If you enjoy drinking peppermint tea, you shouldn’t give it up for the entirety of your pregnancy. But because peppermint might be able to cause some very mild uterine contractions, some women don’t want to risk drinking it early on.
“If you want to be extremely cautious then just give peppermint and chamomile a rest during the first trimester,” Natasha Richardson, the founder of Forager Botanicals and author of a dissertation on herbs in pregnancy. “That’s when miscarriages are most likely. It’s unlikely that those herbs would actually cause miscarriage, but I wouldn’t want anyone drawing that conclusion in an unfortunate turn of events.”
Avoid: Wheatgrass Juice Or Shots
Wheatgrass is full of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, antioxidants the list goes on and on. It’s no wonder pregnant women would consider adding some wheatgrass juice or wheatgrass shots to their diet. However, this arguably healthy beverage can also present some dangers.
“Wheatgrass is usually grown in soil or water and consumed raw, which means it could be contaminated with bacteria or mold,” Brent A. Bauer, director of the Department of Internal Medicine’s Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program for Mayo Clinic, wrote for the organization. “If you’re pregnant or breast-feeding, don’t use wheatgrass.”
Research has also demonstrated a possible connection between consuming wheatgrass and miscarriages, sports nutritionist and dietitian Deepshikha Agarwal explained to The Health Site. Agarwal also noted the potential for causing “an impairment in the baby.” So, while the drink may have numerous benefits, it’s safest to wait to add it to your diet until after your baby is born.

What About Black Tea Green Tea And Oolong Tea In Pregnancy
Unlike herbal teas, which contain only about 0.4 milligrams of caffeine per cup, non-herbal teas contain about 40 to 50 milligrams per cup. Sip four or five cups throughout the day, and you’ve gotten about 200 milligrams of caffeine. A study from Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California Division of Research found that pregnant women who consumed more than 200 milligrams of caffeine daily had double the risk of miscarriage compared with those who avoided the stimulant. However, a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found no association between intakes of up to 350 milligrams of caffeine and miscarriage.
Without a definitive answer on the effects of caffeine while expecting, most experts agree it’s best to use caution and limit intake to less than 200 milligrams a day. “Caffeine in any form is too stimulating during pregnancy,” says Hirota. “It also increases the load on the liver, which is already busy processing pregnancy hormones.” Even so, drinking tea during pregnancy tends to be better than coffee, so you can indulge a little bit more.

Drinking Chamomile Tea During Pregnancy
Chamomile tea might not be safe to drink while pregnant because it could cause contractions that might lead to miscarriage or preterm birth.”If you’re not pregnant, chamomile tea contains healthy antioxidants that may be health-promoting,” says Mitri. “However, drinking chamomile tea may pose a higher risk of pregnancy complications, especially when consumed regularly.”
It is probable that a limited amount of chamomile tea could be fine during pregnancy, but there is no known threshold currently. “As the doses and duration of use of chamomile are not standardized, the exact dose of chamomile needed to induce labor is not well-known,” explains Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, a medical toxicologist and the co-director of the National Capital Poison Center.
We don’t yet know enough about chamomile tea to consider it safe to drink during pregnancy. Until more studies are conducted, it is best to abstain from drinking chamomile tea till after your little one has arrived.
