Does It Pass Over To The Baby
Unfortunately, naproxen does make its way into the placenta and consequently the fetus through your bloodstream. According to a study of 28 women who requested a surgical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, traces of naproxen were found in maternal venous blood, coelomic fluid, amniotic fluid and fetal tissue. However, only a small amount was observed in fetal tissues. Fda Issues Strengthened Guidelines On Pain Reliever Use Among Pregnant Women
The FDA announced in a Drug Safety Communication that it is requiring label changes for common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil and Aleve, the Associated Press reports. According to the announcement, pregnant women should avoid this class of drugs during the last 4 months of pregnancy. Previous warnings cautioned against use during the last 3 months of pregnancy. The FDA said the drugs can cause a rare but serious complication that may harm the fetus and can lead to kidney problems in the fetus, which can result in low levels of amniotic fluid in the womb. However, the warning does not apply to low-dose aspirin when recommended by a doctor.

Some medications, like the antihypertensive lisinopril and the mood stabilizer Depakote, have known safety risks in pregnancy and will need to be switched out for safer alternatives. We recommend that health care professionals should limit prescribing NSAIDs between 20 to 30 weeks of pregnancy and avoid prescribing them after 30 weeks of pregnancy. If NSAID treatment is determined necessary, limit use to the lowest effective dose and shortest duration possible. Consider ultrasound monitoring of amniotic fluid if NSAID treatment extends beyond 48 hours and discontinue the NSAID if oligohydramnios is found.

Does Aleve Cause Birth Defects When Taken In The First Trimester
Not likely. The results from a few large studies on aleve did not show an increased chance for birth defects. A small increased chance for heart defects has been reported in some studies looking at aleve and other NSAIDs in early pregnancy. Other factors such as the health condition for which aleve was taken, could also be the cause. A small association with cleft lip and palate and aleve use has also been reported but cannot be proven. In another study where 23 pregnant women took aleve everyday to help treat lupus and arthritis, there were no birth defects seen in the babies.
Are There Any Side Effects

What Can Pregnant People Take For Yeast Infections
Yeast infections are common during pregnancy, and while the condition won’t harm the baby, the last thing you want to do is suffer through the itchy discomfort. “There is some absorption of vaginal creams into the body and bloodstream, but doses are low and no studies show any effect on baby,” says Dr. Park. She adds that some doctors don’t prescribe the oral pill Diflucan or fluconazole because observational studies show that parents who have had to take extended doses for chronic fungal infections have had babies with birth defects. . However, it’s safe to take this oral yeast infection medication when breastfeeding, especially if you get the fungal infection known as thrush from your baby.

Are There Any Other Risks For Mother And Baby
Taken during pregnancy, NSAIDs like naproxen sodium can possibly cause adverse maternal and fetal effects. Risks for the mother include a prolonged pregnancy and labor. For the baby, it could mean constriction of the ductus arteriosus , kidney dysfunction and hemostatic abnormalities. These can occur at the fetal or newborn stage.8
When consumed during late pregnancy, the adverse effects also include a decrease in the volume of amniotic fluid and putting a newborn at risk of pulmonary hypertension.9
Therefore, naproxen use during pregnancy is a big no-no in the third trimester. Any kind of treatment of such NSAIDs is advised to be discontinued at 32 weeks of gestation.10
What If I Take Aleve Before I Realize I’m Pregnant
If you took Aleve for a headache or other pain before you knew you were pregnant, you will probably be fine. Just stop taking it and let your doctor know.
If you made it to the second trimester without realizing you were pregnant, your doctor may want to measure your amniotic fluid levels. Discontinuing Aleve and other NSAID drugs can reverse decreased amniotic fluid in as little as one to two days, according to Alan Lindemann, MD, an obstetrician and maternal mortality expert and the author of Modern Medicine: What Youre Dying to Know.
