your body for up to 7 days, and your egg has a lifespan of around 12 to 24 hours, so you can still get pregnant even if you donât have sex precisely on the day of ovulation.
But what actually happens in the first few weeks of pregnancy? Keep reading to find out.
Increased Oil In Your Skin
Some women experience more oil production from their sebum glands, thanks to hormone fluctuations. Also, more blood volume can increase the secretion of oil. You may be especially prone if you already have oily or combination skin.
This can have some unwanted side effects, such as acne. But along with acne, increased oils can also make your face look like its glowing.

Light Spotting And Cramping
Light spotting, also known as implantation bleeding, can occur when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This can happen about 10 to 14 days after conception, around the same time that you are supposed to have your period. Light spotting may also be accompanied by cramping, which can feel similar to menstrual cramps.
Can I Prevent An Ectopic Pregnancy

Early Pregnancy Signs & Symptoms
A human body goes through many changes during the first eight weeks of pregnancy. As the fetus begins to form, some pregnant people feel a little different. The earliest signs of pregnancy are essential to know so you can safeguard your health and begin early prenatal care. Here are some other first signs of pregnancy that you may experience at the start of the first trimester.
- Acute sense of smell: Your sense of smell may be heightened due to hormonal changes in early pregnancy. Strong odors may lead to nausea and vomiting in some women.
- Spotting/light bleeding: Caused by implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus, this early sign of pregnancy may be mistaken for a light period. The cervix may also bleed more easily as the area develops more blood vessels. However, if you notice bleeding during pregnancy, call your ob-gyn provider.
- Bloating: Chalk it up to pregnancy hormones and water retention. You may experience belly bloating and puffiness as an early sign of pregnancy.
- Cramping: Mild cramps are a common early pregnancy symptom. Speak with your healthcare provider or ob-gyn whenever you experience abdominal pain, pelvic pain, or cramping during pregnancy that does not resolve with time or rest.
- Food sensitivities: Certain foods or food odors may trigger an upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting
- Headaches: This pregnancy symptom may be caused by increased hormones and related fatigue. However, if you experience severe or persistent headaches, call your ob-gyn.
Are Cervical Mucus Changes A Reliable Way To Track Fertility And Pregnancy
Taking a daily look at your cervical mucus can be a good way to gauge your fertility, but it cant pinpoint your actual chances of conceiving with any real precision. It doesn’t tell you exactly when you’re ovulating, and not all women experience these changes.
Checking every day can help you become familiar with the variations, so it’s worth a shot. Note the changes you see in terms of amount, slipperiness, color and consistency.
Studies have shown that the practice of cervical mucus monitoring may increase the odds of conception, though its only one of many factors that contribute to getting pregnant.

The Most Common Sign Of Early Pregnancy A Missed Period
Your menstrual cycle is your bodys way of preparing for a possible pregnancy each month. Part of that is the thickening of your uterine lining, which is where a fertilized egg would implant to begin a pregnancy.
If youre not pregnant, your period is how your uterus sheds that extra lining. If you are pregnant, that lining stays put and you dont get your normal flow. This is why a missed period is often the earliest sign of pregnancy.
Of course, a delayed or missed period doesnt always mean youre pregnant. If your body is under a lot of stress or you have a hormonal imbalance, you could be experiencing an irregular menstrual cycle.
What Results Do You Get On A Pregnancy Ultrasound
Your ultrasound results will be normal or abnormal. A normal result means your pregnancy care provider didnt find any problems and that your baby is growing and developing normally. An abnormal result means your provider noticed something irregular. If they do, your provider will order additional ultrasounds or diagnostic tests to determine if something is wrong.
Occasionally, the ultrasound is incomplete if theres difficulty seeing all the structures needed for that particular ultrasound. Your babys position or movement sometimes makes it difficult to see everything your provider needs to see. If this is the case, youll need a repeat ultrasound and theyll try again.
There are some limitations to ultrasounds, so your provider may not find certain abnormalities until after birth.

Varicose Veins And Leg Oedema
Varicose veins of the legs are very common in pregnancy due to a combination of factors, including increased volume of circulating blood during pregnancy, and pressure of the pregnant uterus on the larger veins. This increased pressure on the veins can also result in swelling of the legs that can cause pain, feelings of heaviness, cramps and other unusual sensations.
If you have varicose veins, it is recommended that you:
- Wear support stockings.

Early Pregnancy Symptoms Vs Pms: Whats The Difference
Most early pregnancy symptoms before your period are strikingly similar to the side effects of PMS. However, youll only notice changes in your areolas if youre pregnant. A consistently elevated BBT and creamy vaginal discharge post-ovulation are also both relatively reliable signs of conception, but theyre certainly not foolproof.
Otherwise, the only way to know if other early pregnancy symptoms are due to a baby or PMS is to hold out until you can take a pregnancy test.

What Are The Symptoms Of An Ectopic Pregnancy
The early symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can be very similar to typical pregnancy symptoms. However, you may experience additional symptoms during an ectopic pregnancy, including:
- Vaginal bleeding.
- Pain in your lower abdomen, pelvis and lower back.
- Dizziness or weakness.
If the fallopian tube ruptures, the pain and bleeding could be severe enough to cause additional symptoms. These can include:
- Rectal pressure.
When a tube bursts, you may feel sharp lower abdominal pain. This is a medical emergency and you will need to contact your healthcare provider or go to the emergency room immediately.
If you realize that you are pregnant and have an IUD in place, or have a history of a tubal ligation , contact your healthcare provider right away. Ectopic pregnancy is more common in these situations.
How Accurate Are Pregnancy Tests 7 Days Past Ovulation
So, youve made it to 7 DPO and are experiencing some or all of the early signs of pregnancy. Is it time to do a pregnancy test? Are they even accurate at this point?
Most home pregnancy test manufacturers state that they can be performed with 99% accuracy on the day that you expect your period. This is an approximate date, though because not everyone has a textbook 28-day cycle. Furthermore, there is a window of opportunity in which you can conceive.
Its possible to get pregnant several days before and a day after you normally ovulate. This is because sperm can live for up to five days inside your body after sex, and the egg can survive for about 24 hours. This is why theres no definitive response on how early you can detect pregnancy. There are just too many different variables.
If youre having sex, not using birth control, and experiencing signs of pregnancy about 7 DPO, you might want to do a pregnancy test. You might even get a BFP, but only if the chosen home pregnancy test is sensitive enough.
If you do try a home pregnancy test at 7 DPO and its negative, wait a little longer. Even if you are pregnant, the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin that trips a positive might not be high enough yet to be detected by the pregnancy test.
