Beginning Your Pregnancy Journey

Once youâve calculated your due date, you can get a better idea of when to expect your little one â and start to plan accordingly.

If you havenât done so already, one of the first steps you should take is to schedule an appointment with your doctor, who can confirm that you’re pregnant with a blood test and physical exam, and also help you establish a more precise due date.

At each following prenatal care appointment, you’ll be examined to determine the size of your uterus, and to monitor your little one’s development. Pregnancy milestones such as hearing your babyâs first heartbeat and seeing your baby via ultrasound will be a thrilling part of these checkups. Along the way, depending on what is observed, your pregnancy due date may be adjusted.

While your doctor will be able to advise you best, there are still plenty of things you can do as soon as you discover youâre pregnant. Explore the rest of our site to find out more.

When Is The Earliest Time To Take An Early Home Pregnancy Test

As women all have different ovulation and menstrual cycles, if you know the date you ovulated and the average length of your menstrual cycle it can help you choose the day to take an early pregnancy test.

The earliest times for testing are:

DPO = Days Past Ovulation

The best times to test while not sacrificing too much accuracy:

DPO = Days Past Ovulation

Figure Out Your Ovulation Date First

First, consider your average cycle length. Use that to calculate your approximate ovulation date:

This calculation is used because the luteal phase is generally around 14 days, even if your cycle is longer than 28 days.

For example, if you have a 30-day cycle, you probably ovulated around cycle day 16. If you have a 34-day cycle, you probably ovulated around cycle day 20.

Add this number of days to the date of the first day of your last period. Using the corresponding date as your known ovulation date, use this ovulation equation:

Example: Say the first day of your last period was May 2. Your cycle length is usually 30 days. This means you may have ovulated on 30 14 = cycle day 16, or May 17. Your expected implantation date would be around May 17 + 9 days = May 26.

Another way to get your date of ovulation is to use our ovulation calculator retrospectively.

BFP!!! Pregnancy Calculator Question

Your doctor should schedule a blood test to confirm your pregnancy. As for a home urine test – in this case, patience is a virtue. The longer you wait, the higher probability that your result is real, and not a false-positive. To calculate the estimated date when your pregnancy test should turn positive, the pregnancy calculator on this page will serve you well.

The theory:

IVF and ICSI were a major breakthrough in medicine. A patient undergoing IVF treatment receives multiple treatments, which completely changes her hormonal environment.

At the beginning of an IVF cycle, we need to induce the development of multiple eggs – we can achieve this with artificial hormones. After the body begins to respond to this, we need to supply other hormones to prevent ovulation, allowing for the eggs to mature. We harvest the eggs after 36 hours. That is the moment where the eggs are fertilized with sperm.

After fertilization, we can transfer the embryo into the woman’s body after 2 or 3 days or 4-6 days . The doctor decides after assessing the quality of the embryos.

During IVF, the whole process of eggs development is accelerated. That is why high levels of hCG can be detected earlier than with a natural conception, which means that you will get a positive pregnancy test earlier. Keep in mind that there is a small chance of a false positive result!

Fun fact: women at the time of the embryo transfer, in theory, instantly become 2 weeks pregnant!

How Do Home Pregnancy Tests Work

After an egg is fertilized, it travels through the fallopian tube for about three to four days on its way to the uterus. When the fertilized egg reaches the uterus, it implants into the lining of the uterine wall. After this implantation happens, the placenta begins producing hCG, and the hCG levels double every two to three days.

Home pregnancy tests determine if the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone was detected in your urine. If the test does detect hCG, it will read positive. But if the test doesnt find hCG in your urine, you will get a negative result.

High-quality home pregnancy tests can be up to 99% accurate if you follow the instructions precisely . To get the most accurate test result, follow these tips:

  • Wait until the first day of your missed period to take the pregnancy test. Early tests advertise the ability to detect a pregnancy as early as five days before your missed period, but you are more likely to get a false-negative test result.
  • Take the test first thing in the morning or after you havent had anything to drink in about six hours. If you are pregnant, but your urine is too diluted, your hCG levels could also be too diluted for the test to detect, resulting in a false-negative result.

If You Know Your Ovulation Date

A mature egg only has a window of about 12 to 24 hours after its release when it can be fertilized.

Once its fertilized, the eggs journey down the Fallopian tubes can take anywhere from 6 to 12 days, but 9 days is average.

So if you know your ovulation date, heres how youd calculate your implantation date:

There are two ways you can do the calculation if you know this. These methods are less accurate than knowing your ovulation date, but they may still predict implantation for you.

How Do Your Hcg Levels Change During Early Pregnancy

How to calculate age of fetus after positive pregnancy test? – Dr. Teena S Thomas

The levels of hCG rise rapidly in the earliest days of pregnancy and can be detected around eight days after the estimated day of conception in the blood by the most sensitive laboratory methods. Home pregnancy tests can detect it a few days later in urine depending on their sensitivity. HCG levels rise quickly and exponentially, usually doubling every 2 days in the first weeks before reaching a steady level around week 10 after which time they slowly decline.

Actual Length Of Pregnancy

The actual length of pregnancy varies significantly among women. Just 4% of babies are born on their estimated due date, while 70% are born within ten days. The remaining 30% are born more than ten days before the due date or more than ten days after.

The reference above provides a delivery birth range of 38 weeks and four days to 41 weeks and three days with a probability of 70%.

At-home pregnancy kits can be costly, and personal preferences around confirming and sharing a positive pregnancy test might influence your decision about when or if to take a test. Confirming a pregnancy early on may help you to navigate first trimester symptoms, get appropriate prenatal care, and start addressing any decisions or major lifestyle shifts that may come with a positive test result.

Whether you have been actively planning for pregnancy or unexpectedly find yourself experiencing some of the symptoms above, a pregnancy test is only useful if itâs used effectively. A pregnancy test calculator uses information about your menstrual cycle to predict if enough time has passed for the chemical changes of pregnancy to be picked up by an at-home urine test.

My Cycle Isnt 28 Days Will This Due Date Calculator Work For Me

Yes. The logic behind our pregnancy calculator works as follows:

  • The average cycle length is 28 days
  • If your cycle length is shorter, your due date will be earlier
  • For every day your cycle is shorter, your due date moves one day earlier
  • Similarly, if your cycle is longer, your due date will be later
  • For every day your cycle is longer, your due date moves one day later
  • Can Hcg Levels Diagnose A Miscarriage Or An Ectopic Pregnancy

How Soon Can I Take A Pregnancy Test Calculator?

Your hCG level can inform your doctor whether there is a risk of an ectopic pregnancy or whether a miscarriage has occurred. Declining or low rate of increase in hCG over 48 hours can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the hCG level may just plateau or increase at a very slow rate. If the hCG level continually declines, this points to a miscarriage having taken place or that the pregnancy may no longer continue. See your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.HCG is one of the most important hormones in early pregnancy. Its the reason the test turns positive. It continues to increase over the first trimester as your baby continues to grow and you may feel a little nauseous. Because hCG is usually only produced during pregnancy, if you see a positive result on a pregnancy test, you can be more than 99% certain you are .

    Early Pregnancy Test Accuracy

Pregnancy test manufacturers give accuracies based on a woman ovulating/conceiving 14 days before her expected period. Also assumed is that each woman taking a pregnancy test knows the date her expected menstrual period is due or the length of her menstrual cycle. Both these variables can he highly irregular and affect how soon hCG is detectable.

HCG starts being detectable in urine with its lowest accuracy at approximately 8 days after ovulation/conception. Accuracy is highest from 14 days after ovulation/conceptionwhich is commonly the day of the expected period for women with regular cycles.

What Time Of Day Should You Take A Pregnancy Test

Though you can take a pregnancy test at any time of day, they tend to be more accurate in the morning, according to a 2011 study published in the journal Clinica Chimica Acta. This is because at-home pregnancy tests detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin in your urine, and unless you make frequent trips to the bathroom throughout the night, your pee is likely most concentrated first thing in the morning, before you dilute it by drinking water or other fluids.

Can I Plan My Due Date

Whether you’re trying to avoid being very pregnant in the middle of summer or are a teacher who wants to maximize time off with your little one, you can try to time when you conceive in order to “plan” your due date. But even if you’re one of the lucky ones who’s able to get pregnant when she really wants to, just remember that you probably won’t be able to map out exactly when you’ll give birth to the day .

Still, you can try our Ovulation Calculator, which uses the date of your last menstrual period and your typical cycle length to discover the days you’re most likely to be fertile and increase your chances of conceiving.

How To Calculate How Many Weeks You Are

Home pregnancy tests and Pregnancy due date calculator
  • Start by counting the recurring day of your last menstrual period
  • Stop counting recurring days when you reach the present time.
  • The number of recurring days you count is the number of weeks you are now.
  • Example:count one week to the nextuntil you reach the present date.

    LMP = December 2, 2021

    1st Wed = December 9, 2021 = 1 Week2nd Wed = December 16, 2021 = 2 Weeks9th Wed = February 3, 2022 = 9 WeeksYou are 9 Weeks and 1 Day pregnant

Another method to calculate how many weeks pregnant you are is to:

  • Count the days from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period until you reach today’s date.
  • Now divide the counted days by 7.
  • The answer will be how many weeks you are now.
  • How Many Weeks Am I Formula:LMP = Last Menstrual PeriodHow Far Along Am I Formula:LMP = Last Menstrual Period*LMP date may be adjusted if unknown or following ultrasound.

Each of these methods will give you the gestational age of your pregnancy.

What Is Gestational Age Can It Be Different Than What The Calculator Shows

Gestational age is the term used to describe how far along the pregnancy is and how long baby has been gestating .

If you get an ultrasound you may notice a GA on the image with a number of weeks and days. This figure is based on how the baby is measuring, not on your LMP, which the due date calculator uses.

Its normal for these dates to not match up perfectly. If there are significant differences in the dates, your doctor may want to dig deeper to determine conception date. As a result, your midwife or doctor may change your due date based on the ultrasound gestational age.

Early ultrasounds are very accurate when dating a pregnancy and can be helpful if you dont know your LMP or your periods are irregular.

Note that you dont have to have an early ultrasound, especially if you are fairly certain of your cycle length and conception window. This study shows that early dating ultrasounds dont change the incidence of induction.

How Are The Weeks Of Pregnancy Calculated

The 40 weeks of pregnancy begin on the first day of your last menstrual period.

This can be a little confusing because, for most people, conception doesnt occur until day 14 of the menstrual cycle. So yes, you arent actually pregnant during those first two weeks of pregnancy.

Modern data suggests that women have their babies a few days after their due date on average. Studies like this one found that Naegeles rule consistently places the due date about 2-4 days too early. So a better estimate may be 40 weeks and 3 days from LMP.

Alternatively, you can use our Advanced Due Date Calculator, which uses the Mittendorf-Williams rule to calculate your due date, which has been shown to be more accurate.

You have several options for determining your conception date:

    • An ultrasound is the most accurate way to see how far along your pregnancy is. Ultrasounds provide a detailed look at your babys development and will give you a good estimate of how far along your pregnancy is.
    • An online pregnancy calculator can give an estimate of when you conceived based on when your last period was. This method is not as accurate as a confirmation ultrasound.

We offer free ultrasounds at our pregnancy center. Our medical professionals are trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound and provide medical services under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician.

How Do Twins And Multiples Affect Hcg Levels

Women pregnant with twins or multiples have high levels of hCG. This increased level of hCG could also be why some women who carry twins have severe morning sickness compared to women who are expecting only one baby. If you have a blood test to check your hCG levels and its higher than average, there is a chance that you are pregnant with more than one baby.

Why Pregnancy Is Counted From The Last Menstrual Period

Pregnancy is counted from a women’s last menstrual period because the start of a period is easily observable and usually known to a woman whereas the date of conception is much less likely to be known.

Historically, the first day of the last menstrual period became the date from which pregnancy is counted even though conception occurs about two weeks later.

The LMP formula is good for working out an initial age of pregnancy but ultrasound is more accurate. The age of pregnancy may be revised following your ultrasound scan.
