Can You Get Pregnant After Essure Removal

Does My Insurance Pay

Getting Pregnant After Reversal Surgery: Advice!

The Essure removal and reversal procedure can cost anywhere typically $7,000-7,500, and insurance does not cover it. However, you may be eligible to claim the cost of surgery in compensation if you have suffered serious side effects because of Essure, especially if you have had to have a hysterectomy due to the severity of the damage.

If you plan to claim compensation, you will often need your coils to be returned to you. You can send a written notification to the pathology department for your coils to be returned prior to surgery from your doctor and from yourself . If your state hospital doesnt allow specimens to be returned directly to you as a patient, then request that the pathology lab retain them indefinitely for litigation purposes your attorney can send a letter requesting the coils. Any coil fragments left behind can result in further complication, so you want to make sure all parts of the coil have been removed the first time.

The Essure Removal Process

Essure removal can be simple or complicated, so its very important that you seek the help of an expert in this area. Our own Dr. Otero has successfully performed this surgery many times and has the experience you need.

If you decide that Essure removal is the best solution, there are several ways we approach the removal depending upon the location of the coils and how much scar tissue has developed.

In a best-case scenario, Dr. Otero can remove the coils using a hysteroscope, a thin cannula thats equipped with a camera and a light.

If ample scar tissue has formed around the coils, Dr. Otero may have to cut into your fallopian tubes to remove the coils, which is called a salpingostomy. If the involvement between the coils and your fallopian tubes is great, Dr. Otero may recommend a salpingectomy, a procedure in which he removes your fallopian tubes.

Another possibility is a laparoscopic cornual resection in which Dr. Otero removes a portion of the cornua, the area of your uterus where the fallopian tubes connect.

One of the primary reasons why there are different approaches to Essure removal is because there have been problems with removal, as the coils can easily break apart, leading to more serious complications down the road. Dr. Otero understands this challenge and uses the tools and techniques necessary to safely remove your Essure coils.

Spontaneous Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation What Are The Chances

The chances of getting pregnant naturally after a tubal ligation are low and thats generally a good thing. After all, people typically have tubal ligations as a form of permanent birth control. But, those odds might not be as low as you would expect.

According to a large study that followed over 10,000 women with tubal ligations, 143 sterilization failures were reported . While thats only about 1.5%, its probably higher than you would suspect given tubal ligations are often advertised as a near foolproof form of permanent birth control. What Is An Endometrial Ablation

A few people reading this will wonder, What the heck is an endometrial ablation?Usually, if you had an ablation of your uterine lining you will know what it is all about. If you dont know anything about an ablation then you probably never had the procedure.

Endometrial ablation is a treatment for heavy periods.

The only person who should get an endometrial ablation is a woman who is having periods so heavy they are causing her to be anemic .

Many women will commonly develop heavier periods as they become older. Often the iron lost during excessive menstruation is enough to make these women anemic. They are unable to keep up with iron loss through diet or iron supplements.

An endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure to decrease menstrual flow in women who are anemic because of excessive bleeding during their periods. Endometrial ablation is only recommended for these women when they dont want to become pregnant again.

Women with heavy periods have several options: birth control pills, hysterectomy, or endometrial ablation.

Many women will choose to have an endometrial ablation procedure to avoid a major surgery like hysterectomy.

Thermachoice ballon ablation

An endometrial ablation procedure is often simple, quick, and can often be done in a doctors office. The doctor burns the uterine lining to remove it.if you remove the uterine lining then you either stop having periods or your period flow decreases and you dont lose as much blood/iron every month.

Side Effects Of The Essure Device

Essure Removal and Essure Reversal

We have been contacted by many Essure patients who are experiencing adverse reactions from the Essure device. Some of these issues include heavy bleeding, hair loss, cramping, joint problems and a metallic taste in their mouth, etc. We do not guarantee that Essure Removal will change any particular symptom, but the results we have gathered from patients following their procedure indicates that it is very helpful.

We urge people considering an Essure to be tested for allergy to nickel, especially if they have had skin reactions to gold jewelry before. Most people do very well with Essures, but those who do have problems are very unhappy with their choice.

Essure does not have to be permanent and does not require a hysterectomy or removal of the complete fallopian tube to do so. Please call or email our office to speak with a Case Management Specialist if you have any additional questions.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Essure Removal

Laparoscopic complete salpingectomy for Essure removal takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, and is an outpatient surgery. Only three to four small puncture incisions are made, and you go home the same day. Most of the recovery happens in the first 2 to 3 days, and full recovery time is approximately 2 weeks.

Hysterectomy With Bilateral Salpingectomy

Fallopian Tubes Removed Still Have Period

The only way to guarantee the entire Essure length is removed without risk of breaking the coils is to have hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy. This is removal of the uterus, cervix, and both fallopian tubes together. While the vast majority of patients who have a laparoscopic complete salpingectomy are able to have the entire length of the coils removed, it may be appropriate in some circumstances to remove the entire uterus to ensure no part of the coils is left behind.

This is an option up front for some of you, and also an option during the procedure if problems arise when removing the coils. Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy can be performed as an open surgery, laparoscopically, or even vaginally.

One Tube No Tubes Even More Problems

Shannas remaining fallopian tube provided her and her husband, Gerard, a good chance of conceiving naturally. Some time after her tubal torsion experience, when Shanna had finished her residency, they tried again and Shanna was soon pregnant. But there was a problem.

I kind of knew from the beginning that something was wrong, and that I might have had an ectopic pregnancy, says Shanna.

In an ectopic pregnancy, rather than the embryo implanting in the uterus, it implants outside the uterus, most often in the fallopian tube, which is what had happened to Shannas embryo. An ectopic pregnancy cannot be carried to term and is a life-threatening situation to the mother, because the embryo grows and ruptures the fallopian tube.

How to recognize an ectopic pregnancy

My OB/GYN decided to treat me medically, with methotrexate, a medication to help my body process the ectopic pregnancy. My doctor cleared me to do whatever I wanted to do. A couple of weeks later, I was at my moms house, about to hop on a plane and go to Hawaii, Shanna says. But the ectopic ruptured, and I almost died.

Shanna went to the ER, again in great pain, with severe internal bleeding. The team performed emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and save her life.

Within a year after her ectopic pregnancy, she had finished one round of retrieving and freezing her eggs. A few months later, she and Gerard completed a frozen embryo cycle. Unfortunately, the cycle wasnt successful.

Should uterine fibroids be removed before or after pregnancy? Ask Mayo Clinic

One patient had unexplained abdominal pain 72 hours after reversal and underwent a laparoscopy by her local doctor with normal post surgical findings. She subsequently became pregnant and delivered a healthy baby . None of our patients reported ectopic pregnancy or uterine rupture as delayed complications after Essure reversal.

Tubouterine implantation has been the historical gold standard for reversal of proximal tubal occlusion but has also been associated with an increased risk of uterine rupture during labor. For maximal safety of both mother and baby, we advise our Essure reversal patients to have a scheduled cesarean delivery with future pregnancies to minimize the possible risk of uterine rupture during labor.

Our experience demonstrates outpatient reversal of Essure at our center is safe.

Removing The Essure Coils

If youre experiencing any of the above complications or side effects, it may be in your best interest to have your Essure implant removed. In general, the device is easier to remove within the first three months after your initial procedure, and Dr. Swainston can discuss alternative birth control methods with you.

Removing the Essure coils is a relatively quick procedure. General anesthesia is administered, then Dr. Swainston creates a small hole in each of your fallopian tubes and removes the coils before closing the incisions. The entire procedure takes just an hour.

Dr. Swainston performs the removal with the help of robotics. This means you can look forward to smaller scars, a faster procedure, and quicker recovery. Many patients also report less pain after robotic surgery compared with traditional surgery.

Removing the coils does require the expertise of a gynecologic surgeon. The few risks associated with removal are minimized when you seek care from a gynecologist such as Dr. Swainston, who has the expertise needed for safe Essure removal.
