What Can Help With Pregnancy Nausea

How To Deal With Pregnancy Nausea

Tips to Naturally Treat First Trimester Nausea

Pregnancy nausea is a beast. As someone who was once on a ton of IV antibiotics and got extremely nauseous, I found pregnancy nausea to be worse. Probably because most people dont talk about being pregnant when they feel the worst. So theres this component of secrecy that makes the nausea SO much harder to cope with.

Eat Smaller Meals More Frequently

Most of us were raised with the habit of eating three meals a day breakfast, lunch, and dinner with maybe a small snack or two thrown in to get us through the day. But thats for people who arent eating for two.

When youre pregnant, things are different. Instead of the standard three meals a day that youre used to, we recommend eating smaller meals more frequently. At this point, you may be asking yourself, Why would eating smaller meals more frequently help with morning sickness? Great question! Heres the answer.

Eating 5 or 6 small meals a day will help stabilize your blood sugar levels. This will keep you from being too hungry and too full both feelings that can make morning sickness worse.

In addition, when you eat anti-nausea foods consistently throughout the day, the discomfort associated with morning sickness can be significantly reduced. And if youre wondering exactly what those anti-nausea foods are, dont worry, well get to them soon.

The easiest way to get started eating more frequently is to include one small meal between breakfast and lunch, and another small meal between lunch and dinner. If you still find yourself craving food at the end of the day, eat a small snack a few hours after dinner. If thats still not enough, try including a small meal in bed before your regular breakfast.

How Long Does It Last

Nausea usually starts by the fifth or sixth week of pregnancy and may be the worst towards the beginning of the third month. Symptoms usually disappear around the start of the second trimester, but in 15 to 20 percent of women, they may last longer.

Luckily, these sensations can usually be managed without a visit to your provider or prescription drugs. Here are some helpful home remedies from One Medical providers to get you through morning sickness.

Eat A Littleand Then A Little More

Many women find that grazing all day settles their stomach. “I call it the Six Meal Solution,” says Murkoff. “When your tummy is empty, the stomach acids have nothing to feast on but your stomach lining, compounding nausea. On the other hand, eating too much can overtax the digestive system, also leading to quease. Keeping your tummy a little bit full all day and all night is the best defense against morning sickness.”

Murkoff suggests keeping a snack stash nearby at all times. Nibbling a little bit before you get out of bed in the morning can stave off nausea, and a light bedtime snack will stabilize your blood sugar throughout the night. Eating small snacks throughout the day also enables you to keep some food in your stomach at all times.

Take Your Prenatal Vitamin At Dinner

Most of us are used to taking a vitamin in the morning with breakfast so that our body can make use of the nutrients throughout the day. But when youre pregnant, that influx of vitamins and minerals can actually make your nausea worse.

Instead of taking your prenatal vitamin in the morning, we recommend taking it at night with dinner. Taking your vitamin at night works better because your body has been digesting all day long so the vitamin isnt such a shock to your system. And taking that prenatal vitamin with a meal helps your body break it down more effectively.

Put both of those things together and you wont feel quite so uneasy.

How To Ease Nausea While Pregnant

Pregnancy nausea relief

If morning sickness has your stomach in knots, try one of Ms. Costas top tips to help keep things on an even keel.

  • Eat often. An empty stomach can make nausea worse. Eat small meals or snacks that are easy to get down such as a handful of nuts or a few crackers every 1-2 hours.
  • Pick a protein. Keep a supply of high-protein snacks on hand. They offer longer-lasting relief from nausea than foods that are high in carbohydrates or fats, according to another study. Costas favorite picks include yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, nuts and seeds.
  • Go sour for sweet relief. Sour flavors seem to help curb nausea. Try sucking on a citrus slice or a piece of lemon-flavored hard candy.
  • Drink for two. While this isnt as fun as eating for two, staying hydrated during pregnancy can help ease nausea. Keep sliced lemons on hand to squeeze into your water. Or try sipping a little ginger ale or clear soda.
  • Avoid lying down after eating. It can hinder digestion and may make you feel queasy.
  • Wait awhile to brush. Brushing your teeth right after eating can trigger your gag reflex. For best results, try to hold off on brushing for 30 minutes or so after you eat.
  • Avoid strong odors. Odors that might seem innocuous when youre not pregnant may suddenly turn your stomach, thanks to the surging hormones of pregnancy. Try to steer clear of strong or offensive smells in the meantime.

    What Are Food Aversions

10 WAYS TO HELP PREGNANCY NAUSEA AND MORNING SICKNESS

Food aversions during pregnancy are waves of nausea caused by eating, smelling, being around, or even just thinking about a specific food. While typical pregnancy sickness has no specific trigger, you can avoid nausea due to food aversions once you identify the exact trigger.

We dont know what causes food aversions, but its likely related to the good old HCG that causes regular pregnancy nausea. There may also be a psychological component, where you experience severe nausea or vomiting after eating a particular food and then cant stomach the idea of being around it again.

A heightened sense of smell during pregnancy possibly may cause these aversions, a sensory overload youre not used to .

Then again, it may have no known cause because its also entirely possible to go from hating a food to craving it at another point in your pregnancy.

Some food aversions last throughout pregnancy, while others may come and go.

Some of the most common food aversions are:

    • Meat raw or cooked.
    • Foods with strong scents or flavors, like vinegar-based foods or citrus fruits.

Make Sure You Have Emotional Support

Many people fail to appreciate how awful and debilitating morning sickness can be. Morning sickness has the connotation that Oh, this is a normal part of pregnancy, and people dont think of it as being pathology related to pregnancy, said Dr. Saha. A lot of women get undertreated or they dont even seek medical advice for their condition. That is a major problem. Make sure your family, your partner and your doctor give you with the emotional support you need, and let your provider know if you are struggling.

Sit Up And Avoid Crunching The Stomach

If your mom ever told you not to lie down after eating, she was on to something. When you lie flat, gastric juices may rise and increase feelings of nausea and overall discomfort, especially if you have acid reflux or GERD.

Crunching your stomach may also worsen nausea since it compresses the area and makes you less comfortable in general. When youre nauseous, try reclining with your upper body elevated, and move around as little as possible.

What Are The Symptoms Of Morning Sickness

Although it is called morning sickness, nausea can happen at any time of the day.

The symptoms of morning sickness vary and include:

    • nausea, with or without vomiting
    • aversion to certain odours and foods
    • dry retching
    • in severe cases, persistent vomiting and dehydration

Between 8 and 9 out of every 10 women experience the symptoms of morning sickness at some time in their pregnancy. For most women, the symptoms are mild and they can go about their lives normally with just a few small changes to their diet. For some women though, morning sickness has a significant, adverse effect on their daily activities and quality of life.

    Meditate Or Take Deep Breaths

How to Alleviate First Trimester Nausea Symptoms

Meditation, the practice of focusing and calming the mind, may help relieve nausea. Its a type of relaxation technique that may be especially beneficial for nausea caused by stress and anxiety.

Deep breathing is a meditation technique. But you can also do it on your own to quell stress-related nausea. Breathe in slowly through your nose, hold your breath for three seconds, and slowly breathe out. Repeat several times until nausea subsides.

But there are some changes you can make to your diet and daily life to try to ease the symptoms.

If these do not work for you or you’re having more severe symptoms, your doctor or midwife might recommend medicine.

Small Frequent Meals/snacks May Be Tolerated Better

When youre actually nauseous or experience nausea frequently, you may be better off eating smaller meals or more snack-like meals. For me that meant a lot of snack plates or toast.

Your protein needs increase during pregnancy , so try to add protein at *most* of your mini meals throughout the day.

Mini meals that can help deal with pregnancy nausea:

    • Yogurt with granola
    • Whole grain pasta and meatballs with sauce

Try Alternative Tools Like Meditation Or Massage To Cope With Symptoms

If you are having trouble coping with your morning sickness, whether youre taking medication or not, it might be worth adding in alternatives. Silver recommended approaches like meditation, exercise, deep-breathing, massage or even counseling. Treating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is a little bit like treating chronic pain, explained Dr. Silver. You may not necessarily be nausea-free, but finding tools that help you function in daily life in spite of the pain gets people through the day, he said.
