If youre under 16 and want contraception, the doctor, nurse or pharmacist wont tell your parents as long as they believe you fully understand the information youre given, and your decisions.
Doctors and nurses work under strict guidelines when dealing with people under 16. Theyll encourage you to consider telling your parents, but they wont make you.
The only time a professional might want to tell someone else is if they believe youre at risk of harm, such as abuse. The risk would need to be serious, and they would usually discuss this with you first.

Symptoms After Nexplanon Removal: What Can You Expect
Nexplanon is a flexible, etonogestrel-containing, rod that is implanted within the inner side of your upper arm and that provides reliable contraception for up to three years. While Nexplanon is an extremely convenient form of birth control, every woman who uses it will have to have the implant removed sooner or later.
Other Fertility Factors To Consider
As a rule of thumb, your fertility should go back to the way it was before you started birth control. If you had regular cycles before, you should have regular cycles again.
Your age may also play a part. That is because fertility drops as you get older. This is especially true once you turn 35.
There has been a lot of research on the return of fertility after stopping birth control. A review of studies showed that birth control use does not harm fertility. Pregnancy rates within one year of stopping birth control look like this:
- Birth control pill: 72% to 94%
- Condom/barrier method: 94%
- Progestin-only birth control: 70% to 95%
- Natural family planning: 92%
- IUD: 71% to 96%

How Long Does It Take For The Implant To Start Working
Its immediately effective if inserted during the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle, which starts with the first day of bleeding. The implant is effective after 7 days if it is inserted at any other time in the menstrual cycle. Other contraceptive measures such as condoms should be used for these 7 days.
How Does Nexplanon Work
Nexplanon is a type of contraception that is small in size and thin rod-shaped. Its appearance is similar to that of a matchstick.
An older version of nexplanon is available that is called Implanon. The implant is inserted intradermally in the upper arm of the patient. This implant releases a hormone named progestin that prevents a woman from getting pregnant.
The hormones that are released by nexplanon prevents pregnancy in two significant ways. These are:
Sperms swim in the uterus to meet an egg or ova to fertilize. But due to the thickening of the mucus membrane, they fail to swim and thus can not fertilize with the egg. When the sperm fails to reach the ova then fertilization does not occur and thus one cannot get pregnant.
The process of the eggs or ova leaving the ovaries and entering into the uterus is known as ovulation. Sperm meets the ova in the uterus and thus causes pregnancy after fertilization. If the ova does not enter the uterus then the sperm would not be able to meet the ova.
Thus, fertilization and pregnancy will not occur.

Advantage Of Using Nexplanon
Nexplanon is convenient and effective as it is a one-time use method that needs to be replaced in 3-5 years.
- It is 99% effective and long-term protection against pregnancy. It works as well as IUDs and sterilization. There can be no errors in the use, and there are no repercussions like the pill if you forget to take it.
- The implant is private and convenient. Once its inside, you dont have to think about it and it will work until expiration or removal. This also means that there is no pill to take daily or a ring to put, no trips to the pharmacy for contraception, and you can have sex any time you want. The implant is not visible against the skin, so no one needs to know you are on it, keeping your privacy intact.
- Nexplanon has only one hormone in it, whereas many hormonal birth control devices and methods use two hormones estrogen and progestin. Some women with health issues cannot use estrogen. So, they can freely use Nexplanon as it is estrogen-free.
- These implants can make the menstrual cycle better for women. Nexplanon helps in reducing period cramps and pain. The periods one does get is also quite light, and one-third of the users stop getting the period after one year.
- Fertility is not affected if you remove this implant. Women can get pregnant again after removing the implant. It is a reversible birth control method. It is very much possible that the woman gets pregnant as soon as the implant is out.

Just because youve had infertility issues, it doesnt necessarily mean youre infertile. It could just mean that you have a very low chance of conceiving naturally which means theres still a chance.

Review Your Insurance Benefits
Once your Arbor ObGyn provider requests it, your insurance carrier is contacted to obtain benefits for the Nexplanon device requested and its insertion and/or replacement. Arbor purchases the Nexplanon and your insurance reimburses us at a contracted rate. The Nexplanon cost and the actual insertion/removal procedure are separate charges. Once obtained, your Nexplanon benefits are sent to you via a separate message located in your Patient Portal. Please log in to the Patient Portal to review.
There is usually no separate office visit charge in addition to the charge for the Nexplanon placement. Your 4-8 week follow-up visit is considered an office visit however, and will require your standard co-pay as determined by your insurance carrier.
Insurance pre-authorization is not required, but we do contact and carefully review insurance benefits as a courtesy to you. On rare occasions an Insurance Carrier may not pay as quoted. Therefore, you may consider contacting your Insurance Carrier directly to confirm the information we have been given, and that it will be valid on the date of the Nexplanon procedure. If your insurance claim is denied for any reason after the device is placed you will still be responsible for fees which will exceed $1,000. Does The Hormonal Iud Affect Future Fertility
The short answer: The hormonal IUD doesnt affect future fertility.
The long answer: The Intrauterine Device is a small contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus. This hormonal IUD works more like other hormonal contraceptives . Hormonal IUDs use the synthetic hormone progestin to thicken the cervical mucus, stopping sperm from travelling to the egg and often preventing ovulation.
Like other hormonal methods, most women show a quick return to fertility after using Mirena, and dont experience any long term fertility problems associated with uncomplicated use of the IUD.
Many women voice concerns about infection and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease . In the case of new IUDs, the risk of PID and infection is very low infection can occur in the weeks following insertion but is usually mild and can be treated with oral antibiotics.

Anecdotally, some women who have recently had Nexplanon removed report unpleasant “side effects” of the removal. These reported side effects of Nexplanon removal include irregular periods, pelvic cramping and pain, migraines, severe mood swings, depression, anxiety, acne, and spontaneous weight loss.

The “side effects” you are experiencing can be explained by three things:
- Hormonal contraceptives themselves have side effects. These cease when you stop using the contraceptive. If you gained weight while using Nexplanon, it is only natural that you lose it once you have it removed.
- Hormonal contraceptives have secondary benefits such as managing irregular periods, PMS, acne, and excessive hair growth. Any hormone-related side effects you had before you got Nexplanon are extremely likely to return once you have it removed. If you had Nexplanon for a long time, you may not remember what it was like to have natural menstrual cycles.
- It takes a while for your natural hormonal balance to restore itself after you stop using hormonal contraceptives. Your menstrual cycles may, indeed, temporarily become irregular.
Fertility Does Not Equal Pregnancy
You may not get pregnant right away even after your fertility returns. Some people become pregnant within a month. Others may try to get pregnant for a long time.
At this point, your ability to get pregnant has nothing to do with previous birth control use. Your age, health, and lifestyle can all make it harder to get pregnant. You may also experience infertility.
You may have concerns after you stop birth control. Talk to your healthcare provider if:
- Your period doesnt come back after three months
- The number of days you have your period changes
- Your cycle is irregular
- There is a major change in how heavy your bleeding is
- You are younger than 35 and have been trying to get pregnant for 12 months

What Exactly Is Implanon
Implanon is a small rod of flexible plastic. It looks just like a matchstick from one of those matchbooks people collect from restaurants. It is 4 cms long and 2 mms wide and small enough to be very disceet when it is in place, inserted just under the woman’s skin. The plastic rod is infused with etonogestrel which is a synthetic female hormone, very similar to progesterone. And it is this hormone which prevents conception from occurring. Etonogestrel is slowly released into the bloodstream from the rod for about three years, after which time it either needs to be removed or a new one inserted.
Implanon cannot dissolve and won t travel anywhere until it is removed. It also contains a small amount of barium sulphate which makes it clearly visible on x-ray. Very occasionally, it is necessary for women to have an x-ray or ultrasound so that the exact location can be found.
It is important that the Implanon is easily felt under the skin. This means it can be easily located and seen as a slightly raised rectangular rod just under the surface of the skin. Implanon is most commonly inserted just above the elbow joint, on the inside aspect of the upper arm.
What Are The Side Effects Of Nexplanon
The common side effects that a lot of implants face are Changes in menstrual bleeding, Headache, Vaginal infections, Acne, Weight gain, Breast tenderness or pain, hair loss, nervousness, dizziness, increased appetite, Irritation or pain at site of implant. In a few cases there might be few more severe and uncommon side effects such as breast enlargement, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, oedema and constipation. In very rare cases side effects can also be blood clot formation, liver disease and rise in blood pressure.

Will It Hurt To Have The Implanon Removed
You will need to have a local anaesthetic injection into the skin around the Implanon to numb the area. Local anaesthetic injections can sting and take a few minutes to be effective. You may want to speak with your pharmacist or GP about using local anaesthetic skin patches before the injections.
A small cut of around 2-3 mm is made and the Implanon is removed with a pair of surgical tweezers. If the area has been properly anesthetised you should not feel anything other than a little pulling and tension. You may need to have a stitch inserted if the cut was big enough but generally this is not necessary. In most women, the skin edges sit closely together and heal neatly. Occasionally, a minute scar is left but with time this will fade to white and become barely noticeable.
Occasionally, Implanon is inserted too deeply which results in a more difficult removal. If the Implanon cant be felt then it is sometimes necessary to have an ultrasound or an x-ray to locate exactly where it is under the skin. Once this is clear, then it is easier to target its exact location and then remove it.

When Do You Stop Having Period After Implanon Removal
When you have Implanon implanted, once it is in there a while, your hormone levels stay pretty steady the first year and you may stop having periods, the second year the levels begin to drop some so you may see irregular periods and then finally toward time for removal and replacement you may be having regular periods.
Who Can Use The Implant
Most women can be fitted with the contraceptive implant.
It may not be suitable if you:
- think you might be pregnant
- donât want your periods to change
- take other medicines that may affect the implant
- have unexplained bleeding in between periods or after sex
- have arterial disease or a history of heart disease or stroke

Are There Any Side Effects From Using The Implant
When the implant is first inserted and when it is removed, you may have some bruising and tenderness on your arm. This may last for up to a week. Wearing a bandage over your arm for 24 hours helps reduce bruising and tenderness. You may also develop a small scar where the implant was inserted and removed.
Your vaginal bleeding pattern will change. It might be more often and/or irregular . Around 20% of people using the implant will have no bleeding at all . Around 20% of people have frequent or prolonged bleeding which may get better with time. Some medications can help with this bleeding, speak to your doctor or nurse for more information.
Other possible side effects for a small number of users can include:
- headaches
- sore/ tender breasts
- mood changes.
These side effects often settle with time. The implant has not been shown to cause weight gain.
When It Starts To Work
You can have the implant put in at any time during your menstrual cycle, as long as youre not pregnant.
If the implant is fitted during the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle, youll be immediately protected against becoming pregnant.
If its fitted on any other day of your menstrual cycle, youll need to use additional contraception for 7 days.
