“Dieting during pregnancy can be difficult to assess,” says Dr. Rhee, “as it is important to eat a balanced diet while pregnant.” But she adds that watching portion control can be a healthy practice to continue in pregnancy if your weight is a concern.

She also stresses that if you are on medications or supplements to aid weight loss, you should speak to your health care provider to make sure that they are safe during pregnancy. Lastly, Dr. Rhee advises that diets in which one eliminates certain food groups altogether should be avoided.

Dr. Gersh advises that overweight pregnant women continue to eat wisely and eat large amounts of vegetables while adding some additional protein. “Stop trying to lose weight but dont abandon your overall plan to be healthy,” she says. “Dont focus on weight gain or weight loss. Rather, focus on getting lots of high quality, nutrient-dense foods into your diet and nature will take care of things naturally.”

Deborah Malkoff-Cohen, MS, RD, CDN, CDE adds that eating for two is an outdated recommendation, especially during the first trimester when the baby is very small. She suggests these tips to create the most healthy diet during pregnancy if you are overweight or obese:

Continue Doing Cardio To Stay Healthy

Again, remember that pregnancy is a time to embrace weight gain. Try to avoid getting caught up in a mission to lose fat, and instead focus on keeping your body as healthy as possible during pregnancy.

Holly Roser, CPT, certified pre- and postnatal fitness trainer and owner of the Holly Roser Fitness studio, tells she wouldn’t suggest fat loss as a goal for pregnant women. “In general, pregnancy isn’t the time to recomp your body,” she says, “but you can absolutely maintain the body composition you have before pregnancy.”

Cardio exercise both aerobic and anaerobic are great for maintaining cardiovascular health and body composition during pregnancy, Roser says. She recommends walking, biking, cycling on a stationary bike, swimming and doing aqua-aerobics. You can do steady-state cardio or implement moderate intervals for a challenge.

Moderate weight training with high-volume rep schemes and lower weights can also help you maintain your body composition while pregnant, Roser says.

Lauren “LoLo” Wilson, lead instructor at CycleBar Midtown in Charlotte, North Carolina, has firsthand experience both training pregnant women and exercising while pregnant herself. For Wilson, cardio came in the form of cycling and strength training came in the form of yoga. These exercises helped her maintain her body composition throughout pregnancy but more importantly, it made the postpartum bounce-back easier on her body, she says.

    The fats that our bodies require are called Essential Fatty Acids, the most well known among them being Omega 3. Omega 3’s only come from food and thus need to be consumed.
