How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant After Going Off The Pill
You can get pregnant within a month of quitting the pill, whether youre taking combined hormone pills, which contain both estrogen and progestin, or progestin-only pills, says Nicole Todd, an OB-GYN at BC Womens Hospital + Health Centre and Vancouver General Hospital. The best time to get pregnant
You can stop taking the pill at any point in the pack. If youve been taking combined hormone pills, which thicken your cervical mucus and change your uterine lining while preventing ovulation, you could start ovulating again one week after quitting.
Depending on the length of your cycle, you could start developing an egg a week after, which would be released about a week after that. If you time things right, you could potentially conceive two weeks after giving up the pill. But Todd notes that waiting a month before trying to conceive will make it easier to date your pregnancy because youll know the timing of your last period.

But quitting the pill offers a faster return to fertility than Depo-Provera, a progestin-containing birth control method thats injected every three months.

Having a regular menstrual cycle is the most obvious sign that ovulation has started. Your menstrual cycle lasts from the first day of your period to the first day of your next period. Your cycles are considered regular or normal when they meet the following conditions:
- Duration: Your periods last 8 days or fewer
- Flow volume: You lose between 2 to 3 tablespoons of menstrual fluid during each period. Just spotting could be a sign that youâre not ovulating.
- Frequency: Your periods typically come every 24 to 38 days . This means that from the first day of your last period up to the start of your next period is at least 24 days but no more than 38 days.
- Regularity: Your cycles are consistent from month to month. For example, your cycle is 27 days long one month, and 29 the next. Cycles that vary in length by more than 7 to 9 days are considered irregular.

How Long Will It Take You To Conceive After Stopping Birth Control
BU researchers find little or no lasting effect on fecundity from long-term use of contraceptives
Women and their partners hoping to conceive a baby after using contraception should expect a waitand just how long will vary based on their contraceptive method. So found a recent BU-led study, published in theUK journal BMJ.
The longest waitfor those who used injectable contraceptivesaveraged five to eight months, as these contraceptives suppress ovulation, the researchers wrote. The shortest average wait, two months, was for users of intrauterine devices . Pill takers waited an average of three months, while women who used contraceptive patches waited an average of four months. The study combined data from three other studiesof almost 18,000 women, from Denmark and North America, who planned pregnancies between 2007 and 2019 and who shared details of their contraceptive, medical, and lifestyle histories for the researchers.
Our results, although imprecise, indicate little or no lasting effect of long-term use of these methods on fecundability, say the authors of the study, which involved BU researchers Jennifer Yland , who oversaw most of the statistical analysis. study senior author Lauren Wise, a School of Public Health professor of epidemiology, and Kathryn Bresnick . They collaborated with Bostons Brigham & Womens Hospital and Denmarks Aarhus University. Yland discussed the results with BU Today.
Does Birth Control Affect Fertility Long
Many women wonder if years of birth control will cause fertility problems later in life. The good news is that long-term use of birth control pills should not impact your ability to get pregnant.
The hormones in the pill only stay in your body a short time, which is why you need to take one every day for the pill to be effective. So once you stop, you should return to your normal cycle, and your ability to get pregnant, within a few months, says Dr. Tiffany Bersani, a board-certified OBGYN with Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists in Beaufort and Okatie. One exception is the birth control shot.
If you are using Depo-Provera it may take as long as six to 12 months after your last shot before your normal cycles return, and some women experience disruptions to their fertility for up to 18 months.
Be sure to let your provider know your plans to start a family so you can explore other alternatives for birth control ahead of time, Dr. Bersani says.
While infertility should not be a concern in terms of birth control use, Dr. Bersani says there are other risks of long-term usage. Some birth control pills may increase the risk of stroke, blood clots and heart attack in women who are already at risk for these things. There is also evidence that taking the pill may increase the risk for breast and cervical cancer. On the other hand, it may reduce the risk of ovarian, colorectal and endometrial cancers.

Does The Depo Shot Cause Temporary Infertility
The Depo shot suppresses ovulation by increasing the level of progesterone in the body. As a result, it can cause temporary infertility for up to 2 years. Once all the progesterone in the body is eliminated, your fertility will return, and your body will resume ovulating and menstruating. Many women tend to resume their regular monthly cycle 5 months after their last Depo injections. However, it may take up to 22 months for some women to regain their fertility post the last injection.
Another aspect that comes into play with regards to fertility is the weight of the woman. It appears that fertility returns more quickly in women of healthy weight than those who are overweight. Also, it doesnt matter whether youve used the Depo-Provera shot for about 6 months or even for a couple of years your fertility will most likely return in the same time period, in both cases.

Other Things To Think About
Hormone levels are very low while using Depo Provera, so there is some concern that this may lead to thinning of the bones in women who use Depo Provera for a long period of time. The importance of this is not yet known, but the changes would be expected to happen more slowly than those that occur normally after menopause and reverse after the injections stop.
Although it is extremely difficult to prove a complete lack of risk, Depo Provera has not been shown to have any effect on the risk of breast cancer. It should be noted that protective effects against cancer of the ovary and uterine lining are very likely. No ill effects on the developing baby have been shown to occur if Depo Provera is given when a woman is already pregnant or in the very rare case where a woman becomes pregnant despite the injection.

They work by preventing sperm from reaching eggs. When you stop taking the pill, your body returns to its normal cycle of estrogen and progesterone. If you try to conceive too soon after stopping the pill, there is a chance that it will take more than 12 weeks to completely remove these hormones from your system. That’s why many women should wait at least three months before they attempt to get pregnant.
The risk of pregnancy complications increases if you try to become pregnant too soon after stopping the pill. This is because your body is not yet back to its normal balance of hormones and may not be able to handle the stress of a baby growing inside of it.
