How Does This Medication Work What Will It Do For Me
Beclomethasone inhaler belongs to the group of medications called inhaled corticosteroids, which help prevent asthma attacks by decreasing inflammation in the lungs and thereby opening the airways. When used regularly every day, inhaled beclomethasone decreases the number and severity of asthma attacks. However, it will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started.
After starting the medication, you should see improvement in asthma symptoms in about 1 to 2 weeks. It may take 3 to 4 weeks to see the full benefits. If you do not notice any improvement in your asthma symptoms after 1 week, contact your doctor.
This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. Which Medications Should Not Be Used During Pregnancy
- Antihistamines and decongestants: These medications are used to relieve stuffy, runny, or itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and other minor allergy symptoms. Although some decongestants might carry a small risk of birth defects when used early in pregnancy, their safety in pregnancy has not been fully studied.
- Epinephrine and other related medications: If possible, avoid regular use of epinephrine and other related medication as they may pose a higher risk to the fetus. Epinephrine may be given as an injection to treat a severe asthma attack or a life-threatening allergic response. If this situation occurs, treating your reaction effectively and quickly is important to decrease the risk of oxygen deprivation to the fetus.
- Aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs : These medications are used to relieve headaches, muscle pain, inflammation, and fever. They are not recommended during late-term pregnancy.
- Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease are common in pregnancy. They can often be treated without medications by elevating the head of the bed, avoiding overeating, avoiding food triggers, and not eating within two to three hours before bedtime. If medications are needed to control heartburn and GERD, avoid regular use of antacids that contain bicarbonate and magnesium.
Tips For Staying Well With Your Asthma Through Your Pregnancy
Heres how you can lower your risk of asthma symptoms and asthma attacks:
- Keep taking your asthma medicines as prescribed. Theyre safe to take when youre pregnant. In fact, your baby is more at risk if you stop taking your medicines and have symptoms and asthma attacks.
- Have an asthma review. Your GP can check your asthma medicines, your inhaler technique and update your . Book further appointments if you notice symptoms during your pregnancy.
- Tell your midwife you have asthma. Make sure asthmas in your notes and included in your birth plan. Looking after your asthma needs to be part of your overall antenatal care plan.
- Stop smoking. Smoking while youre pregnant means your babys more likely to have breathing problems, including asthma. It also puts you more at risk of both miscarriage and premature labour. And avoid breathing in secondhand smoke too. Theres lots of support to help you give up.
- Have the flu jab. Pregnant women, and people with asthma, are more at risk of complications from flu, like chest infections or pneumonia. The flu jab is safe in pregnancy. It will also help protect your baby from flu in their first few months.

Taking Asthma Medicines When Youre Pregnant
The medicines used to treat asthma are safe in pregnancy. They won’t harm your baby. This includes reliever inhalers preventer inhalers long-acting and combined relievers theophylline and steroid tablets.
There are more risks to both you and your baby if you don’t take your medicines and your asthma gets worse, says Dr Andy Whittamore. This is because when asthma isnt controlled there may not be enough oxygen getting to your baby.
If youre already taking a leukotriene receptor antagonist , such as Montelukast, its safe to continue taking it during pregnancy.
If youve been taking steroid tablets in the weeks leading up to your due date, make sure you tell your midwife and the hospital staff. They should keep a closer eye on your asthma.
And if youre still taking steroid tablets when you go into labour, your birth team will need to make sure you continue to take these medicines during labour. Its really important these medicines are not stopped suddenly.

How Should I Use This Medication
The dose of beclomethasone inhaler should be individualized. The dose used should be the lowest one required to control asthma symptoms.
For adults and children over 12 years of age, the usual dose ranges from 50 µg to 400 µg twice daily .
For children 5 to 11 years of age, the usual dose is 50 µg to 100 µg twice daily.
Once your asthma symptoms are controlled, your doctor may suggest that you reduce the dose gradually to ensure you are using the lowest dose needed.
Inhaled beclomethasone is used to prevent asthma attacks. It is not used to relieve an attack that has already started. For relief of an asthma attack that has already started, you should use a “reliever” medication. If you do not have another medication to use for an attack or if you have any questions about this, check with your health care professional.
If your doctor has asked you to use a “reliever” inhaler such as salbutamol or terbutaline with your beclomethasone inhaler, you should use the reliever inhaler first, wait several minutes, and then use the beclomethasone inhaler. The reliever medication will provide immediate relief of symptoms of the asthma attack, while the beclomethasone inhalation works to treat and control asthma regularly.

Using Your Inhaler With A Spacer
If you or your child find it difficult to use an inhaler, your doctor or nurse may give you a spacer to use with it. Spacers can reduce the risk of side effects affecting your mouth and throat. They are particularly useful for giving beclometasone to young children.
A spacer is a large plastic container with a mouthpiece and a hole for the inhaler. It makes it easier to get the right amount of beclometasone into your lungs.

Are Allergy Shots Safe During Pregnancy
If you are already receiving allergy shots , you can usually continue if you are not having reactions.
As an extra precaution, though, your allergist may cut the dosage of the allergy extract to reduce the chance of a severe allergic reaction, or at a minimum keep the dose the same. But the dose should not be increased during pregnancy since that increases the chance of a reaction.

Oral beta-agonist therapy with oral albuterol or terbutaline is of little therapeutic benefit in the management of asthma, and side effect profiles make these medications unattractive as compared to the inhaled forms.

Designated Safe Haven Locations
The idea of a safe haven location is somewhere where the baby will receive immediate care including health care clinics, police stations, fire stations, emergency medical technicians , churches, and other safe places a state deems acceptable. To qualify as a safe haven, most states emphasis that parents must relinquish unwanted infants to a place where the infant can receive immediate care. Leaving a baby when no one is around does not qualify.
