Tap Into The Power Of Ginger
Ginger is safe and effective in relieving nausea caused by morning sickness. But it doesnt seem to work for vomiting.
Ginger comes in many forms. Moms- to-be can take ginger supplements three or four times a day, with a total daily dose of about 1 gram. Foods that contain ginger may also help ease nausea. These include ginger ale, ginger lollipops, and ginger tea.
Cures For Morning Sickness During Pregnancy
Pregnancy brings about a number of changes to your body swollen ankles, sore back, and constant pressure on your bladder. But for many women, nausea, or morning sickness, can be the most unpleasant symptom of the entire 9 months.
To add insult to injury, theres the name morning sickness. Whoever put those two words together really got it wrong! Its not uncommon for that sick feeling to persist well into the afternoon or evening making morning sickness feel like all-day sickness.
Thankfully, nausea during pregnancy doesnt have to be a 24-hour thing. There are a number of cures you can try right at home without expensive medications or time-consuming doctor visits. Here are14 tips to help you get rid of morning sickness.
What Does Heartburn Feel Like In Pregnancy Symptoms To Look For:
If you have had heartburn outside of your pregnancy, you may be familiar with what symptoms to look out for. Here are some of the symptoms you may experience if you have heartburn during your pregnancy:
- Pain, discomfort, or burning sensation in the chest behind the breastbone
- Chest pain that may worsen when bending over or laying down
- Burning in the throat or a taste of sourness in the back of throat
- Belching, burping
- Coughing or wheezing
Remember, if you didnt have heartburn before your pregnancy, these symptoms will likely subside after your pregnancy.
Chew Your Food To Cure Morning Sickness
Before you were pregnant, you probably didnt give much thought to chewing your food. You just put it in your mouth, chomped on it a few times with your teeth, swallowed it, and moved on to the next bite so you didnt miss your next appointment .
But when youre pregnant, that old habit of only chewing your food a few times can make your nausea worse. When it comes to digestion, chewing serves two purposes:
- Chewing breaks food into smaller, more manageable pieces so its easier to digest.
- Chewing allows saliva to soften food before it reaches the stomach and makes digestion easier.
So when you dont chew your food thoroughly, your stomach has to work harder to digest. This extra effort can lead to an upset stomach and nausea. As a rule of thumb, try chewing each mouthful of food 30 times before swallowing. Chewing your food 30 times before swallowing makes digestion easier and can reduce the nausea associated with pregnancy.
This may seem like a lot, but ask yourself, Would I rather take my time and chew my food completely, or rush through my meal and feel nauseated for the whole day? We know how wed answer.
Morning Sickness Cures From Medicine
Medications are usually the second line of defense against more severe cases of morning sickness, but many moms-to-be worry theyll harm the baby. Doctors, however, say to rest easy. I always remind my patients that we would never give anything that isnt safe, and that doesnt have a long safety record, Dr. Hakakha says. Just be sure to ask questions and consult your health care provider before taking any of these.

Tips And Tools To Fight Nausea In Pregnancy
The one I used was Sea Band Morning Sickness Wrist Bands. Honestly, it worked best when worn regularly during those weeks I was prone to morning sickness.
If I waited to put it on until after the nausea hit, it took a while to work. Instead, I wore it as a preventative measure and it help greatly! As long as I wore the wrist bands on both wrists, I didnt feel sick very often.

Tips To Help Survive Nausea During Pregnancy
Positive pink line on pregnancy test? Check. Small flutter on early ultrasound? Check. Nausea and vomiting? Double-check.
Often the constant feeling of nausea, which is accompanied by vomiting, soon overshadows the excitement of early pregnancy. Approximately 50-90 percent of women experience nausea and vomiting in their pregnancy, and 5 percent of women have the same symptoms throughout the entire pregnancy, per The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
“The term ‘morning sickness‘ is misleading nausea can occur any time of the day,” says Emily Linklater, D.O., Mayo Clinic Health System OB/GYN physician. “For most women, the nausea ends sometime in the late stages of the first trimester. Nausea may also be worse or better in one pregnancy versus another.”
Unfortunately, science hasnt proven the exact cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. The elevated pregnancy hormone, BHCG, and elevated estrogen have both been hypothesized as contributing to symptoms.
What can an expectant mother do? Here are some tips for surviving nausea and vomiting:
If over-the-counter options do not improve nausea and vomiting, then its wise to speak with your health care provider about anti-nausea prescription medications. Many prescription medications are safe in pregnancy and can relieve severe symptoms.
Nutritional Strategies To Combat Morning Sickness
Nutrition plays a huge role in helping to reduce the severity of nausea during pregnancy. Here are some nutritional strategies that can be used to combat morning sickness and alleviate nausea:
Eat small meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. This can help keep your stomach from becoming overly full and triggering nausea.
Choose bland, easy-to-digest foods such as crackers, toast, broth soups and plain pasta. Eating these items slowly helps to prevent symptoms from returning.
Drink fluids between but not with your meals, as drinking too much liquid with meals can lead to an overfilled stomach which is a common trigger for nausea.
Avoid strong smells or spicy and acidic foods that stimulate stomach acid production and cause discomfort.
Eat ginger or take ginger capsules or candies, as ginger has been shown to soothe an upset stomach by reducing inflammation.
Limit caffeine intake if excessive amounts are causing increased nausea and fatigue.
Try consuming foods rich in B vitamins such as leafy greens, eggs, chickpeas and fortified breakfast cereal for their anti-nausea effects.
When Should I Seek Treatment For Nausea And Vomiting During Pregnancy
If the nausea and vomiting is severe and persistent it may be more than just regular morning sickness. It could be a type of severe morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum or signs of another medical condition, such as a urinary tract infection, and may require medical attention.
Consult your obstetrician-gynecologist or other obstetric care provider if your symptoms are severe, persistent or are causing you any concerns. Especially see your doctor if you cant keep down any food or water, youre losing weight and peeing less often than usual.
Fruits And Vegetables High In Water Content
Weâve made the point that staying hydrated is one of the best ways to stop morning sickness early in pregnancy and beyond. When drinking fluids makes matters worse, try eating fruits and vegetables with high water content.
Good options to try include:
Some pregnant women say watermelon is the best fruit for morning sickness, even when nothing else stays down. In addition to being refreshing and delicious, it can ease heartburn and reduce swelling, and the minerals in it can help prevent muscle cramps. For your growing baby, watermelon is packed with vitamins A, C, B6, potassium, and magnesium, which are important for your babyâs vision, brain, and nervous and immune systems.
Another idea is to add vegetables with high water content to your broth.
Natural Remedies For Nausea
The SOGC recommends that pregnant women eat whatever they like rather than changing their diet to relieve nausea. It is better to eat a varied diet than to take vitamin supplements. In some women, nausea is attributable to the iron contained in these vitamins, explains the SOGC, which does not recommend systematic supplementation but advises that, unless there is an iron deficiency, folic acid should be preferred.
On the other hand, expectant mothers can include ginger, the anti-nausea food par excellence, in their diet, in the form of tea or tablets, or even in dishes , on the condition that you buy it in a pharmacy or an organic shop for a more reliable composition. Fresh, count ten g/day of ginger or two g/day, dried.
Acupressure is also a natural and affordable alternative: you need to stimulate the specific point P6, located three fingers width above the wrist, between the two tendons. Acupuncture can also be considered for nausea during pregnancy.

Vitamin B6 And Doxylamine
Vitamin B6 is safe and easy to find in pharmacies or grocery stores, and can help ease nausea and vomiting, according to ACOG.
Prevention is key, says Dr. Adams. Starting B6 prior to onset of symptoms, and especially one month prior to pregnancyin a prenatal vitaminhas been shown to decrease the incidence and severity of of pregnancy.
Doxylamine, a medication found in over-the-counter sleep aids, can be added if vitamin B6 alone doesnt help symptoms. Its an antihistamine, meaning it blocks certain chemicals in the body that cause nausea.
Whether you take either by itself or both together, these two drugs are safe to take during pregnancy and have no harmful effects on the fetus, states ACOG. Your doctor can prescribe a drug that combines vitamin B6 and doxylamine.
If youre taking B6 alone, take 10 to 25 milligrams every six to eight hours, says Dr. Adams, who adds that the maximum dose of vitamin B6 in pregnancy is 200 milligrams a day. In combination with doxylamine is Diclegis , which is 10 milligrams of B6 and 10 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take this nightly, and may increase to up to four times daily, she says. Another form is Bonjesta, which contains 20 milligrams of B6 and 20 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take up to two tablets daily, she says.
My Personal Morning Sickness Experiences
For my first pregnancy I had morning sickness for exactly the first three months. Although it wasnt MORNING sickness, it was evening sickness. I would be fine all day until dinner, then throw up. It really wasnt all that terrible. Annoying, but pretty predictable and once I threw up Id feel ok again.
My second pregnancy was way more tough. The first 3 months I was nauseous all the time, but never threw up. Which seems to just make the nausea go on and on. Unless I chewed gum. For some reason the sweetness would put me right over the edge and would immediately be running to the bathroom to puke. And I have a massive gum chewing addiction, so that was a bit rough.
Then after a full trimester of relief, the nausea came back for my entire 3rd trimester! I didnt even know that was possible until I experienced it. But I found that it is actually quite normal to have 3rd trimester morning sickness.
My second pregnancy gave me the opportunity to try out all kinds of methods to ease nausea.
Even though you may not be able to completely eliminate nausea in pregnancy, it is so helpful to have multiple tools to relieve or reduce the debilitating symptom of nausea.
