You may have heard it takes at least three months for ovulation to start up again after you stop the pill. This is not usually true. For most people, ovulation will start within weeks. For some, though, it can take one to three months.
Think about it like this: The pill works because it stops ovulation. If you miss a couple of pills, you might ovulate and you might get pregnant. Some healthcare providers even say you are most fertile just after you stop taking the pill.
So where does the three-month myth come from? Your healthcare provider may tell you to use a condom until you have had three periods. This is just because waiting will help you keep track of your cycle. That way, if you get pregnant, it will be easier to guess when the pregnancy happened.
There is no medical reason to wait after you stop birth control before trying to become pregnant. Just be prepared that your fertility may return within the first month.
NuvaRing and the Patch work the same way as the pill, so the same goes for these methods. Fertility should return quickly. Most research shows that 80% of people who stop using these methods and want to get pregnant will get pregnant within the first year. This number is the same as that of the general population.
Not Taking The Pills At The Same Time Each Day
In addition to taking birth control pills daily, a person should take the pills at about the same time each day. Doing so can maintain their hormone levels more consistently.
A person should always take the minipill within the same 3-hour time window every day. Someone who misses their usual window should use a backup birth control method for the next 7 days or avoid having sex.
Many people set a daily alarm reminding them to take their pill at the correct time each day.
How Does Birth Control Work With Ivf
Birth control pills function by suppressing a womans hormones and preventing ovulation, thereby making pregnancy impossible or extremely unlikely.
Specifically, Dr. Doherty explained, birth control pills prevent the growth and development of a womans follicles and keep her endometrial lining thin.
Without the development of one primary or lead follicle, ovulation will not occur, and without an adequate uterine lining, the embryo will not successfully implant inside the womans endometrium.
This baseline state is optimal for the start of IVF fertility treatment, where the goal of IVF is to grow as many follicles as possible in one cycle. After stopping birth control pills, self-administered hormone injections are used to stimulate the growth of the ovarian follicles.
This coordinated growth allows us to maximize the number of mature fertilizable eggs at the time of egg retrieval, Dr. Doherty said. By preventing a front-runner or lead follicle from developing by using a birth control pill, the follicles that develop during ovarian stimulation tend to be more synchronized.

Get A General Health Check
Planning a pregnancy is a good chance for both parents to get a full health check. If your doctor plans to prescribe you new medications or antibiotics, remind them that you are planning a pregnancy.
If there is a family history of medical conditions on either side, such as cystic fibrosis or diabetes, let your doctor know. You may need genetic counselling with a trained specialist or referral for diabetic specialist preparation to pregnancy.
Some sexually transmitted infections can be passed on to your baby during pregnancy, so make sure you have both been treated for any infections before planning to conceive.
If the mother has a medical condition such as diabetes or epilepsy, or is being treated for depression or other mental illness, medications for these will need to be checked before conceiving to make sure they will not affect the baby.
Can You Get Pregnant Straight After Coming Off The Pill
As weve already discussed it can take up to three months for your body to get back to its normal cycle. But this doesnt mean you wont get pregnant in those first three months if you dont use another form of contraception.
Dont forget that clinicians advise you use condoms when having sex if:
- you miss two or more consecutive combined pills
- you miss a mini pill and youre outside of your window .
This shows us just how quickly you might be able to get pregnant.
So, if you stop taking your pill and you dont want to get pregnant, please remember to use condoms or another form of contraception.

Sterilisation is generally considered a permanent contraceptive, and is only recommended for women who are absolutely sure they dont want to have children. There is a reversal process for sterilisation, though fertility is not the same following a reversal.
