If your mom ever told you not to lie down after eating, she was on to something. When you lie flat, gastric juices may rise and increase feelings of nausea and overall discomfort, especially if you have acid reflux or GERD.

Crunching your stomach may also worsen nausea since it compresses the area and makes you less comfortable in general. When youre nauseous, try reclining with your upper body elevated, and move around as little as possible.

Many people don’t feel like eating when they feel nauseous. But, finding the foods that go down easiest can help morning sickness. Heidi Murkoff, co-author of What to Expect When You’re Expecting, says that every person and queasy tummy is different. “What spells relief to one may spell P-U-K-E to another.”

Though there’s no hard-and-fast rule about the best foods for morning sickness, many people find it easier to keep certain items down. Bland, carb-rich snacks like crackers, dry cereal, and pretzels have seen many people through morning sickness, as have ice-cold treats like popsicles and watermelon straight from the refrigerator.

Fatty and spicy foods may upset your stomach, but if you find that they work for you, by all means, go ahead and eat them!

What Causes Morning Sickness

Not all women experience morning sickness the same way. Some feel queasy only occasionally, and others feel sick all day long but might never throw up. There are a few possible causes of morning sickness:

  • Hormones. The pregnancy hormone hCG peaks around the time morning sickness is the worst. Also, estrogen and progesterone levels rise during pregnancy, which relax the digestive tract muscles and make digestion less efficient .
  • Sensitivity to odors. Your heightened sense of smell during pregnancy can make some scents sickening.
  • Excess saliva.Experts suspect this is the bodyâs way of protecting your mouth, teeth, and throat from the corrosive effects of stomach acid, which can increase when youâre queasy.
  • Stress and fatigue. Emotional stress and being very tired can trigger nausea.
  • First-time pregnancy. If your body hasnât gone through a pregnancy before, the surge of hormones and other changes youâre experiencing might make nausea more likely.
  • Hot weather. It can be hard to get comfortable when youâre pregnant, especially if youâre overheated.
  • Genetics. If your mom or sister had morning sickness, chances are better you will, too.

Vitamin B6 And Doxylamine

Vitamin B6 is safe and easy to find in pharmacies or grocery stores, and can help ease nausea and vomiting, according to ACOG.

Prevention is key, says Dr. Adams. Starting B6 prior to onset of symptoms, and especially one month prior to pregnancyin a prenatal vitaminhas been shown to decrease the incidence and severity of of pregnancy.

Doxylamine, a medication found in over-the-counter sleep aids, can be added if vitamin B6 alone doesnt help symptoms. Its an antihistamine, meaning it blocks certain chemicals in the body that cause nausea.

Whether you take either by itself or both together, these two drugs are safe to take during pregnancy and have no harmful effects on the fetus, states ACOG. Your doctor can prescribe a drug that combines vitamin B6 and doxylamine.

If youre taking B6 alone, take 10 to 25 milligrams every six to eight hours, says Dr. Adams, who adds that the maximum dose of vitamin B6 in pregnancy is 200 milligrams a day. In combination with doxylamine is Diclegis , which is 10 milligrams of B6 and 10 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take this nightly, and may increase to up to four times daily, she says. Another form is Bonjesta, which contains 20 milligrams of B6 and 20 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take up to two tablets daily, she says.

Staying hydrated is so important early in your pregnancy. Drinking enough fluids will help settle your stomach and rehydrate your body after throwing up. Plain water is always a great choice, but sometimes a cup of herbal tea is a great drink to help ease nausea during pregnancy.

Not all teas are safe during pregnancy, so stick to herbal teas like chamomile, red raspberry, lemon, spearmint, peppermint, or peach. Adding lemon or ginger to your tea can also help calm nausea.

Sipping soup broth can also be a great way to get hydration and nutrition while calming your stomach. Broth goes down easily, and it contains electrolytes and essential minerals to keep your blood volume up, which can also prevent dehydration and relieve morning sickness.

If hot tea or broth is too aromatic, try cooling them or add ice for a soothing change.

Youre more likely to feel nauseous when your tummy’s empty. But eating too much at once can also contribute to queasiness.

Try the Goldilocks rule: Don’t overfill your belly, but don’t let it get completely empty. Instead, keep your stomach a little bit filled all the time.

Because smaller meals are easier to digest, theyre less likely to trigger both the queasies and heartburn. Aim for six mini-meals throughout the day rather than three large ones.
