Tips For Healthy Eating
“Dieting during pregnancy can be difficult to assess,” says Dr. Rhee, “as it is important to eat a balanced diet while pregnant.” But she adds that watching portion control can be a healthy practice to continue in pregnancy if your weight is a concern.
She also stresses that if you are on medications or supplements to aid weight loss, you should speak to your health care provider to make sure that they are safe during pregnancy. Lastly, Dr. Rhee advises that diets in which one eliminates certain food groups altogether should be avoided.
Dr. Gersh advises that overweight pregnant women continue to eat wisely and eat large amounts of vegetables while adding some additional protein. “Stop trying to lose weight but dont abandon your overall plan to be healthy,” she says. “Dont focus on weight gain or weight loss. Rather, focus on getting lots of high quality, nutrient-dense foods into your diet and nature will take care of things naturally.”
Deborah Malkoff-Cohen, MS, RD, CDN, CDE adds that eating for two is an outdated recommendation, especially during the first trimester when the baby is very small. She suggests these tips to create the most healthy diet during pregnancy if you are overweight or obese:
Continue Doing Cardio To Stay Healthy
Again, remember that pregnancy is a time to embrace weight gain. Try to avoid getting caught up in a mission to lose fat, and instead focus on keeping your body as healthy as possible during pregnancy.
Holly Roser, CPT, certified pre- and postnatal fitness trainer and owner of the Holly Roser Fitness studio, tells LIVESTRONG.com she wouldn’t suggest fat loss as a goal for pregnant women. “In general, pregnancy isn’t the time to recomp your body,” she says, “but you can absolutely maintain the body composition you have before pregnancy.”
Cardio exercise both aerobic and anaerobic are great for maintaining cardiovascular health and body composition during pregnancy, Roser says. She recommends walking, biking, cycling on a stationary bike, swimming and doing aqua-aerobics. You can do steady-state cardio or implement moderate intervals for a challenge.
Moderate weight training with high-volume rep schemes and lower weights can also help you maintain your body composition while pregnant, Roser says.
Lauren “LoLo” Wilson, lead instructor at CycleBar Midtown in Charlotte, North Carolina, has firsthand experience both training pregnant women and exercising while pregnant herself. For Wilson, cardio came in the form of cycling and strength training came in the form of yoga. These exercises helped her maintain her body composition throughout pregnancy but more importantly, it made the postpartum bounce-back easier on her body, she says.
Is Losing Weight While Pregnant Safe
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists encourages women to reach a healthy weight before getting pregnant. According to the organization, even a small amount of weight loss can make a difference.
Losing weight before you become pregnant is the best way to decrease the risk of problems caused by obesity. Losing even a small amount of weight can improve your overall health and pave the way for a healthier pregnancy.
But what if you get pregnant unexpectedly and your body mass index falls into the overweight or obese categories? Or what if you are following a healthy diet and exercise program for weight loss and you get pregnant before you reach your goal?
Dr. Dr. Julie Rhee is a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist and Director of the Preimplantation Genetic Screening Program at Vios Fertility Institute in St. Louis. She is double board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as reproductive endocrinology and infertility .
According to Dr. Rhee, if you are overweight or obese, there is no need to discontinue a healthy diet and exercise program once you get pregnant. She adds a few cautions, however, for weight loss during pregnancy.
“Drastic weight loss would be discouraged in pregnancy, but a healthy diet consisting of exercise and portion control with well-balanced meals can be started during pregnancy.”
Julie Rhee, M.D.

So What Exactly Distinguishes A Healthy Fat From An Unhealthy One
The fats that our bodies require are called Essential Fatty Acids, the most well known among them being Omega 3. Omega 3’s only come from food and thus need to be consumed. These Omega 3’s break down into components called EPA and DHA which are what make these fats so beneficial to our health. On the other side, we also have Omega 6’s. When eaten in a balanced ratio with Omega 3’s these 6’s don’t tend to cause problems. However, eating too many Omega 6’s can contribute to inflammation in the body which is linked to a host of health conditions including high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
Unfortunately, Omega 6’s are much more common in our modern diet than Omega 3’s. This is because they are found in processed, fried and refined foods and also are high in conventionally raised meat and dairy. If we are eating too much fast and packaged food and meat and dairy from non-organic/grass-fed sources then it is likely our Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio is out of balance.
Fats you should consider avoiding when possible:

Losing weight while you’re pregnant is generally not advised by medical professionals even overweight and obese women are almost always advised to gain weight during pregnancy. However, there are things you should do to prevent yourself from gaining unnecessary weight during your pregnancy. Here’s what you should know.
Exercises To Avoid While Pregnant
Exercise restrictions vary depending on the trimester, Roser says. “In general, you don’t want to lie on your back or your stomach, hold your breath for too long, do isometric moves or exercise in very hot environments ,” she says.
You should also avoid very bouncy activities and activities where falling is likely, as well as activities that put a lot of strain on your joints your joints are more lax during pregnancy, so you have a higher risk of sprains, Roser says.
The American Pregnancy Association provides science-backed pregnancy exercise guidelines, but Wilson reminds pregnant women to check in with their care team.
“Talk to your primary care doctor, your ob-gyn or your team of midwives,” she says, “and, every time you want to make a change to your exercise routine, ask if it’s safe for your particular pregnancy.”
Also, Wilson urges moms-to-be to listen to their bodies. “Be very mindful that your body is already under additional stress, and exercise can add to that,” she says. “Moving your body is a good thing to do, but know that it’s also OK to rest.”

Possible Dangers Of Weight Loss
Losing a few pounds is usually OK at the beginning of pregnancy. However, overall, “losing weight during pregnancy has been associated with increased risk of decreased birth weight and preterm delivery,” says Han.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , preterm birth occurs when a baby is born too early, which is defined as before 37 weeks of pregnancy have been completed. Babies who have low body weight at birth and are pre-term may be susceptible to other health conditions or abnormalities because their bodies have not had the ability to develop fully.
Your physician will monitor your weight closely and you will be weighed at each prenatal appointment in order to prevent complications that could impact your baby, such as:
- Pre-term birth
- Small size and/or low weight at birth
- Large size and/or high weight at birth
- Developing obesity later in life

Slowed Growth In Babies
As Phelps explains, studies that looked at the pros and cons of weight loss during pregnancy found an increased risk of small-for-gestational-age babies, which is a key risk factor for neonatal morbidity and mortality.
There are many unknowns, says Phelps, and more research needs to be done in this area, but the fact that weight loss is known to affect a babys growth is why most providers will rarely recommend that pregnant people actively lose weight.

Common Reasons Concerns And Special Considerations
Losing weight in pregnancy might seem alarming but it’s fairly common. Sometimes, it is nothing to worry about, especially if the weight loss is short-lived and followed by the recommended weight gain. However, losing weight during pregnancy is cause for concern if the weight loss is substantial, long-lasting, or occurs after the first trimester.
In those cases, losing weight can be problematic and will need medical attention. Your provider will track your weight gain or loss at every prenatal check-up for this very reason. Below, we explore why pregnancy weight loss occurs, when to be concerned, and what do about it.
Why You Should Not Lose Weight While Pregnant
It is rare that losing weight during pregnancy will be beneficial. Usually, the dangers that weight loss poses to your baby outweigh the benefits of losing weight. However, it is also important to understand the effects that being overweight may have on pregnancy.
As ACOG points out, being overweight increases the risk of giving birth to a baby with birth defects and giving birth prematurely. It can make diagnostic tests that are performed in pregnancy, such as ultrasounds and fetal heart rate monitoring, more difficult. It can increase the risk of having a larger than normal baby, which can make childbirth more difficult and increase the chances of having a C-section birth. Finally, being overweight can increase the risk of stillbirth.
If you are overweight and considering becoming pregnant, ACOG suggests that the best time to lose weight would be before you become pregnant. But if that doesnt happen, there are many things you can do to stay healthy during your pregnancy and ensure the health and safety of your child. Maintaining a healthy, nutrient-dense diet and incorporating exercise into your routine are both immensely helpful, whatever your size and weight.

How To Get Your Mind Right
1. Understand that breaking even on your weight during Christmas is a big win!
Lets face it, Christmas is a time when most people gain a few kilos so, if you can maintain your weight and exercise routine during this time, give yourself a big pat on the back! Seriously, this is a big win in anyones book. If you implement some of my healthy tips, youll be able to achieve this goal, and still enjoy the festive fun.
2. Set realistic goals over Christmas
The festive season might not be the best time to aim for your best weight loss result of the year, and if you set goals that are too harsh, you might be tempted to cheat, so set realistic health goals. Instead of weight loss, perhaps your goals for December could be to achieve a minimum number of workouts each week, or maybe youll decide to set a maximum number of drinks youll have at the next Christmas party.
3. Have realistic expectations, but dont write off the whole festive season!
I believe the best approach to losing your Christmas weight is not to gain weight in December. Believe me, it IS possible to get through the holidays without gaining weight and the best part is: you dont even have to skip the Christmas pudding!
4. Accept that not every occasion is a special occasion that requires a special indulgence
