What To Know About Drinking Before You Know You’re Pregnant

What to know about drinking before you know you’re pregnant? While we all know that drinking during pregnancy can inflict long-lasting damage on a baby, the effect of alcohol on a developing embryo before a woman knows she’s pregnant has been less studied. Now, provocative new research on mice suggests that a mother’s drinking — even in the first three weeks of pregnancy — may create changes in the genes of the embryo that can cause permanent damage.

When to stop drinking alcohol while trying to conceive? Men and women should stop drinking alcohol six months prior to trying to conceive to be in the best reproductive health possible. It may come as a shock to some, but consuming alcohol is something that neither a woman nor a man should be doing when trying to conceive.

Can drinking alcohol prevent pregnancy? Drinking alcohol can reduce both mens and womens fertility. Even drinking lightly can reduce the chance of pregnancy. Heavy drinking increases the time it takes to get pregnant and reduces the chances of having a healthy baby.

Is it safe to drink during early pregnancy? Clearly alcohol use can cause major problems for the pregnant woman and her baby. While not drinking any alcohol during pregnancy is the safest choice, small amounts of alcohol early in pregnancy may be less risky to the mothers health and the health of their babies than previously believed.

8 Drinks and Beverages You Should Avoid During Pregnancy

Safe drinking water is the best thing you can drink while pregnant, but let’s be honest sometimes you want something that’s, you know, not water. Orange juice has been found to be a great choice for pregnant women. Be sure to choose an OJ that’s been fortified with calcium as this is vital for bone health, registered dietitian Natalie B. Allen told The List. The citrusy beverage also contains potassium, which can help lower high blood pressure, a potentially dangerous condition in pregnant women.

Orange juice also works well when taken with your prenatal vitamin. The expert explained, “The Vitamin C in the juice will enhance iron absorption and orange juice also contains folate, which is important in neurological fetal development.” Washing down your prenatal vitamin with orange juice is good for another reason. Medical News Today revealed that iron supplements can cause nausea. The Vitamin C in the juice not only enhances the absorption, as Allen explained, but also helps reduce queasiness. Before you run out to buy all the OJ, you should make sure to choose one that is pasteurized as this will minimize the risk of any harmful food pathogens.

Can Drinking Affect Fertility

If you’re wondering whether a few occasional drinks will have an adverse effect on your fertility, the evidence is still unclear.

Some studies have found that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol daily can significantly increase the risk of infertility. For example, a 2017 study showed that women who drank less than one serving of alcohol per day had a lower risk of infertility compared to women who consumed more alcohol.

Conversely, a study published in Fertility and Sterility in 2017 showed that low-level red wine consumptionless than five 6-ounce servings per monthwas associated with increased ovarian reserve among women with regular menstrual cycles who were not yet pregnant.

Researchers linked the boost in women’s fertility to the anti-inflammatory properties of resveratrol, a naturally occurring polyphenol found in red wine. In this particular study, no subject drank more than 15 glasses of wine in a month.

Some studies have suggested that occasional alcohol consumption can increase fertility, while others indicate that long-term consumption can lead to diminished ovarian reserve among women of reproductive age.

With regards to fertility, most practitioners indicate that when it comes to food, alcohol, and caffeine consumption, moderation is key. So, having an occasional glass of wine with dinner, for example, is not something most doctors advise their patients against. But of course, they don’t recommend drinking more and never recommend binge-drinking .

How Well Does Emergency Contraception Work

About 1 or 2 in every 100 women who use ECPs will become pregnant despite taking the pills within 72 hours after having unprotected sex.

The “morning-after” name is somewhat misleading: You don’t have to wait until the next morning to take ECPs. Emergency contraception is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

Emergency contraception will not prevent pregnancy if unprotected sex happens after taking the ECPs.

Emergency contraception does not prevent all pregnancies. So a girl should see a doctor if she doesn’t get her next expected period after taking ECPs.

It is the first study to look at this according to the difference phases of women’s menstrual cycles.

Researchers led by Dr Kira Taylor, associate professor of epidemiology and population health at the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences , analysed data from the Mount Sinai Study of Women Office Workers. Women aged 19-41 years were recruited between 1990 and 1994 and followed for a maximum of 19 menstrual cycles. The women completed daily diaries reporting how much alcohol they drank and what type, and they provided urine samples on the first and second day of each menstrual cycle in order to check for pregnancy.
